This is a good guide for hardware modding http://www.thespicers.net/microserver & there are several OS's that you can load on to it, to get the most out of your microserver.

    Flat out newb when it comes to these, but keep seeing them pop up and I store tons of vids on my current pcs around house. So couples of questions I guess;
    1. What OS is good for stay for say storage and torrenting
    2. Install OS on?
    3. Any need for extra ram?
    4. With graphics card this can be set-up with a TV, best way to control? remote, wireless mouse/keyboard? suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi! I don't see the 5$ discount of my order total when purchasing a Gigabyte AMD HD 6450 together with HP N40L and 3TB Segate HDD. The price is: 299 + 39 + 11.81 shipping = 349.81. I think it should be 349.81 - 5 = 344.81, shouldn't it?

  • Hi guys,
Have been reading lots of post about this micro server in this forum and so tempted to get (it seems cheaper than my current setup and neater) but still unsure whether it suits my needs some help would be great.
Currently I have a wd 1tb mybookworld (bought 2 yrs agi for $100) which has nas to act as a central storage and this is plug into my modem router so all comp in the house can gave access to files on it.obviously 1tb is not enough so I have a hp 2tb ($89) and wd 4tb external drive ($200) connected to the 1tb mybookworld via a usb hub to extend the nas storage from 1tb to 7tb. i also have a wd live streaming media player connected to my tv to for video playback from nas and the play is not very smooth.
So if I am to get this micro server:
    1. Is it easy to setup (hardware and software)? I am no comp expert hence my current nas system is messy.
    2. Can replace my current messy nas system?
    3. I still can watch movies (smoothly) on my tv from the hdd storage attached to the microserver (it will be sitting in my study room)?
    Many thanks in advance :)

Check out FreeNAS for a simple & free NAS OS. There are tutorials & reviews on Youtube about it running on the N40L or N36L… http://www.freenas.org/about-freenas/features.html Also, those newbies with external drives on hand, allot of them are 3.5" HDD in an enclosure (others 2.5" of course) & can be removed from the housing & slotted in to the bays. I would research your external HDD models before attempting this. And, always back them up as you may have to set them up from scratch without any data on them… Youtube is good for HOWTO's. Also, a wiki here for compatible hardwares http://n40l.wikia.com/wiki/HP_MicroServer_N40L_Wiki

    • simiot, Many thanks for the info and links

  • Having a slight issue with the discounts for this deal.

Issue 1. is that when I add the 3TB Seagate drive (Still unsure how reliable they are from some of the comments in this thread compared to the WD Green Drives)an additional $1.96 is added to my total shipping cost ($9.85 vs. $11.81).

My interpretation of the deal is when you bundle with one of the listed items (this HDD being one of them) no extra shipping cost is added.

This links into my second issue where you are suppose to get an extra $5 Off the bundled item, that I do not seem to be receiving.

I will open up a ticket but in the interest of this deal ending I will still purchase Items on good faith to the rep.

Note. My interpretation could be wrong so this may be more of a question than a statement as I am seeking clarity?

    • Hi yacman,

If you could PM me your order ID so i can advise you the next step.

      Kind Regards

  • Any help or pointers on how to install the 6450 graphics card!

    • +1

when I got my one (with a graphics card that ended up not fitting as the models got mixed up), the closest I got was from having the motherboard tray fully in, and then feed the graphics card in from the front, with its pins in between the pci slots. then once most of the way back, lift parallel, from front and back (fingers in through the back plate area) and move it over to the left to the big pci slot.

    • Just YouTube adding pci card to N40L. That's what I did and it wasn't hard at all. Just make sure you swap over bracket to low profile.

Received my bundle yesterday and couldn't be happier. I had been considering buying for a long time but this deal tipped the balance.
