Not bad if you have a ancient Pentium Celeron or Athlon that you can't really sell on feebay… but…

Laptop has to be posted using prepaid postage label

    shipping won't be cheap!

Lol - it's prepaid by the people running the scheme!

    • up to 5 years old.. so not too ancient

  • Laptop must be up to 5 years old, >= 13" screen and fully operational.

So if the requirements are not met I suppose you could get denied the cashback. Will there be arguments like they say it's 5.2 years old because it was released earlier outside Australia, but you bought it 4.8 years ago? And is some HN flunky going to check out that everything works? What if they say the wireless switch is dodgy or something like that? Too many holes for my liking. I must not be professional.

i doubt they'll be too strenuous with the requirements, the amount off won't cover their inflated prices so i'm sure it's just a ruse to lure you through the door

  • I think we will be seeing a lot of cheap chinese laptops being offered up for trade-in.

    e.g.
    http://www.tinydeal.com/133-win-7-ultimate-os-notebook-14-la…

You can get these much cheaper on alibaba.

    D2500 released in Q3,2011

    Fully compliant.

    • Though probably a bit too late to buy that now for trade in, by the time it arrives, the promo wouldve ended! More likely more people buying secondhand laptops from gumtree me thinks.

      • interesting

i'd rather buy that chinese laptop and use it than have to deal with harvey norman

looks like a good unit for $206!

HN making it hard for pros to grab a bargain

  • My AMD HP has to be stick around for a bit longer.

HN is ripped off even after trade in. Better keep your notebook and sell it online.

Just tried to do a quick price comparison on Staticice/shopbot/getprice - the cheaper acer ones are not common, and they seem to be cheapest at Harvey Norman so if you're planning to buy them anyway, not a bad price.

Going up to the Toshiba u940/01k which would get you a $150 discount being an i3, brings the price down to $644. It's $639 at wireless1 - which doesn't even need a trade-in.

So heads up guys - if one of the laptops on the list is one that you actually want, do a quick price comparison first because you might actually be able to get it cheaper without any trade-in at all.

    • This is a fair call. Thanks for the heads up - this is often the case with these kinds of "deals". You do get Office home and student with some/most of the HN packages so if you need that it may be worth it.

  • Got excited till I read the part about being up to 5 yrs old. I have an Apple Ibook Clamshell from 1999 which I thought could earn me $300. Looks like it stays for now.

Just so you know, these schemes are funded entirely by selling the pornography found on all the old traded in computers !

    • Once they see my 5" 'laptop' there is a good chance that they'll give me a bigger discount out of sympathy.

    • +2

If that was the case then my computer's worth WAY more than $300.

  • how would they know how old the laptop is? is it 5 years from release, manufacture or purchase? there is a big difference between those

    • They could just google the model and find out how old that lineup is.

      • As mentioned above this makes most of their prices barely competitive - I don't think they'll be too picky

Better off selling on Ebay imo

  • 5 years from the first purchase date as stated in their fine print

  • i did a double take when i read the Ultrabook part, that's laptops under 2 years old, i mean, the cheapest new i3 ultrabook you can buy without rebate/cashback is around $550(right now Myer has the Acer S3 $795->$556) and they will give you $150?! hey Mr harvey we professionals will get a lot more for our ultrabooks by selling online so thanks, but no thanks!

    • … read the deal properly. You trade in your 5 years> laptop for a discount on a new ultrabook.

      • yeah my bad on the first part of the ultrabook wording, but the crummy deal still stands!

        • Well, this deal has actually been running for a long time now, there was some nice deals if combined with this offer, an i5 Acer S3 was $587, trading a laptop in would have taken it down to $337. The also had a 20% off HP Ultrabooks running simultaneous with this deal a few weeks back. But agreed, if alone this deal is crummy.

  • its Hardly Normal after all

  • my T41 still works, sadly it doesn't fit the 5 year limit. damn.

on the other hand… hardly you can find a laptop that is as hardy as a thinkpad T series nowadays….. well, maybe except another T series. :P

    • my T43 works just fine after 7yrs. Original T series produced by IBM is a classic.
