  • Quick question

    • Apart from the warranty whats the difference between non-pro and pro series ?
    • +4

The Pro uses MLC flash (2 bits per cell) and the non-pro uses TLC (3 bits per cell). TLC is cheaper per bit than MLC to make, but is slower to write, takes more power to write, and has lower write endurance (how many times you can rewrite a particular area of flash). Manufacturers have more spare flash on TLC units to make up for the low write endurance (ISTR 3000 program cycles as a typical TLC endurance figure), and the flash controller plays all sorts of games to hide/ameliorate the slow writes and low endurance, but there are limits to the trickery.

TL;DR: TLC is fine if you just want to have a quick loading OS and apps, but if you want to run any kind of write-heavy workload like databases or big file crunching (audio/video editing for instance) then MLC will probably suit you better, and the longer warranty on the Pro largely reflects the greater write endurance of the MLC flash.

[also, a tip based on many slow computers I have met: If possible, make sure you have enough RAM that your machine doesn't need to swap in normal operation. That will save your SSD's precious write cycles for your files, instead of constantly thrashing your programs and their data between RAM and the swap file…]
