      @nosdan
      Agreed with you.
First time poster but workharder than some senior posters (i posted the deal ,you find the stock yourself…hahaha) here.
Thanks OP and welcome to Ozbargain. Have a nice day

        No prob, thank you both.

    • Ditto nosdan's comment. Very thorough, great stuff.

  • they sound great with 5.1 after calibration. Couldn't fault them at all.

Beware ARC isn't working with LG tv, also no audio pass through. Item is bulky, and cant adjust auto on off subwoofer thus making clicks sounds.

    • Hi with my LG TV you have to enable ARC to be on. Go through menu settings and to sound then there should be selections for tv speakers on/off and ARC on/off.

As OP above noted these systems have no adjustment on subwoofer so it does click on and off when movie or TV hits a quiet spot.

      • I've noticed erwinsie's posts here and Whirlpool about ARC failing on restart with LG TV's, just checking if you have this model with a LG TV successfully keeping ARC connectivity after a reset? I'm cautious to pull the trigger with this issue since I use iView and Youtube on the TV a fair bit (which I presume is the main use for ARC).

      • yes i spent days or weeks on this initially.
i know where the arc setting is, but when i let it on, the sound will not go thru my receiver anymore. i need to recalibrate my Pio.

at the end i use optical cable to connect tv to receiver.

        my tv lg 55lw6500

@holy: so you also have no idea how to fix that clicks sound? i checked net tried few options (adjust volume or output) but no result.

        • Hi I have the LG 42lw5700 - an earlier led lcd 3d smart tv which I have found to be a terrific tv - added an Ethernet cable to connect to router access point.

I have the pioneer vsx-s300 purchased from DSE earlier around xmas this year as a home theatre set for cheap $ (can not remember now) but chased it as receiver fits in my TV cabinet perfectly for height.

I have not been able to rectify the clicking with the powered subwoofer. I do not use the optical connection and have not had any trouble the ARC holding with the receiver. On the LG TV HDMI1 is the ARC connectivity port(which I am sure you are aware of - Is the HDMI cable rated for ARC compatibility) .

Sorry that can not be more helpfully

        • You bought for $199 I missed that so took the pio 522 deal ($275)few weeks after. Regretted due to bulkky design and arc issues and clicking sound. I'm willing to swap with yours :)

If any one is intrested in the VSX-522 they are selling them at the Harvey Norman seconds store in Dandenong for $199. (right behind the Harvey Norman store) They also have the VSX-522K (with ipod compatibility) for $199 and the Vsx-527 (Airplay) for $227, plenty stock of all

Of course there factory seconds but all come with 1 year warranty. Just bought a 522K no problems at all.

So far as I understand, the System Menu won't show up through HDMI. You need to connect the composite cables to access the System Menu - personally lost interest in these units because of that.

But big plus for the work OP!

      Thanks mate :D

    • -1

      confirmed above.
yes you need separate cable aux maybe forget the name but its yellow red white thingie, to see the menu thru tv, otherwise you still can do calibration via lcd on the receiver - not so easy but possible

Sounds like a piece of junk.

  • When I got my Sony 5.1 satellite speaker system in 2001 it was $800 and that didn't even include a receiver :o

      When I got my Sony…

There's your mistake right there…Sony makes users pay through the nose for everything. ;)

I got one of these, around half year earlier, for $319 at jb hifi. The sound quality for movie is great, definitely better than in-built speakers from TV, especially for 5.1 sound. However, the same thing does not apply for music though, mainly due to the speakers.

The build quality of the amp is very strong, with the feel of metal and not plastic. It does support iPod well, although not AirPlay. Hdmi support is of the latest, though for some reasons as pointed out before, not be able to output menu display through HDMI and not be able to upscale to HDMI, but you cannot complain at this price. Althoug the amp itself, from my reading, is of the lowest model in the pioneer range, the quality from sound output should not be different from the top models due to the same component being used.

The speaker, on the other hand, feel plastically cheap and is the reason for "not very good" music quality. It is loud and clear, which is still better than TV and laptop in built speakers but to say it will amaze you with a super clear and crispy sound at all levels would be impossible. As I said, though, it is still amazing for movie.

Setting up is easy, wires are long enough to get to the end of an average size living room. It worths your $300 but if you have spare cash, you should either spend more for a different speakers or more for a more functional amp

  • woa $300, it must be very good gig?

  • May be a stupid question but would they do a layby for 2 or 3 weeks on an item like this?

  • I've missed out on too many similar deals, so pulled trigger first, and thought later. If anyone in Adelaide would like one of these, I did a click and collect for Adelaide CBD store (yet to receive confirmation - won't come until tomorrow), and I'm only 50/50 about getting it. If you're desperate, let me know via PM and you can have the one I theoretically have on hold (I'll tell you my name, and you can just say you're me when you go to pick it up :))

  • Noob question, but what would be a suitable set up to allow streaming music from a Macbook Pro and an Android phone. Or should I just get a bluetooth equipped receiver?

    • get a synology (or maybe qnap also can do, not sure i dont have qnap) NAS
they have itunes server for your macs, and free audio station for your android (and on ios and winphone) so you can stream all your musics inside your NAS to your tv and let it pass the sound to receiver.

edit: provided your tv is smart tv with network slot, if not.. get apple tv to stream mac to it, and apple tv will play songs thru receiver

    • Add this BT receiver to your amp
      http://dicksmith.com.au/product/A2180/

      • I tried one of those, and a Pioneer BT-100 with my 520…honestly, I thought the sound over BT was pretty damn ordinary, especially once you leave line of sight.

Conversely, I plugged in my old Belkin Tunecast & tuned in a FM station on the amp, et voila, the sound was as good, if not better, for like ten bucks or something! ;)

        • +1

agreed. I have the belkin bluetooth thinger. the audio quality is terrible. sounds washy/watery, like you're pouring your sound from your phone down a drain hole to get to the amp. even when standing just a metre from the dongle. yet same phone connected to a cheap bluetooth-to-ipod adapter on a logitech ipod audio dock sounds great.

  • Bought the last boxed set at Claremont.

Hooked it all up, currently Symlinked with TV and ARC enabled without much fuss (not sure if it will last the resets).

Question for the panel- my rear speakers aren't working. Any suggestions?

    • Oh and I should add, they price dropped to $275 if I took a $20 extended warranty without asking, I'm sure there is some room to move on the price.

  • Ok, noob question here, but if I feed this component or composite video in, will that be displayed by the HDMI out (eg. composite in -> hdmi out)? or will it only "come out" of the corresponding output (ie. composite in -> composite out)?
