Great price even you cannot get the AMP itself at that price.

is this much better than Pioneer VSX-S300 AV Reciever with Satellite Speaker? (mind you this is $75 more)
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/81307

    • +2

Fairly similar in terms of specs, it has more composite inputs but fewer optical inputs. Only real advantage is iPod support, while the S300 only has 3.5mm input

      • The other advantage the S300 has is size! if your missus complains about your gear around the house, the pioneer slims and marantz slims are the only ones that have a chance! Standard AVR's are HUGE!

        • +4

My missus rarely complains about my huge gear! :p

        • +1

wish i could say the same :(

        • -1

That's alright, it's not the size of your AVR, it's how you use it! ;)

        • this true. i wish i got the S300 deal but now i hope i will use the iphone features on s522 more (and also hoping bigger build means bigger quality)

        • -1

"Stewballs" your missus obviously isn't too concerned about the overall state of your tackle either :p

        • -1

I'm not sure if that's meant to be a joke or what…

          Comedy 101 "Matt88" - good gags don't need an explanation! ;)

      • Are the speakers much different?

  • +1

I was tempted to get this and sell my $166 VSX-521 that I got a few months ago…

    but I read this:

    http://www.avsforum.com/t/1392589/pioneer-receivers-2012-vsx…

You win some, you lose some. Probably won't affect many people. Unless you're like my Mother in law who wants 50 million devices connected up to her amp via RCA…

    • i dont understand the link :(

      • +1

Basically, the 522 is poorer specced then last years 521 it's replacing. They're moving to all digital connections, so if you have a lot of component/composite devices this isn't for you

        • +4

*if you have a lot of component/composite devices (or live with your mother in law) then this isn't for you

        • haha, except I don't live with my MIL…I just have to do all her IT/AV work…LOL

    • hmm Aussie Pioneer page says it still has analog component inputs still yet avs forum says all analog connections were removed

Main Unit Terminals 4 x HDMI In
      • 4 x Composite In
      • 2 x Component In
      • 1 x Coaxial In
      • 2 x Digital Optical In
      • 1 x HDMI Out
      • 1 x Composite Out
      • 1 x Component Out

      so which is it?

noob question does this amp do the PS3 and Wii U Six-channel PCM linear output through HDMI ?

  • +1

I've been umm and erring about getting one of thease since they started dropping in price earlier in the year. The biggest criticism I've heard about them is the on-screen menu can't be viewed through a HDMI connection, and there is no stand-by audio passthrough.

Has anybody had any experience with either the VSX-522 receiver, is the menu/passthrough issue a hinderence at all?

Can anybody speak as to the power/quality of the speakers? Are the speakers low-end enough that they "crackle"?

    • the pioneer site says :

HDMI Standby Through Yes with Input Switch / Last Memory

does that mean passive pass through??

        Second last post:

"Spoke with Pioneer this morning, Sam was really helpful but was unaware that they actually were posting incorrect info on their website
None of their previous models sub the new 827 do HDMI passthough in standby
This is what he did confirm and was apologetic"

        • +1

well based on the pioneer website - if you took it home and it didnt do that then you could rightly return it for a refund i would assume…

    • "on-screen menu can't be viewed through a HDMI connection, and there is no stand-by audio passthrough."
what the real usage problems with those 2 issues?

      • +1

When setting up the MCACC it's quite handy being able to navigate through a GUI on your TV rather than using the small screen on the receiver. It's just more convenient, but you can still do the same setup without it.

        • +1

There is a gui, but you just can't use HDMI, you have to connect up a composite cable.

        • OK, cool. Good to know.

  • funny they sell just the receiver for $497

  • Hmm, tempted by this. I have a Pioneer VSX-1018 which was higher end model but it's now 4 years old… I wonder how this would compare? Having more HDMI inputs would certainly be handy and I could probably get a fair chunck of money back selling my old receiver and the speakers…

  • Does it support 3D ?

  • +1

I purchased the VSx-s300 and speakers the other month ir so from DSE for $200.
MCACC setup was viewed on TV using the analogue output from receiver to TV screen.

The pack came with a powered subwoofer which sometimes clicks on and off as it is in powersave mode and from my look at web this can not be changed. Good for music but does disturb TV/movies when it transitions from action to no action scenes. Option is to turn off subwoofer and put more bass into other speakers.

Overall the sound is a mile above the standard TV

    • ugh that would sound horrible, the tiny satellites can't cater to the low frequencies covered by the subwoofer. Is there no other way?

  • Waiting for specials on 7.1 or 7.2 receivers. Once you've gone 7.2, you'll never go back! (unless you have a small room)

      What's with the random negging?

      • It happens around here quite frequently; usually when some chump doesn't like what you've got to say, but doesn't have the smarts to put forward a cogent counter-argument. :p

I'll chuck you guys a couple of charity positives… ;)

Did i miss something over dinner?

        • +2

Doesn't matter, as long as you didn't miss dinner! ^^Q.E.D though! ;)

    • http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V671-7-1-Channel-Network-Rec… need a freight forwarder such as shipito

  • Got one, hope it's good value!

  • When will the excellent wireless speakers go on sale?

  • +1

    got it.
Now to hock my ridiculously large 4 year old Sony Muteki system.

    • I am just going to replace sony Muteki system too. Sony Muteki doest support audio through hdmi and this one does !!

      • mine does, I don't know of any receiver with hdmi that does't support audio over hdmi.. unless you mean audio in the opposite direction, forget what it's called.

        • ARC - audio return channel…

  • Would this be enough or overkill for a 5m X 5m bedroom?

  • Pioneer VSX-321 also sale in JB $240.80 (including speaker)
    http://www.jbhifionline.com.au/home%20theatre/home%20theatre…

    • looking for the model number i think 522 is much better but yes $35 cheaper if you are tight.
not sure about the speaker set, looks different from picture

  • Dunno about the speakers, but will recommend the 521/522 amps, I have a 521 for my pc setup, bought the 522 for my bro and the 821 for my tv setup, all of them excellent value, features and also power to drive the speakers.

There's hardly any better value for this kind of price.

LoL, I knew JB sales were NEVER the cheapest prices.

  • Hi,
Does anyone know the dimensions of this product. I cant find them anywhere.
    thanks

    • +1
       Dimensions (W x H x D) 435 x 168 x 342.5mm mm

      Weight 8.9 kg

      • thanks for that

  • as DSE are cheaper now will JBHIFI match them?

  • Just looking at the Dick Smith site they have a Yamaha Home Theatre package which includes the RX473 receiver for $499. About $150 cheaper than JB's price and has a lot of the features like Standby Passthrough and DLNA etc.

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/C10005/yamaha-5-1-home-theat…

    • Wow JB really jacked up the price on that… it was $488 less 30% last week (I tried to price match one of these at DSE but it was to no avail (wrote about it here).

      • Geez, that's just a tad sneaky. Also after checking out the picture on the Yamaha Australia website it appears it isn't the RX473 included in that package.

  • Just ordered one.. should be a nice upgrade from the old pioneer from about 10 years ago lol

  • picked this up few hours ago, now unboxing and setting them up.

  • Picked one up a few hours ago from DSE. Replaced a Panasonic HTIB.

Still using the Pans fronts and centres but have noticed a massive improvement in clarity already.

Amp is obviously lower end spec, but has room for speaker improvements

  • hey guys im looking at purchasing this today. is this best value for my situation? i dont really have a situable location for the rear speakers to go so probably only 2.1 for now. best to purchase this or should i get a amp and 2.1 speakers seperately? any replies would be greatly appreciated quickly as looks like this deal is ending today at dse. cheers!

    • I bought this yesterday and the guy said you couldn't even buy the amp alone for this price. I didnt check but if this is the case- wy not just get the bundle?

  • went into my local jbhifi, still had $500+ marked on shelf for it. told him i wanted two at the net price. No dramas and wow what can i say. Me and mate coudnt be happier. The sound and clarity for the price is great. Best 270 i have spent in a long time.

    • Good stuff. I bought the last one at burwood nsw yesterday afternoon and didnt get around to setting it up yet. Hopefully tonight.

Anyone have ideas on good ways to mount the rear speakers?

      • On the wall using 2M hook, or speaker stands maybe?

  • Got it setup with LG tv. need to run MACC 3x maybe room too small or noisy. ARC works. This is my first receiver so still not get used to with extra remote and changing inputs etc.

  • guys, need help from people with this setup and LG tv.
last night ARC works but today when i arrive home, the sound came out from speaker tv not the pioneer.
went to simplink menu but all greyed out.
    help please?

  • Damn missed out, any chance this deal will come up again?
