  You forgot the "from".

  Its also funny that MEL-LAX is cheaper than SYD-LAX. United doesn't fly direct from MEL-LAX, its actually a MEL-SYD-LAX flight. Wonder if you can buy a MEL-LAX and just hop on at SYD.

    This is generally not possible. If you don't show up at MEL the entire ticket will be cancelled as a no-show, and if you attempt to change the ticket's origin to SYD beforehand it will be repriced as a SYD-LAX fare.

    It might be cheaper to book a cheap return flight to somewhere in Asia first and book your flight to/from the US from there.

      Jetstar PER->SIN (return) with 40kg luggage, choice of seats, food, blankets etc: $700

    I was going to suggest you try China Southern, but their website was a bit flaky. So did I quick look at Webjet for flights in August to LAX from PER, and it shows Virgin return for $1368 and Qantas (on Sale) $1622. Which isn't too bad considering…
