Oh god. I can imagine 100 people camping MSY at 10:00 or 10:30 when they open.

    • +18

If they all want the hard disk and nothing else, then perhaps it mightn't be so bad. Would rather be behind 30 of those people than 10 of your typical MSY customers who spend ages tying up the guys at the counter with questions they should've reasearched online, waiting for staff to retreive items, trying to figure out what to get when their preferred items aren't in stock, etc.

      • +1

Sorry to disagree but come on, they are an australian shop front NOT an online only store/pick up venue. Even the guys at CPL help you out or at the very least have a conversation with you.

MSY employees -_- "oh god just shutup and buy something or get out of my life"

        • i thought that the pascoe vale store in vic have pretty good stuff!

          quite nice and friendly.
          helps the noobs as well!

        • And that's what I like about MSY. Cut the crap and straight to the point. Sometimes they'll warn you about compatibility like you're someone who has no idea what you have just bought…

        • I've found the staff at the North Melbourne store to be better than those at the Pascoe Vale store. I always find it really hard to get a refund or replacement at the Pascoe Vale store, even when I can prove that the item I bought is faulty. I've never had problems with replacements/refunds at the North Melbourne store.

      • The problem is they don't have a lot of car parking at their stores.

    • +3

those 100 people will be very disapointed when they find out MSY dont have suffient stock

      • +7

At least they'll know what they want, as opposed to the gormless sheeple that usually hold me up at MSY.

        • +11

I have long said that MSY need 2 queues -

          1. I KNOW what the frak I want
          2. I DON'T KNOW what the frak I want.

That way, the lazy non-researchers are the only ones who get punished with a slow moving queue.

Having said that, everyone is doing less business right now and are trying to improve service for the customers who do come in-store. Even CPL have improved their 'classic 20 minute wait' for the warehouse-monkey to get your hard drive ready (while you try not to pace the store)…it's down to 5 minutes lately.

        • +2

That still won't work because there will always be people who THINK THEY KNOW but in fact THEY DON'T. or they believe they know but in fact don't

        • My local MSY stores in SA have express lanes for orders made over the internet. Works brilliantly! My items are ready to go.

On the other hand PCDIY are terrible in this regard. Even with confirmations, stock is not set aside and they fart arse around.

      • At lease the queue will be gone in a few seconds.

  • +3

Exactly, how many do they really have in stock? The last advertised laptop special I wanted to buy ended up just being 1 in stock and it was a display model!!! So I caught the bait, went into store and bought a more expensive one….
Don`t get me wrong. I like MSY but if they advertise specials then they need to back this up with appropriate qty.

  • Why camp out when you can order it online for local store pickup? Am I missing something here?

    • Its not adding to the cart. Any luck?

      • Yep, I was able to add it to my cart… but of course it's not for the sale price, as the sale doesn't start until 15/05, so there's no way I'm checking out now - lol

    • It's the better option. You still have to queue up to collect and pay your items tho

      • Do you have to collect on the same day? can you buy online nad wait until the big queue finishes and then go, pay and collect?

  • I keep looping when trying to add my local store after clicking on the deal, is the deal not live yet online?

    • +2

      title says 15th May

      • Thanks, [Rolls eyes at self] Sorry, was so excited to add a 750gb HDD to my family of portable storage.

  • +1

The sale has not even started yet, and it is already out of stock on the website for QLD.

    • it has worked already, people who dont read the date has already purchased it at a higher price :P

    • Good thing I know mates who work at MSY, just got two of them (QLD)

      • -2

well.. this means you need to have mates working there to get the deal. It's not a deal then. :D

  • +2

I guess I'll know where to pitch the tent tonight :)
    loljks, I live in Adelaide.

I remember when they had the ASUS 640gb external for $40. Adelaide CBD had a whole stack of stock and there wasn't even a long queue.

Either way, I'm going to take OP's advice and bring a bucket of salt. If they dont have it, I'll just toss the salt at them :)

    • +5

Is there any deal for SALT in ozbargain?? In case if I need to buy a bucket of them.

      • +5

        Any deals on buckets?

        • Update: because ericeric and jasonlah said they got theirs already, I phoned up Adelaide CBD.
They've started and they have a lot of stock :)

Dont need the salt/bucket deals afterall

        • You can still use the salt at Dick Smith

  • surveying just outside of Ultimo store, saw half dozen waiting, walks in when it opens and walk out empty handed a min later, lol

  • if i order and select pickup, will they hold it for sure, they won't sell it right?

    • When I go to my local store (Cannington, WA) after ordering online and I tell them I'm picking up my order they have to go and find all the parts for my order on the shelves, so they are not pre-preparing online orders.
When you choose pick-up you have to pay in store.

  • Could this be cracked open and used as a PS3 or laptop drive?

    • No… the USB is welded to the circuit borad of the HDD permanently. There is no other use for this HDD BUT as portable passport!

    • Nope, I believe all newer passports have a USB connector attached to the physical drive.

  • It is a tactic that they use to lure people in and hoping you will grab a more expensive version. I'm not going to be a sucker for it!

  • +1

Just now, I bought this ext drive with price $46. Still waiting for their email confirmation for pick up though.

  • Seems to go through the whole process before the pickup ready email for me…
    http://imgur.com/k0K7oQH

    • And just got the email for pickup.

  • Does anyone know if you can take the HDD out and put it in a laptop or more specifically a PS3?
I have heard some of the passport models they have made it difficult

    • I have the 1tb of this model and usb is soldered onto the main board no chance to usin inside a console\pc

      • bummer ruins that idea…..

    • +1

Getting off topic but since you went that way…
MSY been in Malvern, Vic for over 20 years. Still have a case with their logo on it from around early-mid 1990's
Everyone bags them out but if they weren't around, Officeworks, Hardly Normal etc wouldn't be kept honest eh?

      • True. They really used to be the cheapest around 5 years ago. It is from msy's competition that we get cheaper prices from retailers

  • In store says sales for 14/5 and 15/5 two days, anyway pick up one in Adelaide city store

  • No more MSY at Indooroopilly (brisbane)??!

  • adelaide cbd has a stack of them right now, just picked one up

    • But at what price?

And did you threaten them with a bucket of salt?

      • $46, and no salt lol

        • msy staff are now slugs?

  • Already start selling with discounted rates.

  • I just ordered 2 online for $46 Each

  • -5

Thanx op- just grabbed 10 from Modbury for $460 total (honestly needed them, NOT 4 re-sale). There are still 30 left on sale at $46. Thanx again op :)

  • You needed 10?

    Thanks for being honest.

    • -1

4 for me, the rest for fam and friends- No surprise that all 6 have been claimed :D

  • does it come with a usb 3 cable ?

    • +3

yep, it comes with a standard USB 3.0 cable (~40cm).

  • -1

Damn… I work across the road from msy… not working tomorrow!

  • I ordered 2 online from my shop that said stock. Then I received an email saying they are out of stock.

  • Thanks OP! Just grabbed one from the Slacks Creek store - they had plenty of stock.

  • Just picked up 3 from the North Melbourne store. The store rep said that they have 200 in stock. No queues either. thanks OP. Nth Melbourne store is open until 6.30 pm tonight if anybody wants to pick it up.

    • I picked 1 up from North Melb store at 6pm today.

  • Had stock several hours ago at Balcatta and ordered but never received the email. Now shows no stock :( Oh well, maybe I didn't really need it.

    • Update: received email for collection from Balcatta. Seems I now need to find a use for this…

  • Are you guys buying it online or in store? thought it was not available till tomorrow??

  • Thanks OP - purchased a couple at North Melbourne :-)

  • +2

You want to hear something hilarious?

I was at my local MSY in Perth today (totally unaware of this deal) and the rep brought it up and asked if I was interested; then before I could respond he added "There's no stock currently available, but we can back-order it."

Ahhh MSY. No stock of a particular item THE DAY BEFORE A SALE ON THAT SAID ITEM. That is just classic, textbook MSY marketing 101.

    • Balcatta or Cannington?

I wonder if they were expecting a shipment to arrive in Perth, in time for the deal tomorrow.

      • This was Balcatta.

        • Just ordered one from Balcatta store.

  • +1

Picked up one at Slacks Creek, the guy said they had more than 10…

  • Went to Ultimo last night, got 2
asked the guy how many he had, he said "we got thousands for this deal"
    that could be national :)

  • Yeah, went to South Hurstville they also confirmed they have tons of these drives

  • Plenty stock in msy mitcham, some people bought 7-10, but at least one for each customer.

  • Thanks OP, just picked up one at MSY clayton, seems to be heaps in stock there. All five people in front of me bought the same thing lol

  • Just bought 2 from Mitcham store the guy told me it has over 40 in stock and selling fast.

  • plenty of stock at ultimo

    • Went at 4:20pm, all sold out.

  • Picked up two at Fyshwick. Had lots of stock left

  • My confirmation email just arrived (as I ordered online for local pickup) and it says that, "All orders need to be picked up within 48 hours of issue date, Excludes promotions; when promo ends so too dose the order.". So I guess that means I've got to get to my local store before COB today… better skip lunch then! :-D

  • Grabbed one in Ultimo 30 min ago, a long queue there. It is selling like hot cakes, from my observation it averages to be at least 1 per customer. Still in stock, better hurry!

  • just bought 2 from Auburn, they said a lots in stock. if i want more they can back order for me within this week, paid deposit first.

  • +1

Picked up one at Fyshwick and for a fun (checking my luck obiviously) went to the HN there's price for this drive is $169.99 I asked the guy at HN to price match with MSY, he told me the MSY is not a retail store its warehouse we cant price match, the best price he can do is for $91 and its is below cost, I told the guy, how about I will buy it from MSY and sell it to you for $50. :)

  • Ordered 2 from Mitcham for pick up. Will pick up on the way home from work.
    Good price!

  • just found that the front side of HDD has very sharp edge, not comfort as back side

    • That and the bundled cable is so bloody short it can't even span the distance between the USB 3.0 slot on top-rear of my tower and my desk. Have to have it sitting on the tower itself.

Thankfully though the bundled crapware just requires a reformat and it's all gone; unlike previous portable WD's I've had.

  • got one thanks.

don't think there's much stock left at ultimo

  • I was just at Plympton SA, they still have 7 left sitting on the counter. :)

  • Picked up two from MSY Balcatta (Perth). Simply reserved over the phone before hand.

It seems this is definitely not MSY's usual bait-and-switch type of sale; they actually do have plenty of stock on hand.

  • Bought 2, curious as to why they have so much stock?

  • Thanks OP - Picked up 3 at Brendale - Brisbane

  • I just got home from the north melbourne one, i got me 6 for me and some relo's. They still had more they said so you got about an hour left!

Good job everyone that got one.

  • I read my email from MSY telling me that I got 9 minutes to get there (by 6pm) as otherwise they cancel the order… 25km drive in 9 minutes.. unlikely! What ever happended to a 24 hour hold on items?

    • Price would be more expensive tomorrow, where did your logic fail on that one.

      • I sent MSY a quick email and they reserved it for me for another 24hrs. So I got 2 for the $46 price tag each. Quite logical to me to hold for 24 hours and not give people a short time between notification and pick up deadline. +ive to MSY and +ive to OP for the deal!
