  • I have to click a link! Why can't you summarise it for lazy people like me (sigh)

      Lazy bum, Done! :)

      • sankyou :)

        • +2

Wow. You are so lazy you abbreviated Th to S.

Exemplary write-up here. Read and learn :)

  • Anyone have any suggestions for a good sleeping mat so you can sleep on your side?

    • Get the thickest one you can possibly carry. I don't hike, I camp and I use a 10cm thick one.

      • Yeah but should I get a 4WD Mat?

        Something like this?

        http://www.kathmandu.com.au/camping/sleeping/self-inflating-…

So many options, not sure which ones will allow me to sleep on my side.

        • I find self inflating mats really thin and uncomfortable, unless you stack two on top of eachother. Why not just get an air mattress?

        • Thats unfortunate, I'll probably feel the same then.

Unfortunately air mattresses are quite big, its a shared tent so I wouldn't want to take up too much room.

        • Air matresses don't give as good thermal insulation either.

    • are you bushwalking or car camping? are you a cold or warm sleeper?

      • car camping, and I think warm sleeper?

        • well the one you linked certainly seems heavy enough to suggest its quite thick, but its pretty narrow.

I would be looking at an acutal matress if at all possible, probably a folding one.

You would need to try and see what suits you best though, a bad nights sleep when you are camping makes for a crappy next day.

And if you do intend to use a mattress straight onto the tent floor, look at something in between to help with the condensation.

Do you have a foam manufacturer nearby - they often have bits and pieces that might suit - for a cheap option

    • I've got 4 of these and I think there very good. Easy to lay on your side in comfort.

I have a Airmat 7.5 LW for summer and a SynMat UL 7 LW for colder climates, I wouldnt bother with the Down mats unless your sleeping up in the snow! :)

      http://www.hiking.com.au/s/Keyword/exped%20mat/SearchType/2/…

mind you these are hiking mats, not sure what your after…

      • +2

I have an exped DownMat 7 and a SynMat 7 - they are by far the most comfortable mats I've used (I'm a side sleeper).
I've also got a thermarest neo air - which is great if you want to shed some more weight.
The self inflating mats are usually too thin.

        • Exped DownMat 7 sleeper as well. They are the bees knees!

        • Love the Exped DownMat7, especially in the cold.
Used self inflating for years, but now I want a better nights sleep.
Waking sore & grumpy is no way to start a days hike.

    • It comes down to personal taste. I'm happy with a 3.5cm thick self inflating mattress, but it's too heavy to hike with. Others can't sleep with anything less than 10cm thick. And then there's the $8 kmart ones that are 1cm thick.

Also keep in mind that they don't all insulate the same. So in cold weather you might want something warm (as well as comfortable).

Anyway, I'd suggest anything between 5 and 10cm thick.

Wait till this goes 50% off (was last week), so it $110-$115. It goes on sale every so often. I did heaps of research on the self inflating mats, and at $110 its the best value.
      http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Camp-and-Hike/Sleep/Campe…

Its 10cm, and as its foam, insulates well (slept in 4 degrees, and was fine). For best result, I bought those jigsaw floor pieces, and pop three of them underneath my mat.

Travelling across simpson desert later this year, and all 3 of us ended up going with the denalis (they are an Anaconda brand). I'm 140kgs, and it was ok for me.

If you have money to burn, then consider the Blackwolf http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Camp-and-Hike/Sleep/Mats/… although interestingly the Denali had brass air valves vs plastic on the Blackwolf. Wild earth sells them cheaper (but no stock) http://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/black-wolf-mega-deluxe-luxur…

Don't touch the dune ones - the glue seperates from the foam and creates stupid airbubbles. Threw 2 queen size ones out that I got at the 4WD and Camping show last year.

      • Agree about the Dune 4wd mats, stay away from them.

      • That looks pretty good, if only I got it while It was on sale, hopefully it goes on sale soon.

Try them out first in the shop. 10cm mats sound like a good idea but I don't think they're any more comfortable than a 4-5cm mat (I'm not petite) and take up a ridiculous amount of space when packed.

Forget anything bigger than a single mat. They're worse than sharing a waterbed (you younguns may need to google that) and impractical to pack. 2 singles are much more versatile and some have velcro to join them if you think you need it.

Don't by the cheapest one you can find if you plan to use it for more than a couple of trips. An extra $100 isn't much over a few years if you're sleeping comfortably in the bush

  • awesome, going at lunchtime to nab the cycling stuff

  • Good stuff, need a new tent for Splendour. Anyone have any dealings with Spinifex tents? The Huon sounds great, half price at $200.

    • The Huon is good and large but not as easy to assemble as a Coleman instant up. I bought the Huon and after using it twice decided to get the Coleman. Never looked back. If you want the Huon then I will sell to you for $100 if you are in Melbourne.

  • Heading to USA in a months time i think i will wait and buy there…

  • I'm spending the fall and a little bit of winter in Alberta, Canada anything I desperately need to buy?

    • +1

some good cheap snow jackets on their site. Imo it would be cheaper to just buy them in Canada.

    • +1

If you do, buy it over there where you'll get better quality gear for cheaper.

    • Defiantly buy in Canada. What i did last time was go go into ski shops in sydney tried on the jackets that i liked and ordered it to be delivered to families place in USA at half the price of getting them here. So when i got there it was already delivered and ready to go.

  • These people USUALLY do not have any other than a display item or just one of whatever is advertised as on special in the catalog.

  • anyone have an idea how a hydration bladder like this would fare for this price?

    http://www.anaconda.com.au/Product/Bikes-and-Accessories/Bik…

theres cheapies on ebay but i worry about the valve tearing/bladder composition to drink from

    Quick search online.

    Or BCF:

    • .

    • No fishing gear is on sale. They had a good sale on rods, reels, lures and tackle a couple months ago - got a great deal on an Ugly Stik and picked up some Squidgy soft plastics for less than $5 a pack.

      • Turns out fishing gear is on sale 25%-off. Sorry, my bad, I didn't read it properly. But it's good to go in store and check for deals - there's often quite a bit of stuff cheaper than BCF and Tackleworld, just depends what you're looking for.

  • picked up the spit at $59.99 and apparently they have 10% off as well if you see it at a cheaper price.

  • Any good, cheap backpacks anyone can recommend?
