For one year? What happens after that? Do they remove all files that exceed it?
I would guess that you'll need to pay to gain access to your files again. I.e. Blackmail scenario
According to their billing page:
If you exceed your remaining storage space when the subscription expires, you'll be able to view, share, and download files on your SkyDrive, but you won't be able to upload files until you buy more storage or free up space.
Similar to what Dropbox does when their promo space expires.
Voucher valid for an extra 3 GB of free SkyDrive storage for one year.
Voucher must be redeemed by 12/31/13.
3 GB storage expires one year from voucher redemption.
Limit: one voucher per person.
Not redeemable for cash or gift cards.
Single use only.
This voucher is non-transferrable, and may only be redeemed by U.S. college students.
So I guess if you don't foresee using it yet, you can hold off redeeming the voucher until such time that you require the additional 3GB space, by 31 Dec 2013.

Skydrive was offering 25GB for life about a year ago as an introductory offer.
Works for student.unsw.edu.au
Appears as "Enthusiast bonus" rather than "Student bonus" on mine.
Works for @student.rmit.edu.au !
Woohoo, used an old student address to get the code but applied it to a Hotmail address I obtained separately later. :)
