    1792 x 768.

    Huh.

Good for watching films originally shot in 70mmm… horrible for everything else?

        • Good for working with two documents or spreadsheets side by side as well.

    • +1

It's one of those new fan-dangled ultra widescreens. Granted that's a new resolution for me :S

Certainly not a bad deal though.

    • +7

Thats a strange aspect ration -_-
but i up voted it anyway because its theearth's 700th deal and he put up an item priced 699.

You sir are a lv2 ozbargainer

    • +22

wow the dicksmith product photo looks so much more appealing, looking at OW photo is like that feel after you watch porn.

      • +3

That's because Officeworks used the wrong photo. They are using the photo of the U840, not the U840W.

        • Agreed, OW used the U840 lol I mean just look at it, wheres the 2 speakers on the side?

      • In all my years I've never seen anyone refer to that situation, ever. Props to you.

      • But not the feeling you get after you watch porn with your partner ;-)

        • +3

as like many people on the internet I am unfamiliar with that notion.

        • try lotion

+1 just for the achievement of 700 posts!

  • very decent value/spec if you don't want a macbook air…

  • +1

it's a nice machine, only downside being the keyboard a little tacky and awkward to use. widescreen is great for productivity and appropriately scaled HD movies.

bought with win7 when HN had their sale, 560 was a great deal, still waiting on the $250 trade in cash back!

    • +1

      'great for productivity'

Yeah I could see widescreen being useful for say two spreadsheets open side by side. Even so, it would take some getting used to and seems a niche laptop.

  • +2

it was on sale at HN a month ago for $551

    • Really? Damn I missed out, thinking of buying this tomorrow. Dont like Windows 8 though, hmmm

How come this isnt eligible for free delivery since it over $250?

      • you can install a thing called Classic Shell which enables you a Win 7 user experience.

    • u sure? $551? u sure it wasnt with a trade in laptop ?

      • Yes, I am 100% sure because I went to HN 2-3 times during the promo period. And that is before the trade in price. Although, it has a Win 7 instead of Win 8.

  • +8

Its a poorly designed ultrabook. I didn't sell a single one of these in a period of 4 months of launch. Reason - The widescreen !! Have a play in store first, don't just buy it. Its not for everyone, but I agree the price is too good. Also, The keyboard is shocking as it just comes out from the edges like a sticker.

  • Thank you for your dedication and endless service!

    700th post…. Wouah !!!
Thank you for all your great contributions :)

      Congrats also!! Thanks…
Bought a lot of stuff I never needed… but keep finding dem bargains :-)

  • LAN 10/100Mbps LAN. ?? No Gb

    • Damn, why so dated??
      http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/notebooks/toshiba/satel…
"It has only 10/100 Ethernet (a Realtek AR8152/8158 controller) rather than Gigabit, and it features only single-band 802.11n wireless networking (via a Realtek RTL8723AE chip) rather than dual-band Wi-Fi. These features aren't ideal for those of us who want to transfer lots of movies to the laptop over a local area network at the quickest possible rates — 10/100 transfers averaged 11 megabytes per second (MBps) in our tests, so transferring large files via a USB 2.0 drive (or 3.0 drive, ideally) will be faster."

  • if this has a touch screen, it would sold much better than it currently is

great conceptual system, form factor has a lot of potential

  • wow another infamous deal with dirty dick.. wonder if they'll actually honor it this time around

  • I love the idea of ultra widescreen, but this resolution is just pathetic.

    • It is a great idea

what it lacked is a touch screen, then a discreet graphics card
      then a higher PPI screen.

an Ultra book with all those at 1300 kicks mac book air arses

  • The screen design has been around for years(although the screen were a lower res)and its never took off. It just looks weird and you feel your getting something less compared to other "normal" screens.

  • Can there possibly be someone with a higher post-to-comment ratio (minimum, say, 50 posts)? You sir, are the salt of theearth.

    • +1

You sir, are the salt of theearth

We can't say the same about everyone on here. Some just take and take and never give back :p

Thanks for the enduring effort. I also bought this model with win 7 at the last H.N. sale. At this $699 price or less, this is a well speced ultrabook, exotic design with great build quality. Some features are 3 x usb3 ( one with sleep & charge ), good size/quality 14.4' HD widescreen, backlit keyboard with a nice solid build, finished in two tone brushed aluminium and grippe rubberised black strips. The keyboard is a bit stiff, although with well spaced keys, but does takes a bit of getting use to ( as with most new laptops ). Having only a 10/100 Lan is no real fail, as most ultrabooks forgo that option completely anyway. Putting a ssd in here would round off the specs and extend the already decent lengthy battery run time. This Toshiba ultrabook would suit people looking to have something different other than an apple computer. Cheers and enjoy.

haswell is out.. wait for them……

  • I have a Toshiba satellite P840/00H Intel ULV Core i5-3317U (BGA) Processor 14" Touch screen 8GB RAM 1TB HDD
2GB nvidia gforce gt 630m windows 8 only. For sale little use dont like windows 8. In Brisbane perfect condition.

    • those are good system, win 8 is not that bad if u convert it to win7 like or wait for Win 8.1

too bad i am in NSW lol

  • Another HN purchaser here,

The unusual screen size takes a while to get used to, it's only 14.5cm high. Unless all panels, tabs, address bar etc are placed to the left or right of screen or hidden there is very little room left to view.

  • Whats it like in terms of Youtube video viewing and movies? Im assuming its not in fullscreen for Youtube videos and has the black cutoff on the sides?

I really like the look of this laptop, looks well built

    • The whole screen only gets used if watching a widescreen movie.

      It is reasonably well built.

It has a split screen function which would be good for some.

For the first month of ownership i thought i had made a big mistake, but now i really like it.

  • Pretty good price. Perfect for watching movie or handle office works like excel. But weired when browsing webpage.

  • $634 with pm and ing o.O?

  • congratz OP on ur 700th post.
You have been a great service to all us Ozbargainers!

  • Is much possible on this thing graphics wise? Would games older than 4 years possibly work?

Read this, may help you~ im still trying to get an understanding but I want to know how good this toshiba laptop is if anyone can comment in terms of playing games.

  • Congrats on the 700

We are going to see a flood of notebook deals now that haswell is out.

If this one isn't 100% perfect for you then don't rush to buy it.

  • Hi Haswell - expect further price reductions on older model laptops.

  • got this 2 weeks ago from HN wiley park for $695 with windows 8 do good deal to OP

  • Not sure I'd get something like this for the wacky screen.

To put in perspective my sister bought an acer i5/GT640M based laptop for $599 from MSY 3 months ago…I think that would be more powerful and cheaper, although with a 'normal' 15" chassis…depends if you want a funky screen and less power.

    • also it is a ULV CPU which might be great for saving power, but you'll find the performance not much more than an i3M…and…what's with the keyboard not having a keypad? All that sideways room and no keypad? argh

  • Just picked up the display model of this at DSE Perth CBD for $399. Wife needed something to use when starting uni next semester and it will be handy for the kids to use for watching videos when away from home.

  • Just picked up a new one from DSE for 399 dollars. Check stocks!
