Philips AS351 Android Speaker Dock / Charger, $22.27 @ DSE (in-Store Only)

580

Another day, another DSE deal (if you can find stock!)
Similar to earlier deal (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105484) but looks to be in all stores and slightly cheaper. Seems to be plenty of stock around in Melbourne.
First post, be kind.

Got stock in Perth…very surprising for a DSE deal.

    • Website says there is stock. How reliable?

      • haha..very true..didn't think about that!

    • cheers, just got the last one (demo) from booragoon, garden city. +1

  • good to see plenty of stock around brisbane!

  • Wow, nice deal. I bought a couple of these a couple of months ago for twice the price.

  • A dock charger/speaker system for both iPhone 4/4S and Android would be awesome… under $100. :)

  • Hanging out for the Philips AS141 Fidelio Android Dock to go to clearance price. I initially thought having a clock on it was pointless, as my phone is a clock, so like, duh. But then I realised my phone's not always in the dock when I am in my bedroom and want to check the time.

    • +1

Yeah I would like that model too, would make a great bedside alarm clock, but I grabbed one of these anyway considering the price.

      • -1

yeah admittedly if the DSE near my work had any stock of this one I probably would have done the same, despite it not fitting a nexus4 in it's bumper (the bumper stops it slotting on all the way).

    • Apparently requires the android app to set the clock. Reviews of the app have been scathing. Check it out in the play store.

  • Only problem is some phones have micro usb on the side, not bottom

    • +1

I'm not sure that is a problem. Not really sure why you can't plug the phone in on it's side?

    • +4

the dock micro usb is moveable from side to side so u can still have the phone sitting in the middle kind of …can also turn the micro usb port around as well

  • I bought one of these once, not loud enough, returned it and got Logitech dock.

    • crappy sound quality?

      • +1

its quite good actually.its good enough if you live in a small apartment unit. sold mine and bought a bigger AS851 for $100.
its now 51.75 but no stock around my suburbs.
        http://dicksmith.com.au/product/C5913/philips-as851-fidelio-…

        • I bought the AS851 in Bega today for $48 (small extra discount for having to wait behind some annoying customers for ages). Great sound.

      • I was very happy with the sound quality. Perfect for my living area.

        • are you in prison?

    • I have this side by side with the Logitech PureFi Express and it's better in every way IMO

    • Mine is loud and excellent quality.
Paid $59 and I think it was an absolute bargain…

  • Will this fit the Nexus 7?

    • Yes, even with a smart case fitted although it's not really stable. And I agree about the sound quality. Would have preferred a Logitech if they had one at a reasonable price - I have a Logitech Z305 laptop soundbar and the quality is miles better.

    • Will this fit the Nexus 7?

There is a plastic piece in the box to widen the stand to hold a 7" tablet easily.

  • Got one From North Park(SA) still three in stock @11am

  • Thanks! Great buy.
Works well with the Nokia N9. (I just need a rotation app.)
Sub-1W standby used, turns on automatically when phone is docked, and connects to bluetooth.

Good sound, loud enough for desk, not a room. (rated 2 x 5W, but of course nothing like that with max volume on the phone),

On the bad side, no play/next music controls on the dock, just volume.
Takes 4xAA batteries. Would be nice if it kept them trickle-charged.

    • correction: volume is plenty for a room.

I did not realise that the volume control on the speakers is independent from the volume control on the phone.
Other bluetooth devices I used worked differently.

I listened to one of these in store when it was $40. The sound quality is very ordinary - there's no way I was paying $40. $20 is probably about right.

  • +2

There are 4 more in stock at Chadstone. On the floor to the left at the front of the store as you walk in

    • +1

Only 2 more left at Chaddy now (2pm)

  • Plays music via bluetooth, not through the micro USB according to my local store. I know there are some bluetooth issues out there depending on which Android ROM you are using.

    • plays via bluetooth.
      no issues for nexus4.

  • I got the last one at Prahran!

  • Damn can't click and collect….Can't tell which store has stock I really want one!

  • I got one at Broadway shopping center. There are one more left. Hurry guys.

Just picked one up. I have a Samsung S3. Very happy with the dock

    • Power cord has a nice long reach
    • I have no issues with the sound quality, I'm impressed for such a small unit
    • Comes with a 3.5mm male to male cord
    • Extra USB socket on the back for charging another device simultaneously
    • AUX in on the back (for use without bluetooth I assume)
    • Connector and supports are very adjustable, seems it would cater to any micro usb device regardless of form factor
    • Can go quite loud

I don't think I will install the Fidelio app by Philips, the reviews don't seem kind. Works with stock bluetooth pairing and music player, don't see the need for the app.

Overall, very satisfied! Thanks OP! Looked at these on Monday for around $40, and was very tempted then. $22 definitely makes it a bargain!

  • I have one of these and am pretty happy with the sound quality (although not super loud. it is what it is).

But… i can't dock my Galaxy S3 without taking it's case off. Granted it is a super heavy case (Otterbox defender) but what i am hoping is that someone can suggest some kind of adaptor i can stick on to the dock permanently so as to slightly extend the length of the micro usb thingy.

    Any ideas?

i use something like this. female to male micro usb adapter. i couldnt find it on ebay though. got it when i purchased a yoobao powerbank.
i have note 2 and cant plug it in as well with case on. and this small things helps.

    • Try the bluetooth speaker stand from Aldi, on sale from yesterday. It is not a dock but has a USB outlet rated at about 1 amp.

    • Take a dremel to the plastic surrounding the plug, I had to shave a mm off as my socket is slightly off the base of the handset.
Then reset the side guides and perfect fit :)

      • Yep. That's my last resort option. But would prefer not to "deface" if there is a better solution.

Glad to hear it went well for you though.

  • Just bought one from DSE Victor Harbor.

Just a few things I noticed so far:

-Came with Euro plug (will cost about $5 for a Australian mains plug)
-No need to install crappy Philips app
-Feels like its very well made
-Not very loud, sitting 3 meters away I can only hear it if everything else is quiet.
-Even though its not loud it has ok bass for little speakers.

Probably OK for bedside music and keeping your phone charged.

All my mp3s (over 2000) are uploaded to google music, has no problem streaming them at the same time using bluetooth to.

I would say my Nexus 4 speaker is louder but not as good quality and not as much bass.

Also I'm not sure if it would be louder on mains power as I am using AA's due to it having a Euro plug.

Worth the $22 but I wouldn't pay more.

    • Mine came with both an Australian plug and Euro plug

  • Thanks OP, picked up one from Chatswood. Had my eye in it for a bit, couldn't say no for $22.

  • None left Perth CBD Large (unless theres some out the back or you can convince them to sell you the display one).

    • I was told display only left at another shop, but when pressed (website says stock, not low) he found one out back.

  • Thanks OP, managed to get one.

  • +1

Thanks op, bought two just then at dse eastlands. Was marked at $30 each, with a sign of 50% off so I got two for $30 :)

    • Also just stopped by the nunawading store, plenty left (at least 20) but marked at $22.27 not $15.

    • Wow, great deal slknv!

  • Grrr - Chadstone showed good stock - got there 2 hours later and all gone! Missed the last ones by 7 minutes.

  • Thanks OP. Snapped up one of the bargains

  • Dam they dropped the price and they got snapped up :(

  • I understand it is an android device, but is it possible for this to play music via bluetooth to an ipod 5th gen

    • I can't see why not.

  • i read you could via ipod and iphone

  • i just got one. can it be paired with my pc as well?

    • Yes, or just use the 3.5mm socket on the back.

    • ok it can, it needs a net connection to grab the right driver but it pairs with my windows 7 machine yay!

Overall I like it but a little to much bass in my opinion. Bluetooth streaming from the computer has small audio delay, annoying for movies etc, but this can be fixed by pressing 'j' in VLC player a few times to compensate.

  • Got mine today, staff didn't even know it was reduced. Still had the old ~$44 shelf price advertised.

  • Thanks, OP. Managed to pick up the last one from DSE in Norwood, SA. Was the display model so though it didn't include a box or manual, it was only $20 - bargain!

  • Sold out in Parra NSW

  • +1

Sounds good! The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't attach properly to my Galaxy S2 with the Belkin gel case on it.

EDIT: wow, these things are loud! I'd suggest that the people who have said they aren't loud enough that perhaps you need to get your hearing tested.

  • Last one sold at St Marys at about 4pm, as went back to have a look around after was there other day. Outside those moshi speakers at 3bucks and 5 dollar nokia phone leather cases, was nothing worth buying.

  • +2

Thanks so much OP, because of you I reckon I've had my biggest day of bargains ever!

Just been to DSE Runaway Bay QLD to pick one of these up and ended up getting:

    • Asus N55SF Ultrabook for just $150!!!! Managers Special 1 only (Still in disbelief now)

    • Fidelio Dock $22.27

    • Sennheiser Adidas HD220 $14.98

    • 2 x Varta Battery Rechargers with batteries for $5 each

    Thanks again.

    • wow, that's a good haul :)

    • You were in the right place at the right time.

    • just wondering the Ultrabook cannot be that cheap unless there are reasons for that like refurbished, returned or display. DS always doing that.

      • Yeah, it was a refurb. Still, happy with the price!

  • All sold out in Perth near me :(

  • what a great dock for the price! great as a bedside dock for alarm/charging and playing music during during love making 10/10.

  • Rockdale nsw showed out of stock, but I grabbed their display model. Didn't have a power cable, however the sales guy threw in a digitor one for nothing. Very happy for the price using it with my Lumia 520 . Charges and plays via Bluetooth. $22 well spent.

    • what is the model of the power supply?

Mine is missing the PSU too?

      • 9V 3A 4.5mm plug. You could get away with lower voltage and power if not needing the full 2A charging ability.

  • Does anyone know is it possible to charge a device purely off the rear USB port without having anything plugged in the dock?? I can't get get it to work on my unit.

    • Yep the rear USB can charge. Just tried on my Nexus4. I think it says in the manual that it can too.

      • Yup. I got mine plugged in charging too. But only if something is plugged into the front as well. Can you charge just off the rear solely?

        • Yep, I just plugged mine into the rear with nothing on the front micro usb and it still charged.

        • you do not even need to turn on the speakers to charge from rear.
The specs say it supplies up to 2A @5V total.

        • That's strange. My definitely wasn't charging without having something plugged into the front… Maybe faulty unit?

I'll check it out again when I get home.. In Adelaide for next 2 days.

    • Yes it does. It also charges whilst it's connected to another device. Currently playing through android and charging via usb on an ipod.

  • Got mine yesterday and it's better than I thought. Sound quality very good. Obviously won't suit a large room with other noise but currently sitting in an open plan room. Speaker on full volume but android on half volume and sounds great. Just found out that you can play through kids ipod as well so going to look for another for them.

  • Picked up two yesterday. At $22 bucks yep is a bargain

  • Anyone tried playing YouTube clips or any video's.

I'm experiencing an audio delay/ video sync issue.

    Anyone see that?

    • its normal to get audio lag over bluetooth.
Some players/devices will automatically adjust the sync, otherwise you need to do it manually.

      • Thanks,I never noticed any lag till I put a video on.

how can I adjust to minimise the audio lag to match the video?

        • Sorry, my crystal ball is broken.
RTFM or JFGI for whatever software you are using.

        • Whatever…

  • thanks op…picked up the display unit for $19…not bad sound..

  • Anyone have not using the extension adaptor? (it provides a wider base for phones that have their USB on the side, rather than the bottom)

My unit is missing it, and I require it for Horizontal Phone placement.

Please let me know anyone willing to sell this part?

    Thanks in advance!
