Humax Dual SD Digital PVR Plus SET TOP BOX - WITH REMOTE - NEW! $45 Leading Computers Adelaide

32

I have had one of these for 4 years and it is nice and simple to use and works great.
Yes it doesn't have HD channels but for $45 does it really matter? Plus there isn't much on 7mate, Gem, OneHD or ABC News24 to record anyway.
Couple of nice features is the adskip and the ability to record 2 stations at once and watch another on the same frequency.

Available only at Leading Computers 165 Franklin Street Adelaide. They still had quite a few left yesterday. Ask for Peter. 0408318005

Yes it does… You're missing half the channels…

    • -2

      Half the channels?

      2, 3, 7, 9, 10, 11, 72, 99, 22, 23, 32, NITV, community station.
      are the channels you get.

      90, 73, 1, 24
are the ones you don't get.

In total you have 13/17 stations. Roughly 76% a little more than 50%

      • -2

        90, 73, 1, 24
are the ones you don't get.

        HD channels are :
        1, 12, 24, 30, 50, 60, 63, 73, 80, 90

        • +2

          depending on where you live

HD FTA TV only has 4 dedicated channels

ONE, GEM, 7 mate & news 24. SBS HD does not count since its also duplicated on an SD channel as well.

I would never touch an SD device no matter how cheap it is. Still have an old SD topfield PVR that I never use anymore since upgrading to HD PVR. Even though its connecrted to a TV in our spare room.

      • But you wouldn't be able to record The Sketch Show which has aired on One recently and features the man in your avatar ;)

        • +1

Jv those stations you mentioned are not hd the only hd stations in Australia are gem, one, abc news 24 and 7mate also sbshd technically.

Kabigon I watch the great Lee Mack on Would I Lie to you…

  • Humax Dual SD Digital PVR Plus SET TOP BOX - WITH REMOTE -

Can you name any brand that selling the set top box WITHOUT REMOTE?

That post was on 13.04.2013 and still 50 units available as of today. So they are not selling any unit for weeks.

    Also only 3 months warranty.

  • Sydney NSW, Australia

179 days until analogue TV channels are switched off.

What do you think is going to happen then? more HD channels? or nothing at all?

    http://www.digitalready.gov.au/

    • +1

Most of OZ area is now switched off. Sydney & Melbourne will be last. Brissie switched off last month. Analogue TV here is now just static.

      • +1

That static is Big Bang Theory, playing 24/7 with static encoding.

  • We watch 7Mate all the time do no good for us. The AFL is often on 7mate.

  • +1

SD channels only… Limits the functionality of this PVR severely. (2001 technology)

Mpeg2 tuners… Australia is moving to Mpeg4 soon, don't buy any PVR or STB now that won't support the new standard.

    This is almost obsolete.

    • Any more info on this (mpeg2 -> mpeg4)? What timeframe? Is it a big change or most likely not much more than firmware updates?

      • +1

Given how long it took to switch off analogue, probably a long way off. If broadcasters were serious about Mpeg4 they would have brought it in with current switch of. So no more than rumour so far. Besides networks won't want to lose viewers who can't receive their advertising if their TV WON'T show it.

Many older PVRs will not get firmware updates as there is no money in it. Processors may not handle the extra work. (Not my area so guessing.)

Topfield was able to add 4 channel recording & series record to some of its older units via firmware, but that indicated good initial design. Cheaper PVRs struggle with twin recording while playing a recording.

  • Many households could get good use of a reasonable $45 PVR in the mean time to convert an old CRT or add to a second TV plus ability to record.

I have used PVRs for 8 years. (over 20, all but 2 for reviews) Very little of my recording is on SD, so could live with a SD recorder at this price. (HD takes twice the storage space as SD. A 160GB HDD would fill fast on HD.) But that depends on individual preferences. I upgraded from a SD PVR because it lacked other technology.

    • Exactly my point!
Does 100 hours. Sure it could be more but it is a reasonable amount.

      • Thanks for posting. At this price you won't get HD recording, except on shitty single tuner USB Set Top Box with "PVR functions".
