To be perfectly honest, when I went chair shopping last year I preferred the substantially cheaper Ergohuman V1 ($519 at officefurnituredirect.com.au), but if you're after the Aeron that's a great deal.

    • +2

      That looks pretty good.

A true Ozbargainer sits on one of these…

        • +1

          Did someone sell the floor?

      • +22

Aeron was designed back in 1994 whereas you signed up with that name in 2012 :D

      • +35

        That… Really wasn't funny whatsoever.

      • +15

hmm…. are you one of those like laughing at your own jokes? :P

    • I have a feeling that the ergohuman V1 that they are selling at officefurnituredirect is a counterfeit. If you look at the wheels compared to the official product photos they are different. Cheaper all plastic design compared to the metal based ones in the official photos. Just a minor thing, but I'm kind of skeptical.

  • +54

For $1000 I expect one of these

    • It would be worth it, if the back could recline 90 degrees. Save myself money on a new memory foam bed :P

1000 freaking dollars? What a deal!

Am I the only one thinking ozbargainers are getting richer?I guess this will go well with $79 premium haircut.

We've seen at least two "bargains" for $12-14k cars in the past week or two, so I think you're right!

This chair is not the be-all-and-end-all, but it is a bargain. I prefer the Mirra.

    • definitely a personal preference thing. Have the Mirra's at work and I can't stand them, but the Aeron is fine for me.

  • wish I had one

  • A grand for a chair.

Better be a day trader to make it worth it.

For a chair to be 1k, it needs to be covered in pure gold. Thanks

    • might aswell buy gold plates for your back to preserve your posture.

    • There is the aluminum framed version which costs $1400.

  • These chairs are amazing. Im a chiropractor and these are chiropractic approved chairs.

Chiropractor. Nobody said anything about a legitimate medical professional.

        • +1

duh fred, that was my point. many chiropractors call themselves doctors. obviously with a degree in "massage" and "spinal realignment" to correct the negative energy flows of the body.

You're killing my chi right now.

I was tempted to buy this until I stumbled across this post (<_<)
      Thanks a lot quack.

    • Chiropractors know FA - they deal with fairly simple models of the body - if you don't fit the model, or have some underlying pathology, they'll F you up.

Standing desks are the way to go…for most, not all. I should know, i'm wholly unqualified.

Donald Rumsfeld uses a standing desk. He should know, he's wholly unqualified too.

    • +1

Regardless of what I think of the chiropractic profession, I will always respect a person who has (or has not) studied to enter their chosen practice and consider any opinion they may present worthy of evaluation. Demeaning comments appear harmless or funny and buy you a few lines of fame, but below the shallow exterior people realize they are offensive and hurtful. Show a bit of bloody respect!

      • Chiropractors are conmen, end of.

      • I do not respect the training of chiropractors. I am however prepared to accept that they are human.

Also, you incorrectly attribute my motives - they are designed as a warning. Go see a real doctor if you have significant health issues.

  • +1

I would buy it if its the iron chair of GoT

  • +13

Great chair. I have one. Used to use OfficeWork chairs but they would always deteriorate so quickly and were not very ergonomic. Yes the cost of this chair is high (maybe higher than it should be) but bear in mind the warranty is for 12 years so it is an investment. A bad back will cost you a lot more than a grand.

    • +2

Indeed. I went through 3 Office Works chairs in the space of 5 years before switching to one of these. The Office Works chairs wear out pretty quickly. Not only that, the parts don't even fit right from time-to-time!

    • what does the warranty cover?

      • "Our warranty covers everything—including electrical components,
casters, pneumatic cylinders, tilts, and all moving mechanisms.
It recognizes the changing nature of work and the need for products
that can stand up to continuous use.
And it means that when warranty work is performed in the U.S. and
Canada, Herman Miller foots the bill."

        • I have a German made TopStar which I got from Office works about 2 years ago. Cost $1200 and it just feel apart 2 days ago, the rubber blocks used in its construction have deteriorated like they were made of recycle shoe soles. Had the AU physio Medical Assoc. tick of approval, but one of the most uncomfortable chairs I've ever owned.

Must be how they stop bad backs these days, keep you moving in the vain hope of finding a comfortable position.

  • What part of this char is worth $1000 over a $100 office chair?

    • +2

It doesn't start falling apart after 2 years.

I noticed this a few days ago and didn't think much of it. OP, is this even a sale? Seems like their regular price.

I am very keen to get a chair like this, but Mod: Foul language $1k. Maybe $600 for a high-end chair and we'll start talking.

    • +1

I bought mine used for about $260 on ebay. Great condition and really solid build. I had a string of Officeworks and Empire chairs before.

      • great price. I haven't ever seen one under $600.

  • Or you could by an elcheapo office works $100 chair and spend the remaining $900 on getting approximately 14 one hour massages at the myotherapist etc.

My Mirra lasted 12 years then, one of the back struts gave in, still use it, just don't lean to the left.

Otherwise almost perfect condition, bought for $1000 12 years ago.

Never thought about the gas cylinder, and am now WTF wow, no issues.

    • -8

$1000- 12 years ago, you must be bloody rich back then. No wonder you have to sit all day on Ozbargain to make up for the exuberant spending..

    • +4

My Mirra lasted 12 years then… bought for $1000 12 years ago.

Pretty amazing that your chair has lasted longer than it has existed as a product! The Mirra was designed in 2003: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirra_Chair ;)

If one of the back struts has given in, can't you repair it under the 12 year warranty since the maximum possible age of your chair is 10 years?

      • Whoa, that's interesting, I don't think I was working in 2003, I always assumed it was pre 2003, young and easily impressed.

I'm going to have to look into this, if I can get the warranty on it, for sure.

    • Looks good. Can't wait for the delivery, I've printed out 8 of them using a 3D printer.
Thanks for the cool design that I can borrow.

  • I wouldn't spend that much on a chair if sit less than 2 hours a day, but in saying everyone has one in my office… would be interesting to see if there was 2nd hand ones.

  • This is pick up only? How big is the carton?

    • -1

No cartoon, just wrapped in plastic.

      • It does come in a carton, but they take it out of the carton when they deliver it to you. It's wrapped in plastic on the inside.

        • Ahh you got delivery. When I went to Living Edge they had them all just in plastic. I could see into the storeroom and all those were just in plastic as well.

    • I picked one up from the Living Edge last year - they are fully assembled when you pick up (just wrapped in plastic). Fits easily in a small-medium hatchback. I picked it up in a Corolla hatchback. Great chair!

    Hey everyone,

I really do need a new chair, my current one has recently broken 2 wheels and the padding is horribly deteriorated. I spend 6-10 hours per day sitting at my desk and my back is a mess.

I am really willing to spend this much on the chair as a long term investment even though it would seriously be all the money I have in my bank.

My question is. Is it really worth the money? and should I hunt around before jumping in to this purchase?

The way I look at it is a 12 year investment because of the warranty, so with that being said it is only $82.50 per year.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Cheers
    Payne

    • +1

I'd advice you to have a try of it first. Aeron is not the be-all and end-all. Herman Miller make other chairs as well. Aeron is pretty dated compared to these. Don't go purchasing blindly!

If you really want to get an Aeron, this is probably the best price you'll get in Australia. Living Edge are owned by Herman Miller. It's better to deal with them than any other re-seller. I haven't found a reseller who sells them any cheaper.

      • Hey Antler,

I really don't know what I want. I just want something that is decent for my back.

I have had back issues since I was about 13 (now 23) due to falling out of a very high tree. It constantly gets out of place and always have knots.

When I was younger my mother would take me to a chiropractor for quite some time and even into my adulthood I would go to see them. After becoming a bit more educated I have not bothered with them any more.

Now I study at home (mentioned in post below) and am basically always on my chair, although I do get up and do things every 45min. Getting this chair would really send my broke but it is really important that I do something about it ASAP.

Do you have any other suggestions of other chairs?

        Cheers
        Payne

        • Sorry for the late reply mate. Haven't been checking these threads in a while.

If you have very deep pockets, and wouldn't mind spending more, there is the Herman Miller Embody. It's a more modern approach to ergonomics.

However, if you want something cheaper, I'd recommend trying out some of the chairs by Steelcase. From what I've read, you can actually haggle with those who sell it :-)

Have you tried a standing instead of sitting (i.e. using a standing-desk of some sort)? I've got a number of friends who swear by it. However, it's not everyone's cup of tea.

    • We purchased the Aeron based on historical evidence that they last the 12 years and found other chairs kept breaking as you said.

One thing to consider (and we weighted it carefully) is that this classic style chair is actually VERY unhealthy for you. Search on google for "your chair is killing you" to get an understanding of what the issue is. Those of us that really use these chairs (i.e. IT workers doing 8 hours to 16 hours a day) should really be using standing desks or chairs designed to make your legs work to avoid health issues.

That being said work places don't really give a rats about your health so changing a work environment to use standing desks isn't going to happen in most places. In my view te next best bet is a reasonably comfortable, decent on your back and durable option like the aeron or similar units to sit in so at least your not dealing with back problems as well as the health issues of extended periods of sitting.

Are their better chairs? Probably but the Aeron seemed fine to me. Is it too expensive for a basic chair? Absolutely but most of the ones with proven history are.

We got ours from living edge by the way, they were ok, stuffed us about with delayed delivery as they gave our chairs to someone else plus double charged or incorrectly charged our credit card without authorisation (they wrote our CC details on a piece of paper which is dodgy) but otherwise the chairs have been fine.

      hope that helps.

      • Hey Paulojr,

Thanks heaps for that useful information. Like I said in a later post, I literally will have around $20 left in my bank account if I get the chair.

I am a broke ass student, but I study online through OUA. This basically means I get up out of bed, wonder to my study and sit at my desk…where I say for many hours.

After study, I get some leisure time by watching some funny cat video or porn. So between my bed and my desk I spend most of my time.

I was just about to go out and purchase the chair but I was wondering, do you have any other suggestions?

        Something like this?
        http://www.officefurnituredirect.com.au/Ergohuman-Ergohuman-…

        Cheers
        Payne

        • If you are broke ass student then you should not be considering making such an expensive purchase..

Probably better to use it for food, rent and necessities

        • I have a shit back and am regularly having issues with it. I ended up going the cheaper option anyhow with the Ergohuman.

    • hijacking the first post. For those in SA http://innerspacesa.com.au/ has the Aeron chair for $990 inc GST also.

CBA has these chairs for their call centre staffs to sit on in the new Collin st call centre. wow that is like
5 floors of these chairs, CRAZY.

    • +2

A call centre in Australia ?!?!?! Now THAT'S crazy !

      • Thats why they all move to the Philippines, they sit on milk crates.

  • Quite happy with my Buro Metro office chair; $329 plus delivery with 10 year warranty.

Note: I'm 6 foot 5 inches tall and this chair has not given me any back problems :)

  • After reading the comments about back problems, I am very interested in getting one of these.

Can anyone please tell me where I can try it out before I shell out a grand?

    • +3

Living Edge have them, if there's one where you are.
You should definitely try it out first. It doesn't suit everyone.
Also check out the Steelcase Leap. It's another popular one.

Oh compared to my string of Officeworks and Empire chairs, I can sit in the Aeron for longer periods of time without my lower back or butt getting sore. My butt doesn't sweat either, as the mesh has excellent airflow. That also means your farts won't get trapped in the foam. Not that I fart into my chair. Or at all.
