I signed up but disappointed at the 'specials' for hotels. I just compared to Wotif for Melbourne hotels and $20 above most of their prices on average.

Looks like I'll get spammed for nothing now.

    • I've taken the spam gamble and will have a poke around the site later. Heading to West Coast soon, so looking for OzB class accomm (1st class @ 3rd rates).

Free to join but $49.99 annual fee, which presumably kicks in after 12 months.
Not sure that it is much of a bargain. I have just booked a few stays in the USA and I got good deals from quite a number of hotels, one of which I simply rang and haggled (got a discount + breakfast for 2 added on FOC!)
There is also the other trick; book the most basic room on offer and when you check in, slip the desk clerk a $20 and ask for a complimentary upgrade. Have never had a knockback and I have ended up in some expensive suits for less that $100 a night.

    • $20 trick works for car hire too I've heard.

    • Does this jedi mind trick work in Australia?

      • This is a USA "custom". It's like a tip, in advance.
Aussies give you an upgrade if you're nice enough to them, but no tipping in Australia.

Last car I booked in Aus was a metro job - and got upgraded to a Mitzy Outlander. It was the end of the day, presume all they had left.

I first tried this in the US a couple of years ago and it worked a charm, despite the fact that my surreptitious $20 handover was ridiculously inept; it was the most awkward, stilted and fumbling transaction, well, ever.

  • Thanks - checked a few hotels for Las Vegas and seems to be quite a bit cheaper than Expedia!

  • Hey fellow ozbargainers, I recently went to the states and found accommodation on airbnb.com
Very cheap rates if you're travelling with a group, lots of space, homey feel and with all the amenities you'll need/want.
I went with a group of 7 high school mates and accommodation ended up being around $20 a night pp. Just my 2 cents.

I think I saw that movie "A night in with StiffyMan and 6 mates".
