I'm -surprised- that the regular [Apple-limited] 10% discount generates much interest, especially for notebook with only an i5 CPU & 4GB RAM. :-/

        2 of the 3 didn't seem to have an SD-RAM slot…

I guess they like to vote down deals to hide it, so they can get into Dick Smith first, rather than let others find the limited stock

If anyone is really keen on the superceded macbook airs and DSE don't have them in stock nearby you can get them refurbished on the apple store for slightly more: $928 for the 13 inch, $889 for the 11 inch with 128gb hard drive and $849 for the 11 inch with the 64gb hard drive.

    • Apple price match iPad, is it the same for this?

Bondi and Sydney CBD still have them in stock, i just reserved one. Thanks OP

  • Toombul Qld have them in stock

  • Would you pay $200 extra for the haswell edition?

    • +1

I'm pretty sure the 2013 Macbook Air will feature the Haswell CPU's as well as PCIe SSD's (which is extremely fast - much faster than SATA SSDs such as a Samsung 840 Pro). Haswell CPU's use less power along with SSD's. This would significantly increase the battery life of the next Macbook to around 12-13 hours (almost double most other laptops) which is pretty spectacular. Hopefully PC makers are following suit with the PCIe SSDs.

      • It would have been great if the macbook had a detachable battery. ): The battery life just decreases dramatically after one or two years.

        • +1

how does having a removable battery increase the battery life? the unibody actually decreases the overall size of the laptop. if you want, just get a replacement battery from ebay, it only takes a few screws to change it. ive had my macbook air for over 2 years and the battery is still good. the tip is not to have the charger plugged in all the time

        • Probably more along the lines that if it were removeable it would be replaceable.

        • Maybe thats your experience, but mine is 2 years old and still gives the same battery life.

Is your experience also with a Macbook air or another generic laptop?

        • same here, almost 3 years, still getting 4-5 hours of life from my macbook air

        • im still getting 3-4 hours from my ibook g4…

        • Easy, bring a few spared charged up batteries on the road with you.
One battery lets you work on the road for X hours.
Two batteries let you work on the road for 2X hours.
Three batteries let you work on the road for 3X hours.
          And so on.

      • It's the combination of Haswells using less power AND a larger battery capacity that increases the battery life.

      • Sony is using PCI-E ssds on it's 13" Vaio Pro ultrabook.

    • Nope, I wouldn't (and didn't). Each to their own though. For me 5-7 hours battery with similar internal performance to Air 2013 wasn't worth paying $200 more. Then again, I just needed something to keep me going until rMBP Haswell comes out.

    • I would.

    • I definitely wOOd.

  • All three are in stock at Fountain Gate :)

    • fountain gate mostly have plenty of stock of clearance lines. lucky for me I'm only 15 minutes away if there is a deal.

      • I've been noticing that over the last few weeks. Lucky for you! I used to be that close, but now about 1.5 hours… sad days for me.

  • Ahh damn it. I got mine at JB Hi Fi on the weekend for $955 which I thought was a bargain.. I wonder if they will give me a $55 refund lol..

  • I hope they will have macbook pro on sale

  • Never owned a Macbook before, whats the fascination towards them? Need a new laptop atm and theres stock near me

    • im not an apple hater, but you could get an equivalent lappy for cheaper if you get a windows machine, main difference is the os/hardware is perfectly matched. osx is a bit different to get used to.

    • +1

For an ultrabook, you can go either PC or Mac, it really boils down to aesthetics and what OS you like better. Asus/Sony will quickly match the specs of Macbook after its launch. I like the Macbook aesthetics but will never purchase it because I dislike the OS.

The real difference is in desktop computers where a DIY built PC can vastly outperform a Mac equivalent.

        1. "a DIY built PC can vastly outperform a Mac equivalent"

this comparison is useless and pointless.

        1. it is true that mac's computers are more or less overpriced.

        2. on the other hand, it is also true that the build quality of mac's computers are way better than most, if not all, PCs.

4.Mac's OS is superior to WinX. You just need sometimes to get used to it. (no one is born to know how to use WinX.)

I am not mindless fan of apple, but i do own a rmbp myself.

          1. How's it a pointless comparison? If you are going to shell out $1500 on a computer, why waste money on old components and an Apple logo? Since I need to go, I can't go into further detail, but I'll provide a link that compares the two. http://www.anushand.com/2012/10/apple-vs-diy-desktops.html
          2. What do you mean by build quality? What is a PC lacking in build quality? At least provide some information.
          3. No point arguing which OS is better. Besides, you didn't even explain why a Mac OS is better..
        • Baaaah…….

          1. why is it a pointless comparison?

You can certainly build a more powerful computer with a budget of $1500, if you know how. BUT, this diy computer is not just more powerful than a MAC, it will be more powerful than ANY branded computers of that price tag(ie $1500)!

It is why your comparison is pointless.

          1. & 3.

google it youreself, if you have no idea. it is like asking me to explain why sun rises from the east. i have better things to do.

    • +2

Build quality is different. They're made from aluminium for the casing, instead of cheap plastic. Design is well thought out.

OS X can run Windows pretty effortlessly, you will need a windows license tho.

While PC laptop can generally only run windows, you don't get the OS X option unless you do hackintosh, but then there are complications there in maintaining it.

    • Don't know what the fascination is. That's why I'm getting one to give it a try for the first time. Probably will end up selling it after a week or two.

Glen Waverley have a demo 13" MacBook Air for $809

    • +1

      thanks mate I bought it

  • G'day - I bought the 13 inch macbook air last week for $999 will dick smith be able to refund me the price difference? thanks waiting for your reply

    • -1

Sorry mate, I don't think so.

The only way I see you getting away with that is if you can take it back a get a full refund, then buy the same product.

But the staff at Dicksmith aren't great not because they are bad but because they are way over worked and its easy to say no and deal with the next customer.

But good luck I hope you do it.

    • you could just purchase a new one at the cheaper price, don't open it or break the seal wait a few days then return it with the receipt from last week?

      • Sounds like a real gamble.
