Unlimited Plans Undecided - Boost vs Kogan vs Amaysim

Hi,

Currently undecided whether I should go on either Boost or Kogan or Amaysim? Anyone give me some recommendations on these 3 or any other provider they recommend.

Kind Regards

Boost have the best coverage of the three Telstra resellers.. They get access to the entire NextG network, rather than just a portion.

    • +1 I am thinking about changing over to Boost Mobile when my Telstra contract ends, now that Telstra are charging $15 per additional GB. Boost Mobile offers the best reception of all resellers, with a very fair amount of data for $40 per month. Would miss Telstra's 4G though, not that I download that much.

    • So many +1s for Boost; combine it with this deal and you're set http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/109413
I had Amaysim and the network coverage is night and day

      • +1

        and you're set

        Yeah, for a month.

      • Quite, and I wouldn't countenance $13.33 a-gigabyte in any future event. ($40pm / 3GB )… cf. data~.

        ~3GB by 8Mbit= 1 h; QED : $peed is for racers

  • +3

TPG if you want international calls and/or Vaya if you don't mind being on the Optus network.

      • +18

Anyone give me some recommendations on these 3 or any other provider they recommend.

      • -3

        GTFO.

      • "When you say Vaya if you don't mind being on the Optus network - TPG is also on the Optus network."

Uh, Amaysim is on the Optus network, so the OP clearly doesn't mind Optus….

    • +2

Vaya no longer have an international component part of their plans and TPG has cut all plans and only has a 19.99 plan now! TPG international rates: http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/idd/talk_text

      • +3

Yeah, noticed TPG's reduced plans. Sucky of them as I used to recommend them. Not any more as the plan price increases, data and call allowance decreased

    • +1 for TPG
Amazing value and good service from a Telco (did I just say that?)

  • +4

    kogan is best,…….

  • +3

I'm with Boost, faster speeds via 3G/4G no limits on daily downloads.
    Full Telstra coverage.

    • +1

I would say boost out of the three but that's expensive (as compared to Kogan) at the same time..
If you are upgrading from vodafone / Optus, I think you will find a MAJOR improvement in terms of coverage on any Telstra reseller.

    • Telstra resell 3G only not 4G.

      • Ummm Ok

        My iphone says different.

        • is boost work with iphones?

i though i read boost is only available on some phones.

        • +1

Do you happen to have an iPhone 4S? Telstra's Next G network is technically a 3.5G HSPA+ network, which they call 4G in the United States. As a result of this, mobile carriers are actually able to configure whether H+ or 4G is displayed, when you connect to their 3.5G HSPA+ network. AT&T in the United States chooses to display 4G, whereas Telstra in Australia would most likely choose to display H+.

Could be completely wrong in regards to this specific situation, this does happen though.

        • works fine with mine :)

        • I have boost on my iphone 5, needed to be cut down.

    • May I ask which plan with Boost has no daily downloads? I can't seem to find it…

      • Kogan restrict you to approx. 400mb a day, Boost don't have that restriction.

  • I went with Amayasim and the coverage is terrible - go a plan and get a free handset is my best advice!!

    • Optus must have poor reception in your area, and you may not have to pay anything upfront for the mobile, though a 2 year contract + around $10 per month handset repayment isn't really free.

  • That's one of the problems I'm having at the moment do I go on the cheaper Kogan deal and scarifice the coverage? Is it worth saving $15? and I get additional 3gb data if I go on Kogan. But I heard Kogan has crappy download speeds?

    • +6

I am personally using Kogan.. "upgraded" it from Voda"fail". I am more than satisfied with the coverage - even in train tunnels, basements and lifts.

I get a speed of about 6-7 Mbps on Kogan - which is sufficient for mobile browsing - at least for me. Again i was happy as compared to vodafone's 3G speed as I used to get 3-4 Mbps on Voda.

I had used a starter test pack of boost for 5 days before taking Kogan. Obviously Boost has better speeds (I got ~11 Mbps) but for my usage I didnt find it worth paying $15 extra for that.

Overall I am pretty happy with Kogan.

As for 400MB daily download limit on Kogan, on a couple of instances I had gone over that - downloaded about 500MB but the 3G didnt turn off. Not sure if its only with me or with everyone.

      • I've had a email warning from Kogan about exceeding the 400mb limit more than 3 times in a month. I was furious because they changed the terms and conditions to include that, it was never there when I signed up in December.

Absolute bullshit since there's a 6gb limit, if I use that limit in 10 days then that's my bad luck I've got no net for the rest of the month.

Aside from that they've been great, I was with Vodafone and hated it. Had just switched to Optus but after big issues with them I cancelled that contract and switched over to Kogan. They have given me (Telstra's network) the best service since I've had a mobile.

I've never been without signal and always had better signal than people around me on Virgin, Optus and Vodafail.

    • I would personally choose Boost Mobile, due to better mobile coverage + faster download speeds. I also find it hard to take the 6GB of data too seriously, with the daily limit. When you really need to use that much data on a mobile, the chances are that you need more than 400MB in the one day.

Having said all of this, Kogan Mobile is still a good deal if you live and work in metro areas and aren't too data hungry!

  • I am pretty happy with Amaysim as you go prepaid, but if you are a real tightarse DODO 'as you go' prepaid is 1c cheaper!

  • Kogan, havnt had a problem. Cheap $29 inc 6 gb data @ 400mb per day and unlimited calls to any mobile or landline. By the way, you would have to be thrashing your mobile to use 400mb per day. Can't go wrong, uses Telstra network.

    • True. The instances I went over that limit was when I tethered it to my laptop.

    • Only matters if its 3 days in a month that you went over 400MB per day according to their terms:
Must not download or upload more than 400MB of data on a single day on three or more occasions in a 30 day period or download or upload more than 1GB of data on a single day.

  • A lot depends on the phone hardware. if you have a phone that uses the telstra frequencies then telstra network is the better deal especially in rural/outer suburb areas. I use boost and it seems fine for 3G.

I also use amaysim (for a tablet) which is optus network which is ok but would be better if your hardware was focussed on the optus frequencies. I do not use social apps much but have had no trouble with the amaysim 1mb increments. It used no more than when on Telstra.

Worst option is to try to use a network that is not properly designed for your phone, ie a telstra focussed phone on an optus network or vice versa.

My galaxy s3 is a T version (from vodafone) and is therefore modified to use telstra frequencies.

  • Many modern handsets support 850Mhz and 900Mhz frequencies (Telstra and Optus). Many phones are made with multi band support for the various countries they are sold including here in Australia.
The 850Mhz frequency has been known to penetrate walls better and work in lifts and basements a bit better for that reason (I believe due to lower frequency). If you have a phone with a crappy antenna in it then of course that would effect things. 850Mhz would always be my pick of network (Telstra's network). Soon providers here will be able to use the 800Mhz (or is it 750Mhz?) frequency I hear which could be even better.

    • There are the same benefits with the 900MHz frequency as with 850MHz.

Australia won't be getting 800Mhz as it overlaps with 850Mhz (as you'd expect). Instead we are getting something better - 700MHz APAC! But thats a while away still.

  • i just had to leave amaysim because i couldnt get reception in my apartment (in inner west of sydney!). Suspect its more to do with the optus network but hey. Now with Aldi believe it or not.

    • Many are complaining about Optus's 3G coverage lately it seems (Amaysim being a user of Optus's 3G network). How do you find Aldi? Should be exactly the same as Kogan in terms of network coverage/experience received.

      • Coverage is excellent. I was pretty happy with Amaysim but not being able to get coverage at home obviously is a bit problem..

Our iinet at home is playing up (different story!) so we are sometimes forced to do a wifi hotspot which runs reasonably well. I also could never get data at my train platform (which is frustrating when wasting time) but now i get full data coverage.

Highly recomended, although the set up procedures were a little bit weird.

  • If you're comparing Boost vs Kogan vs Amaysim I assume you are looking for prepaid unlimited?

Out of those three, Kogan is the cheapest ($30). It uses a bit over half the Telstra 3G network. But! They have been the most controversial. Their wholesaler was suspending users and blocking recharges at whim which culminated in a lawsuit. Apparently they might be ok now, but they are still trimming 1% of users each month apparently.

Boost/Amaysim are the same price ($40). Boost runs on the whole Telstra 3G network, which is by far the largest. Amaysim runs on the whole Optus 3G network, which is the smallest here (but larger than Vodafone's). Out of these two I'd choose Boost. Telstra has a much larger network which is also usually faster.

    So, overall I recommend Boost.

    • when you say "Kogan is the cheapest ($30)" how did you work out that figure? Just wondering as I get:

      • sim = $20 ($5 + $15 del )
      • unlimited for 1 year = $299

      $26.66/month ( or $25/month if you don't count the sim )

Question is - is the speed 'boost' worth the extra $15 per month to go from kogan to boost?

      • That price is only if you want to commit to a whole years subscription otherwise it's $29/m. Also they recently got rid of the $5 sim including shipping (but you had to wait 6 weeks).

Boost also only has half the mobile data quota of Kogan (3 vs 6) so consider that too.

I personally wouldn't have any trouble blowing 3, or even 6gb away especially since they count per MB so I went with Kogan.

Had I seen the boost offer, I would have gone with them for the first month so I could compare though.

      • I think in reality unless you r down load- watching the heaviest type of web- media portals, say- Hulu > Netflix > hdTube (on mobile), then it safe to say, we'll hardly use 8Mbit (1MB/s!). The other 'pages, 4-7M is right on perfect.

  • looks like another telstra 3g reseller entered the market not sure if they are any good. ref http://www.mysaver.net.au/

    Hi Op, Great question.

    AldiMobile. Period.

I used to use Telstra, but way too overpriced.

Then tested Amaysim (optus network) for a month. At times it was good, but too often it had limited or no reception where Telstra had no issues.

Data speeds are horrendous on Amaysim.

So I shifted to AldiMobile (uses part of Telstra network), and am pleasantly surprised by them.

$35 per month unlimited, 5GB data, and great reception and amazing data speeds.

The choice is simple for me, and now I've had quite a few friends and family members change to Aldimobile from Telstra.

  • I can't say even good things about Kogan. Was with Optus, tried amaysim, and now on Kogan. Its the cheapest and the customer service was not too bad so far. Speed is amazing compared to amaysim and optus, and I get reception everywhere. Its up to you - is it worth paying the extra money for extra speed? personally I won't, quite happy with the speed so far. Order a Kogan sim for$5.95, try it out for a week for free then decide whether you want to commit.

  • Anyone knows if there are prepaid providers (other than Boost) that allows tethering from iPhone?

I know Optus doesn't allow it.

    Thanks.

    • Not sure of iPhone but tethering works well on Android with Kogan that I am currently using.

  • Kogan, no problem with it and very happy. Saving shit loads of money!

  • I've been on Kogan now for over 4months, loving it, havn't had any issues and everything works well, I'm a low data user tho, as Im mostly in wifi range, so about 1gig a month,

  • +1

    boost chocolate is yummy

  • Silly question I'm sure, but can you set Kogan to 'auto top-up'. I don't want to mess around remembering to add credit to their unlimited plan.

    • +1

yes if you have it on a credit card it will auto charge each month

  • Just the sort of question I am considering at the moment.

Had an unlimited BYO plan on Telstra and use them for reliable coverage without drop outs, though $99 p/m unlimited versus the options make it a no brainer.

Are there any other Telstra 3G resellers which use the full Telstra 3G network or is this just confined to Boost presently?

I was looking at Aldi and Kogan, though I'd not be interested in partial network coverage. Cheers all, great information so far! :-)

  • +2

Boost will also give you a significant data speed benefit over even the other Telstra network competitors such as Kogan and Aldi. For starters, they do not have the speed cap that all competitors going through Telstra wholesale do. Boost have a different arrangement with Telstra, which is why they have access to the full NextG network. They also have the advantage of 3.5G speed for devices capable of that speed, so they are substantially faster.

Despite stating that they charge for data per mb they up to this time are charging per kb as they are using the same billing as Telstra prepaid so the data goes further. Personally I think that all these factors make them the best value for money, especially when you consider that you can buy the starter packs on their website for $20 for one month of unlimited use! At that price, how can you lose?

  • +3

Thanks Engage, I did a little bit more research to support what you had said.

Some general information on comparison between Boost, Aldi and Kogan.

    http://www.bit.com.au/News/335705,boost-mobile-vs-aldi-kogan…

    Then the speed variance.

Boost is a full 42mbps speed (it has access to DC-HSPA, due to its direct relationship with Telstra, rather than as a wholesaler).

    Kogan/Aldi are limited to 7.2mbps.

Real world performance of Telstra 3G is often significantly better than 7.2mbps (on a compatible device).

    • Boost is supported by the whole 3G Telstra Next G network with 2.1m sqkm 3G coverage. (99.3% pop coverage).
    • Kogan & Aldi are supported by the Telstra Wholesale network with 0.96m sqkm 3G coverage (97% pop coverage) plus some 2G coverage adding up to 98.5% population coverage (unspecified total surface coverage).
  • I went from Telstra 80 per month, to Boost, no Bill shock, same speed, but with more gb allowed.

And yes I'm still on my $20 starter pack.

  • +1 aldi mobile (if your phone uses telstra freqs) $35 unlimited deal with telstra coverage(which is great vs optus resellers)
oh and the sim is $5

  • damn,,,,thought kogan was unlimited. I was planning to torrent with it haha

  • not sure kgan nor boost would offer you to dial China, using 10 of that 35 dollar,
though you can via Aldi; +1o. \o/ thus should make the data $5pGB', effectively.

  • The Kogan sims are now $15 + $4.99 postage…

    • That is steep. Does it include any credit?

      • I agree, but to answer your Question >100 Mins,100Mb Data,100 SMS Included

        • Only good for one week.

  • I heard Kogan uses the Telstra network which seem to have the best coverage for their mobile network (used optus, voda, telstra and personally Telstra wins for me… well not in price though)

But seeing as Kogan is just using their network, maybe the Kogan users get second priority? And weren't Kogan mobile plans getting complaints? I haven't been following the news so i don't know…

  • AldiMobile in general is qyuite good, but note the following:

    1. NO roaming option;
    2. You can't retrieve voice mails when you are out of Oz
    3. Sometimes, hard to get line available when your call out hits "peak hour traffic".
4.Even during "non-peak hour" period, It's annoying that sometimes, you need to wait for EXTRA 3-5 second LONGER than its usual connection (i.e. start hearing the ringing tone of your OUT going call) to get your call out line.

If you need that 5G / 30 days bandwidth, it's worth your while. No contract anyway.

Oh, you also get $10 credit towards your international calls. But once your normal 30 days expires, you'll chew up THAT $10 creidt in no time!! Apparently, that $10 credit is valid for ONE year as per dedcution from their message alert once you start using that $10 credit.

  • Kogan – best value and better reception than Amaysim. I'm switching my family to them away from Vodafail.

  • I have been on Kogan for just over a month now and I can say I have had no issues at all. Speeds are good for what I need and coverage is so much better than what I had when I was on Optus (post-paid plan).

Only issue was waiting for the sim card to arrive. When I ordered the priority shipment was sold out and I bought the one with 6-8 week wait.

No regrets though and for the price you can't complain. Also 400mb is quite a lot too, some days at work I'll download 3 albums and still be under 400mb. For basic browsing you would have a really hard time reaching 400mb in a day and you'll certainly be able to find apps for your phone to measure how much download you have used in a day.

I would say go Kogan as it's super cheap, super reliable and great bang for your buck.
