Jetstar Melbourne Avalon - Sydney $9

610

Update: $9 All sold out

Thanks to Adioso mail alert, I found $9 Melbourne Avalon - Sydney in September. The days are limited. Please see the attached screenshot.

Jetstar's website is always slow when $9 sale is advertised, but this time it is not advertised at all. The website is working fine at the moment, but may be down when it is on OzBargain!?

As you may already know, you need to pay credit card fee. I used internet banking to avoid the credit card fee. I read this news paper article to avoid credit fee by booking on iphone. I haven't tried it but might be useful for some people.

        Flights $9.
Private helicopter to the city fare: $1000.

Ever heard of Airport buses and public transport?

        • At Avalon? There's the bus which will still cost more than the return flights, just to get into the CBD…

      • -3

        Ever heard of public transport?

        • -1

There's no public transport to Avalon airport, only to Tullamarine.

        • There is a bus service there.

    • you'd imagine not many people would fly on that date

nm: someone said it a day ago.

  • I'm getting this when i try to book:

This is a marker file generated by the precompilation tool, and should not be deleted!

EDIT: happened when i tried easternculture's flight times as well…so nothing to do with my selection.

  • +1

Nobody seems to want to fly on 9/11

    • +2

I am flying on 9/11 for $9! LOL

    • If anything though, the irony is that it's probably the safest day of the year to go by plane. Security/maintenance probably increases by 10 fold during that day.

  • Has anyone else managed to book?

EDIT: eventually got it going - had to log out, select flights, then follow prompts to log in. Logging in first didn't work for me…

    • i am on mac.. got error on safari.. but didnt on firefox

      • got error on safari…

You mean the same error i got?

I was using firefox. My concern is there's something wrong with my account setup, rather than their site as such.

        • yeah same error as u on safari.. went to firefox and no error

      • -6

Perhaps you should get a real computer then…

  • +2

    Yep…
    September 9th 8.45pm AV-Syd $9
    September 11th 5.40pm Syd-AV $9

Plus $22 for up front seats ($11 times 2)
    Had a $30 voucher
    Paid PoLI $10

    Total out of pocket $10

    • +2

You pay to be up front?

    • +8

ROFL @ paying for up front seats on a 1 hr flight. Good lord.

      • +4

I had to spend minimum $30 to use the voucher.
Without the upfront seats it was $27
        Lol.

        • +1

Plus it gets me off the plans first and garauntees ill get overhead storage above my seat (flight crew reserve the first overhead compartment for the first row)
I only booked the $11 seats not the $24 ones.

        • Ok, I'll also assume the voucher was going to expire and so it made sense, but seriously if someone said they would pay you $10 for the extra 5 minutes you had to wait (if that), and you could get someone to pay you that for 40 hours a week you'd probably not be worrying about deals on ozbargain anymore

        • Touché.

The voucher was expiring and I was looking to use it. But want going to give up $12 of it so decided to opt for the upfront seats.

For the record, row 1 seats are cheaper than legroom seats and I need legroom due to my height. Another reason I'm happy to pay a bit extra to sit up front.

Why pay $24 for exit row when row 1 is $11 and gives same leg room plus being able to about annoying idiots who don't know how to get of a plane in a timely fashion

  • When you factor in the cost of driving to Avalon airport, you're probably looking at about double that price.

    • +1

Yes, Avalon is a fair way from Melbourne.
Yes, it is a pain in the freckle.

Sita Buses cost $22 one way.
Yes, there is a significant delay b/w the bus arriving & your flight.
Yes, you have to arrive well before your flight time.

No, there is no other practical way to get to the airport apart from car (the train won't help you - you'll need to pay maybe $25 for the taxi to the airport).

Yes, i like saying yes, unless i want to say no.

      • +1

If more than 2 ppl are going its cheaper to rent a car, but only if its a day trip (you'll get a good 8hrs if you get the earliest flight in & latest out excl. travel time between airport<—>CBD).

    • -1

Parking for 2 days at avalon is half the price of melb airport :P

      • +1

Um, no it's not. I just checked and it's exactly the same price at both airports - $49 for 2 days.

        • Well I go Sydney three times a month.
Usually three days parking costs me $ 28
That's where I am getting my info from.

        • That's still cheaper than parking at Europcar Tullmarine … At least you have more chance of collecting your car in the same condition as you left it. Oh yes, Europcar Tullamarine 360 videos all vehicles entering and leaving their site … but for some reason won't use that as proof your car wasn't damaged there. Go figure on that one.

Yes, next time we fly out of Tullamarine (or Avalon) we pay normal airport rates. I certainly wouldn't recommend Europcar to anyone. I could say more.

        • Hmm, I used Europcar the last time I had to park there, and they were fine. I have a video recording device in my car but it only records when the car is being moved, which wouldn't show anything when the car is off, though. Thanks for the warning. I think it's always worth having a recorder in your car, though, because at least if they deny anything, you can use it as a bluff.

        • +1

My own personal comprehensive car insurance couldn't do much to help me at all, as the cost of repairs was actually about the same as the excess. Insurance company said they couldn't make Europcar provide the proof from their videos, although the legal representative did ring them. Guess it was too "small" of an item to make enough of a fuss about, as far as the insurance company was concerned.

The "I could say more" but you may have trouble believing me bit:

I hired a rental car from them at my destination which was clutch faulty, pulled over 3.5 kms away, etc, had to get a lift from the tow truck driver to another depot for replacement vehicle … and lo and behold a MONTH LATER my credit card is charged $800 as they blamed me for burning the clutch out … in 3.5 kms, and also charged me for 1/2 day loss on that vehicle. Ruined that day of my holiday with all the delays etc. Never experienced a problem with a car rental company before this in my life and I even used "Rent A Wreck" once too!

I am still in semi shock with the experience/s I had with Europcar. I am just lucky I had a decent insurance company (not theirs) policy who I don't mind mentioning, and would recommend, "Cover-More" Travel Insurance. Hassle free claim paid in full within the week of claim.

You won't see me anywhere near Europcar at any time in the future.

        • Why would you get a manual rental car?

        • some of us like manuals, you know? also some companies charge less for them so if you're on a tight budget it can help.

        • Liking it for your own car is one thing, but the shitty Hyundai i20 they give you? Are you seriously going to go for a joyride in that thing?

        • who said anything about joyriding? we've had a manual rental car on at least two occasions.

        • I honestly did not know rental companies even offered them anymore. Wouldn't they want to offer cars that 100% of people can drive, rather than a lesser percentage of people? The last time I saw a manual rental car was on a family holiday we did up in Cairns in 1991 - we (well, my parents) asked for a family sedan and they gave us a manual Corolla, much to our shock. My dad had to learn to drive one all over again as the last time he drove one was in the 60s (he had an MG).

        • you specify what transmission you want in every single rental website i've ever used. the majority of them WILL be automatics but the option is there for those who don't want one. the last manual rental i got was 2006 but i have specified auto for the others

    • +2

Avalon is closer to me than Melb..

we aren't all big city slickers lol

      • -1

You live in Geelong don't you :)?

        • No, south west vic.

  • good deal. you can factor in using the money saved into taxi-ing?
too bad my gf doesnt want to go

    • +2

This estimates taxi is over $90 one way.

      I used:

      From: Southern Cross Station, Melbourne.
      To: Avalon Airport Australia, Lara.
      Time: 12pm Fri.

Holy crap - this estimates over $110.

      BTW Thanks to the OP!

  • Avalon airport is toooo far way from mel city

    • +1

time city to melb airport: 35-40 mins
city to avalon 50-60 mins ..

melb airport take 10 mins to find a park
      avalon 2 mins

plane to car at avalon: 5 mins
plan to car at melb airport: 10-20 mins

      Easy choice

      • Flew to Melbourne from Syd twice a month for 3.5 years, sometimes more, have to say that Avalon is a pain and a waste of time and money for business.

however if you are on holiday, are renting a Prius and don't care about losing an extra couple of hours then it could make sense at $9 each way. Mainly for pensioners and the unemployed (ok I am going a bit far with the last part)

Would rather take Tiger in all honesty

  • I cannot fathom what they get out of these $9 fares…

    • +2

Doesn't the profit come from the things you buy in the plane? Food, entertainment, internet, headphones, all adds up.

      • Absolutely no way.

        • I don't mean in general, but with these super low priced fares, that must be where the profit comes from. Plus checked baggage fees.

        • +2

          I just don't get it.
That expensive (1) Jet; (2) Employees; (3) Jet fuel; (4) Security; (5) Taxes.

They certainly are not making a cent out of us … which is fine my me.

… earlier today was talking to a friend interstate & she asked when i was visiting next - i said i was waiting for another $10 fare sale. Ha!

        • +3

Its all about bums on seats.. an airline measures its success based on how many people are sitting on a plane.
Plus the fares are limited number.. so the rest of the plan will fill up with people paying a much higher price closer to the date.

Supply and demand.. the closer you book to your date the more you pay.. as their is less seats to buy.

  • This is so good.. Too bad nothing for adelaide

    • +6

Please get a ticket for 9/11 usama, I'd pay to see the look on the chicks face when u check in one way with no baggage

      • +1

Hahaha. You know those random explosives test at airport security. Yea, well they are not random. So that's enough hassling around for me.

        • I know, they are never random. They should just be up front and honest about it, I'd feel better.

  • Hell yeah! Flying to Sydney and going to hooters for ribs on my birthday! Best bargain xD

    • there's no good ribs places in melbourne?

      • +1

CBF linking it, but the ozbargain with free half rack of ribs at third wave cafe

      • Everything's done better in melbourne right? Hah
The hooters girls do a song and dance for you on your birthday tho.

  • +1

Nice find. For those who didn't bother reading the article that was linked to, you can avoid the fees by paying with a Mastercard debit on their mobile site and you don't need an iphone.

    • You can pay with MasterCard debit on a desktop as well and there are no fees.

      • It's been a standard offer for months. No special trick or anything. Tiger has same offer.

  • -5

You can save $10 and stay home.

  • Avalon to CBD - $42.00 Adult Return.

    THIS IS CRAZY.

    • Yea… I'll prefer a $19 Tullamarine then a $9 Avalon, I'll never fly Avalon anymore even its free

$42.00 R Avalon to CBD and only $12.00 R Tullamarine to CBD with Public Bus+Train (even cheaper on weekend)

      and also,

      1. The Shuttle Bus Timetable for Avalon to CBD is terrible… I arrived there few hours early and wait over an hour on return back to CBD

      2. The Sydney flight always getting cancel, Only 3 flights frm Avalon to Sydney each day, they transferred me from afternoon flight to the available one at night, wasted the whole day at that tiny airport. and Tullamarine has flight almost every hour, or even can upgrade to Qantas!

      • I fly Avalon to Sydney minimum three times a month.
It's always the Sydney to tulla flights that are delayed.
Never been canceled it delayed flying to Avalon. Ever!!

        • not everybody lives near Avalon jimbo.
          only a "special" few.

        • I did… I had flights canceled on both Airport to Sydney before, for Avalon experience: they put all passenger to the next available flight… which is 5 hours later. And for Tullamarine: they upgraded me to Qantas flight 2 hours later.

        • I live in burwood. No where near Avalon.

  • +3

If you are 2 people or more it is cheaper to catch a taxi to Lara Station about $20. Then catch a train to southern cross $6.90 each.

Making it about $17 each for 2 people, $14 each for 3 people and $12 each for 4 people.

  • So the advice here is if you go to Melbourne CBD for fun then do not go with the Avalon route.

    • avalon is closer to geelong that melbourne

  • i just refreshed the flight prices on the adioso site, as it says the prices were from '5 hours ago' and '8 hours ago' respectively. It put them both up to $35.
