  • what difference is this to the carrier air?

    • The carrier air has mesh panels, presumably to stop bub from overheating or some crap like that.

      • i think i can appreciate mesh, since I perspire heaps carrying my own haversack and a baby is like carrying your own portable heater.

this one says mesh too… so not sure whats the diff.

        • You're not wrong, even with the current weather I'm able to walk out in shorts and a tshirt at night with the little one attached to me

        • .

    • also active has recommended lumbar support - air doesn't

  • I would recommend borrowing one to see if your baby likes being in it and if you feel comfortable as both my babies hated being in this.
But it is a great price I did pay $199 from baby bunting.

    • I agree. I bought one off the last ozbargain post for under $100. I really think this carrier is overrated for the price. It hurts my shoulders especially as bubz gets older. I do also worry that there's a lot of pressure around his groin area as its always got red marks around it after use. He doesn't seem to mind though :)
Because of the design, the weight of bubz is distributed solely to your shoulders. I hear the ergo has better all round support as it is also distributed to your waist area. Unfortunately because of the discomfort, I'm already looking at purchasing another carrier. After discussion with other mummies at mums groups, I've heard great things about I-angel which is a hip carrier which can be used up to age of 3.
Pros of bjorn carrier (which is why I bought it) is its meant to be "cooler" than the ergo for baby and slightly easier to put on. It is light which is great when you need to pack the carrier and stroller for a day out.

      • Because of the design, the weight of bubz is distributed solely to your shoulders.

no, the air has lumbar support so weight is distributed onto your hips if used properly

        • sorry, i meant the active, not the air

  • We used this and it was very well loved, in particular for me when travelling through airports it was extremely useful. Oz price is absurd, we bought it in Europe in 2008 for about $100.

It adapts so small babies go in facing you with a head support and as they get bigger you change it so they are facing out and the head support then folds down.

Australia - the best country…. to get ripped off.

    • don't see you complaining when you are getting paid for work?

seriously, some people need perspective. I don't mind bashing harvey norman (0 customer service), but even mothercare folks need a job.

there is a really nice mothercare assistant near my place, nice and helpful old lady and I feel bad that the whole franchise went into administration before I could decide what pram and cot to buy.

      • Wages (at least in my industry) are higher in the UK. We get gouged whether you like it or not.

      • Like it or not we do get ripped off big time. Don't buy your argument about the jobs etc.

  • I bought our Bjorn carrier for twelve bucks on eBay. I think the large chains usuallky sell for about this price (100) the specialty stores are absolute fleece merchants.

    • A good way to go, always seem to be some on there and they sell cheaply… our one showed zero sign of wear and tear after we were done with it, gave it to family for them to use.

  • I personally prefer my homemade Moby (google it) to my bjorn, I have carried my newborn for hours in the Moby with no problems whereas I could never manage more than 20-30 minutes in a bjorn before my back was killing me.

The Moby is awesome for newborns. From what I have read, opinions are split as to whether or not it is good for older bubs - I think it comes down to knowledge about how to tie it for older bubs. I have only used one for my 3mth old so only have experience with the newborn stage. I imagine my husband will use the bjorn a little when bub is older as it's good for carrying front facing when they want to see the world. I'll be using the Moby!

  • this new Active seems to be what was once known as the Synergy, with both mesh and lumbar support

the old Active had lumbar support without mesh, the Air had mesh without lumbar support

hence why the product description refers to the Synergy

  • Please do not buy these sorts of carriers.

They are uncomfortable for your baby, and can promote hip dysplasia .

Stick to carriers like Ergo and Manducca and woven wraps, that promote the M shape /froggy style seating, which is developmentally the best position for your babies legs.

DO NOT buy a carrier that allows your baby to face outwards, as again, it is so so bad for their hips.

See how the legs are spread wide? That is what you want your carrier to do for your baby.

      can promote hip dysplasia

      not necessarily - http://www.babble.com/home/babble-bloggers-favorite-baby-car…

One of the biggest controversies in the babywear world is that “crotch-dangling” carriers can cause hip dysplasia — a condition in which the hip joint doesn’t develop normally and causes pain later in life. While organizations like International Hip Dysplasia do recommend carriers that support the thighs (not dangling straight), the medical literature (including Boston Children’s Hospital, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, and the U.S. National Library of Medicine) cites that hip dysplasia is caused by genetics and conditions in utero — not baby carriers.

      • That's right. If your baby is pre disposed to it, the carrier can increase the chances of developing it.

And you don't know unless you have had them checked with an ultra sound.

Not worth the risk in my eyes, for me anyhow.
