  • How does this compare to Astraweb? My 12 months just ran out with Astraweb a few weeks ago, and I didn't realise that they auto-bill you (if you don't opt out), so they hit me up with another 12 months. Not happy, and this looks like a cheaper deal. It was $96 for 12 months unlimited with them.

    • My 12 months ran out about 4 months ago and they didn't autobill me.

      It's still active.

  • They use US servers don't they? DMCA all over the place?

    • All servers seem to have DCMA, some are just a little slower to react.

      • European servers take a lottttttttttt longer to react. lol. And astraweb takes em down instantly.

        http://www.reddit.com/r/usenet/wiki/providers

        is quite handy to use.

I use tweaknews and it doesn't make a big difference, this has been said on reddit as well for those who actually put some research into their new provider.

Here is a scenario for a high takedown file.

0-7 days on Supernews USA = No problems
7-14 days on Supernews USA = DCMA
7-14 days on Tweaknews EU = No problems
14+ days on Tweaknews EU = DCMA

The question is, why is it taking you 14 days to download something that should have downloaded in an hour of release?

And if you did not not about it yet, whats the chance that your download of choice just happens to be 7-14 days old.

Its just an example based on my findings, basically they don't make a very big difference, I even find that the current American Astraweb after their automated takedown system fills in a lot more then Tweaknews does.

  • A little off topic but I recently cancelled my giganews subscription after having it for years as nzbmatrix got shut. Does anyone know of another worthy alternative as I couldn't find one?

    Cheers

    • There are great or even better alternatives, but they are private.

They are free sites around that are ok, especially if you don't need really old files.

    • nzbclub isn't too bad.

      • Thats a raw search engine, there are proper free indexers out there.

        • Can you please give us some links?

        • check the reddit subreddit, there are plenty of links there.

        • Thanks :)

    • Isn't giganews literally the most expensive (read: overpriced) service out there?

Anything should be a worthy alternative.

  • Very cheap for Usenet though bear in mind that the price is USD so will be effected by exchange rates.

Usenet providers range from excellent to absolutely dire (ie. you cannot get most files from them due to incomplete coverage). I haven't been keeping up with the state of Usenet providers for a long time.

Apparently these guys are Highwinds resellers. Highwinds didn't used to have a terrible reputation although they weren't the "gold standard" of Astraweb & Giganews (Yes I know some of you are thinking Giganews is a ripoff but it isn't when you want 100Mbit+ connections constantly ;).

Anyhow, I'm trying them out with this deal.

I'm unclear whether this "unlimited storage" claim is for real: when I signed up I got a message:

"You signed up for an account that qualifies for a free online storage account from StorageNinja.com. You will soon receive an e-mail with details of your FREE Online Storage account provided by StorageNinja.com, a $20/month value."

Well you can check out http://storageninja.com/pricing and see that $20 does not get you unlimited storage. Perhaps they're offering the business account which is unlimited though, beats me.

Just signed up, speed isn't bad I'm getting about 4.7MB/s pretty steadily with a burst to 5.4MB/s. Even though the site didn't mention it you do get SSL with this.

    • If you're subject to some isp congestion, then the 50 connections would probably help with the throughput if you were previously on say a 20 connection plan.

  • Are ssl secured connections available on the 50 connections ? I couldn't find it mentioned in the plan.

    • Yeah, all SSL.

I'll let you on an a little secret (you perhaps already know this but for every Usene buyer out there ;) - the number of connections is pretty much irrelevant for most people beyond a very small number, say 5.

It does speed things up if the client is downloading many very small items such a jpegs and also having it will be useful should you be using multiple client programs so you can give 25 to one, 25 to another with 50 say.

Having huge numbers of threads definitely doesn't have any downsides but for most situations and certainly for anyone downloading binaries most of the time it's just an exercise in marketing. You can test this yourself by using say 5 threads in your client and seeing what happens.

On another note they still haven't sent me the online storage login :( :(

Yeah maybe if you have 1mbit Internet… lol!

        I get 40mbit with 20 connections and 80mbit with 40 connections.

I don't have access to more connections, 100mbit would be nice… (Cable Internet here)

Even on my old 18mbit internet connection, I needed around 10 connections.

      • +1

The number of connections DOES matter for people with congestion on their lines (at the exchange or elsewhere in the network). During peak times each connection I make only goes so fast, regardless of the protocol in use (http/ftp/torrents/etc). So the more connections I have, the better the speed. That being said, the more connections you have, the higher the overheads and the lower the payload. But generally, the pro's outweigh the con's when cranking up the connection limit.

Eg. I tried another Usenet provider on a plan that had 20 connections. This was easily enough outside of peak times to get my full line speed but during peak times, it just wasn't enough.

        • I don't think you understand though.

These are American servers, you are using international links to get your binary files.

Some ISP's are a little faster then others when travelling to America (better routing etc)

There are even limitations in speeds per connection, because of the distance to America and the amount each packet can hold.

The international links are subject to congestion, this effects all ISP's, although many ISP's have different routes and backup links so it effects them differently.

My point is that none of this matters, as long as you don't have decade old ADSL1 Internet, your going to need a lot of connections to max it out, the number of connections is based on how fast your connection is and the speed you get from each connection.

Overhead is not relevant unless you have reached your maximum speed, even then it doesn't really matter.

In addition overhead is not as simple as it might seem, you can max our your connection with 10 connections, set it to 30 connections and barely have a speed loss.

This is to do with routers being good quality and overheads being small anyway.

Also just FYI, around 50 connections gives me 100mbit, peak, offpeak or whenever I want. This is fact and I hope this shows you the reality of it.

(I was borrowing a friends account and combined it with mine haha)

        • Yeah im not saying multiple connections is completely pointless just that anything more than 5, 10 or some figure isn't adding anything and isn't something that should influence a purchase decision. Giganews EU -> OVH France in my case didn't add anything to have more than 20, home (8Mbit DSL fml) 5 was overkill.

It doesn't hurt to have more though other than client resource usage as you point out.

Also perhaps I'm wrong but isn't adding more connections to a congested exchange/network just going to lead to more connections being congested and do little to improve speed to the end user?

        • More connections won't mean more congestion in most cases, this is because overhead is very small and most equipment has no issue with managing this.

Most of the time its just the international link, and the issue with that is related to how much data it can throughput from the entire country.

However it can bottleneck at many places, your router, the exchange, the ISP, the international link, or the server you are downloading from.

Also most providers give at least 20 connections, so I guess a good rule is to buy that many unless you have Cable or NBN where downloading at 100mbit is amazing…

  • Anyone know how this compares with Easynews?

  • Cheers, just cancelled my astraweb account after 4 years. Way too many incompletes these days, hope this is reliable.

  • if i am already a newsdemon member can i change to this plan or do i need to cancel old unlimited plan?

  • On the $7 previous promo. time to switch to $5!

  • Deal didn't work properly? I clicked on the link, joined but got billed 12.75AUD/month instead of $5 USD :/

EDIT: Ah, the key was to NOT change the country it seems. Grrr…

    • Worked for me ($US5) and I selected Australia as my country.

Maybe you mistakenly blanked out the coupon field or selected another plan ??

  • Still havn't recieved the online storage login >:(

  • Can anyone here offer me a NZB.su or similar invite please??

  • Thanks for this!

Had $7 plan and decided to suspend the account until now.

Their storageninja is the worst… No way you could upload file through non-web method (eg FTPS/SSH)

Storageninja support is the worst too

  • How long does it take for new accounts to work ?

Any have their's working yet, or does it take a few days ?

    • Mine was working straight away.

      • Oops …. My mistake.

User error. Misread my user id by a digit. /*walks away in shame */

  • hey i was wondering if its possible to use ONE account on multiple IP , (not downloading at the same time)

    • +1

On astraweb I could do this fine via vpn, not simultaneously obviously.

      • Can I do this with this service without getting banned ?
It would be great if I could use this at home and at work.

  • What's a good client to use with usenet ? I'm new to this . Thanks

    • I use sabnzbd. Free and easy to use. Lots of guides on the web on how to use it.
