Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 Windows 8 64GB Wi-Fi $577.50 ($70 Cashback = $507.50)

70

WAIT! Yes, this is an Atom tablet, but it performs WAY WAY better than the old rubbish Atom netbooks you all despise. It's quick, smooth, and responsive. You wouldn't think it was an Atom unless you do heavy processing.

I'm not sure when the prices dropped, but it's much cheaper than buying direct from Lenovo ($759).

This model comes with the stylus, but no 3G and NFC.

MegaBuy has it for $572, but mmm, it's MegaBuy…

Shipping is $9.85 or $24.95 with insurance.

It costs more than the popular Asus ME400C but is built better, has a slightly brighter screen, has a Wacom digitizer, full-sized USB port, and longer battery life.

Inking in OneNote works very well with the Wacom stylus. That's the main reason why I bought it!

Note: This runs Windows 8, not Android (that was the Thinkpad Tablet 1)

Thanks to Powerbuy for bringing this up!
You can claim up to $70 cashback if you go through their site first:

That makes the tablet $507.50 (plus shipping). Bargain!

Root? This is an Intel Atom powered tablet that runs full Windows 8…

I added a note just in case other people confuse the TPT1 and this TPT2 as well!

    • what???
      its windows 8 pro

      • Are you sure it's not Windows 8 Standard?

sigh. it's the way i phrase it.
it's ok. have fun buying coasters from lenovo peeps.

i'll stick with their thinkpad laptop series.

That didn't reach my expectations for a post rephrase.

I want you to try again, with some enthusiasm this time.

oh BTW the Australian Thinkpad Tablet 1 (running android) can be rooted. I have CM10 running on mine now. I'm speaking from experience too. :)

    • Hahaha, windows rooted? I'm pretty sure others will try to install ubuntu or windows 7 on it.

      • +1

You can root Windows by right-clicking on Command Prompt and clicking Run As Administrator. :)

  • +1 for the better price than Lenovo, I wonder how many did Lenovo sell as it was just overpriced!
Was considering buying it then but by the time I added keyborad option it was only $100 diffrence to the premium Asus TF810c VivoTab full windows 8 not ther handicap RT ,which I ended up buying Asus as was more solid Aluuminium built, with larger screen 11.6 and better screen calrity. also, has full transformer like removable Keyborad battery dock for 19hrs all day computing which is awesome with Wacom Pen, NFC, even comes with a nice leather case but no 3g though.
But at this price it could now suit some who might not want to spend the little extra, which is still decent value.

  • Can anyone confirm it comes with the Wacom digitizer and stylus? It's shown in the picture but not mentioned anywhere in the description.

EDIT: Answered my own question. The 64GB version only comes with the pen, it's the 32GB without.

    So tempted…

    • Yup it definitely does. You can take the product number from the shoppingexpress website and enter it into Lenovo's Support page (under Quick Path on the right) and it'll tell you what it comes with.

  • One of a number of available reviews for those interested.

    http://apcmag.com/lenovo-thinkpad-tablet-2-review.htm

    • I have set up a number of these recently - nice devices but wish the screen res was higher.

The internal 3G modem is an Ericsson which has its own APN database to try and add CHAP/PAP support. There is a utility from Lenovo to decrypt/encrypt this database from an XML file so it can be edited.

If you are using open internet via your ISP (as most home users would), no worries, but if you happen to have a custom APN so you connect straight into your corporate/gov network via mobile broadband (without dialing a VPN etc) then there can be a few tricks to get it working.

We have some people trialing these as a desktop replacement - using the Lenovo dock with desktop keyboard/mouse and 24" screen in the office, and the Lenovo carry case with bluetooth keyboard for out and about.

Good feedback so far… as long as you consider a tablet is slower than a PC… but the mobility more than makes up for it.

      • A friend of mine is after a 3G TPT2, but the only place to get it seems to be from Lenovo at a terrible price. I had a look at the TPT2 hardware maintenance manual and it looks easy enough to get in to.

Would you happen to know if a Thinkpad Ericsson C5621 WWAN card from ebay will work fine in it? They go for under US$50 so it would be a much cheaper option. The wifi TPT2s come with a SIM card slot, so I'm assuming the WWAN antennas will be inside as well.

  • At 1368\6x768, it's effectively a one window-at-a-time Windows. Quite useless as a productive laptop alternative. If it's not a productive device, I'd prefer consumptive Retina iPad.

    • It might be worth noting that the vast majority of entry-to-mid-level laptops before this year came with 1366x768 screens. Only the more expensive ones had 1600x900 and even fewer had 1920x1080. Some had 1280x800.

Obviously a 10.1" screen is smaller than a 13" screen though, so while you can fit the same number of windows as a 13" laptop from last year, they'll be smaller/

      • Only the more expensive ones had 1600x900 and even fewer had 1920x1080. Some had 1280x800.

I dunno, my 6-year old Dell Vostro 1500 (which I consider bottom-end business laptop) has 1680x1050.
My current Lenovo T520 is 1920x1080, which I consider insufficient compared to fine rendering one gets on Retina MacBooks.

        • You must have optioned it up. The default screen is 1280x800. Check out the reviews for that laptop and you'll notice they all mention 1280x800.

The Thinkpad X200, X201, X300, X301, and all the tablet variants would be considered pretty high-end business laptops ($2k+) and they all came with 1280x800 screens.

Oh on the topic of high dpi screens, I find 1920x1080 good enough unless I'm actually looking for pixels. Obviously more would be nicer, but there's a point of diminishing returns. I love the screen on my Nexus 10 but really only notice the difference between that and 1920x1080 if I'm holding the screen close to my face, which I don't do often.

        • What what one expects when one looks is personal, so, I wouldn't want to get into an argument about preference.
However, for comparison, N10's 300dpi is just the minimum resolution one expects from laser-print, with 600dpi being the defacto-standard for handouts you'd want to distribute at a meeting.

        • As I mentioned, distance matters. If you had a 300dpi print and 600dpi print and viewed them both from a meter away, you might not be able to tell the difference between the two.

All I'm saying is, there's definitely a difference between 1920x1080 and 2880x1600 or 2560x1600, but the difference is diminished the farther away you are from the screen as the human eye cannot resolve such small pixels. It will reach a point where the two resolutions look exactly the same.

With my normal working distances, 1920x1080 is just as sharp as 2560x1600. But as I said, when my face is closer to the screen, I can easily see the difference. Fortunately for me, I don't spend too much time with my face close to the screen!

The whole ppi debate reminds me of photographers who do too much pixel peeping, saying a particular lens isn't pin sharp at the corners when viewed at 100% on a 24MP photo. That may be totally true, but photos are rarely viewed at 100%, so the point is moot unless the photographer has specific requirements.

(note how I've always talked about my situation in particular. Some people might actually work with their face closer to the screen for whatever reason, so the difference is more noticeable.)

        • difference is diminished the farther away you are from the screen as the human eye cannot resolve such small pixels

If we say that 600dpi is defacto-standard for presentable reading material, and (contrary to computer monitors) most people read their electronics pads at same distance as they do paper, then that leads to logical conclusion that electronics pads are read at below defacto-standard resolution.

BTW, effective resolution of electronic pads is slightly higher than ppi because of sub-pixel ("anti-aliasing") rendering.

        • Who set the de-facto standard, and what is it based on? Is it a figure created by printer manufacturers to sell higher-resolution printers?

Anyway we were talking about screens. All I was saying is that a lower-resolution screen will look just as sharp as a higher-resolution screen at a particular distance.

          I'm sure you've seen a billboard close-up. Pixel mania.

Also don't forget you can get a $50 cash-back ($70 if you reserve first) on this -

    http://www.powerbuy.com.au/refer/165E08C8FB/?target=/lenovo-…

Doesn't work if you buy direct from the Lenovo Online Store as we do have a coupon code for that store.

    • Thanks for mentioning it.. I forgot to check PowerBuy!

  • Sold out :(

  • Shopping Express we are still waiting for HP N54L deals when are you going to have one.

  • same here. HP N54L do us a deal.

Also any pricing on the new HP G8 models

  • My friend received his TPT2 order. Turns out it was the top-of-the-line model! It had wifi, 3G, and NFC. That's usually about $970! What a bargain.

Another friend was a bit too late - ShoppingExpress ran out of stock. He ended up ordering one from MegaBuy.

He was charged immediately, then heard nothing from them for a week. By the sixth day I called them up and they said they'd check and call back by COB (it was 12pm). Nobody called back. The next day at 4pm nobody had called back, so I rang them again … only to be told it was out of stock. No apology was offered and the person on the phone sounded like he couldn't give a toss.

    Terrible service from MegaBuy.

On the other hand, my other friend is very pleased with Shopping Express and PowerBuy. Good job.

    • Thats actually standard service from megabuy

    • I can confirm that the model is 3682-49M.

I was pretty happy with the deal as it was presented, but this is just awesome!
