I can't really vouch for Cuisinart or Bodum…

But generally speaking, the Sunbeam EM0480 is the cheapest / best quality grinder that most coffee snobs would recommend as a starting point (around $100). The sky's the limit from there onwards! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sunbeam-EM0480-Cafe-Series-Conica…
Has been on sale at BigW for $99 before…and regularly comes up on ebay or gumtree for around $80 for a 2nd hand one.

If you can stretch your budget, the Breville BCG800 Smart Grinder comes very highly recommended ($200-250) and matches it with high quality European grinders for 3 times the price.

I didn't believe it at first, but many people say you should be investing a decent amount for the grinder because it makes a huge difference in the cup and - if you get a good quality one - will outlast your espresso machine! I can see their point now :)

    Good luck and happy hunting!

  • I use a grindmaster em360 that i got from bigw for ~$30 (on special, RRP $119) and grind straight into an aeropress. Works well.

    +1 for the Sunbeam EMxxxx

But if your serious and cheap its about the coffee, pour for sure but if you have milk them its abot steam froth milk too and the best way is something like this IMO

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/320888024455?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA…

+water, +beans & press a button, then STEAM WAND the milk in a stinless (prewarmed cup and milk jug FYI) and add sugar if thats your sweetner all for about $400

Ive got better, made worse with other cheaper methods but this Saeco Odea is so much better than cheaper methods and just as good as the all-in-one ones too. Remove the ball for auto milk and use the wand to steam milk to taste.

If you want BLACK only then ground+use the aeropress, but it will cost half the Saeco anyway so why bother?

  • Sunbeam EM0440 (plastic version of —>) or em0480

em0450 is actually plastic version of em0480 - em0440 top burr is attached to the hopper and not removable unlike with the other two :)

      • Sorry - yes, you're right Tonester. Got the 40 and the 50 confused.

  • I knew I came to the right place to ask.
Cheers for all the replies, i will let you know what I end up with.

At this stage i think i'm going to go with the EM0480. It looks like TGG has it for $149.
Now the question is do I 'hold out' for another deal, or cut my expectations and just wear the $50 extra, since there are no gurantees a $99 deal will come up again.

or if you don't mind plastic instead of metal housing but with same conical burrs, then buy the em0440 or em0450 to save $60 (or wait until myer has another spend $75 save $15 sale and price-match)

    • TGG has it for $149.

That's a great price. I don't think you'll see another $99 again, or like Tonester said, you could get 0450. Don't know if I'd get the 0440 if it doesn't have a removeable burr.
