I've found some lost footage of mediumsliced at the last OzB catchup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9Ef0ErCU1c

    Great deal BTW! :)

    • Hahahaha! Exactly! I got it Sunday morning, was up till 2 am Monday!

  • +3

very nice deal heard this is a great machine. still quite happy with my $200 sunbeam for now though.

  • this machine is all u need. great price.

  • Hmm not sure what injecting testosterone has got to do with coffee, maybe you work for Essendon?

  • good deal for coffee machine. Not sure about beans, as I'm pretty sure the bulk of the 12kg of beans will be stale by the time I'm through with them.

    • +1

They're in 250g packs, which helps.

      • still will take at least 6 months to finish that much coffee! and please don't tell me to freeze my beans!

        • It'll take me a year to polish off that much. :(

        • +1

it isn't even beans - it is ground coffee. Will definitely be stale by the time you finish.

  • I went to Lygon St in person, Nick, the dude there was very helpful. :)

Excellent find…must resist getting one lol.

      You know you want to.

Relevant review: http://www.coffeeco.com.au/articles/comparison.html (Rancilio Silvia vs Lelit PL041).

  • Highly regarded domestic machine (top of the food chain in fact). And a great price. I will recommend this deal to friends.

  • +4

I have the Silvia (and Rocky grinder), highly recommended especially at this price (I paid a lot more a few yrs ago). Definitely pair is with a grinder of some sort though… pre-ground beans are not ideal and you will want to play with your grind to get a good shot out of Ms. Silvia.

  • +1

Wow this is an amazing price

    MUST …… NOT ……. BUY

    • +2

Why not eh? It comes with 11.5kg of compost!

  • Grinders have had the Silvia at this price for ages (it's the V3 model wit ball joint steam arm, in case anyone is curious), which on it's own is a bargain, but that is a lot (A.L.O.T.) of bonus coffee. Wow.

As tempting as this bonus bonus is, I'm still holding out for a bargain on a Nuova Simonelii Oscar.

  • Hi guys, can someone help me out here for a second. I've never heard of this Silvia machine, but from how people are talking, it seems like it is amazing…? I've read iampivot's link.

I've been looking for a coffee machine and was considering a few at the Goodguys up to about $1000 standard coffee machines from the usual brands. How does this machine compare to those? I realise I'll need to buy a grinder.

If you're willing to learn how to make coffee (and can appreciate the intricacies of grinding, dosing and especially tamping your coffee consistently from a good ginder) it's unmatched in the world of espresso at the under $1000 range (good solid internals, made of brass, for example). Doubly so if you PID it.

If you drink milky coffees it can be a bit finicky, being single boiler (meaning you can't steam milk and pour a shot at the same time, and it also means that stabilising temperature between those activities can be a chore), however none of those things should deter anyone from buying this machine. If all you ever do is put water and coffee in it and give it a wash once in awhile, it will still dribble out better coffee than you pay $4 for elsewhere.

But if you treat it right and learn to love the art of espresso making (forever chasing that godshot), it's pretty amazing.

Better still, a well looked after Silvia will retain a large portion of its value and are always in demand (just check the coffeesnobs for sale forum), so if you decide to upgrade to a new Breville Dual Boiler or even higher in the future, you won't have lost much on this purchase, if anything.

LoopyLou below has it spot on.

It's the benchmark of home machines. Not necessarily perfect or "the best".

In short it's basically a commercial machine cut down, rather than a domestic brand built up with bells and whistles.

      • If you mean bench mark as the minimum to get then yes….get this!

        • +1

Agree. I regard it as the Volkswagen Beetle of domestic machines (Where a 'plunger' ~tricycle).

Good machine to learn on and you can make nice coffee with a bit of practice. After that, it is onto the slippery slope of upgraditis. There is no way back…

    • Thanks so much LaTerrible and LoopyLou, great write ups and answered all my questions. :-) I REALLY want one now! I don't actually want a mountain of pre-ground beans though, I was fairly interested in getting a grinder and whole beans…

      • You didn't hear this from me but I'm pretty sure you can get a kilo of whole beans if you ask nicely.

Anyway, Silvia and Rocky for $899. :D

        • Hey Mediumsliced, r u a rep? Cos I put my order through but forgot to request for unground beans instead. Dunno how to request for it now that the order has gone through already.

        • No man, just a regular coffee-lovin' shmuck. Try giving them a ring or something tomorrow, I'm sure they'll look after ya.

  • I brought my silva and grinder for $1100 6 years ago and still going strong
Built like a bricksh!thouse. Not the best but it will be still around when others have died

  • Sigh… I don't need this. I'm driving an Isomac 'Venus' (+ Rancilio 'Rocky' grinder) at home which works very nicely.

…and now it looks like I'll have a machine for work too. Pre-ground coffee is a dubious bonus - I'll probably have to freeze a load if it is going to be kept. Even with work usage, we'll struggle to get through more than 6-700g per week.

The curse of OzBargain strikes again.

  • Fantastic price!

  • Great find. congrats to those who are buying. Remember to freeze all the coffee you are not using.

I got myself a lowly Alex Duetto II and a Mazzer Mini Electronik

    • Was that a humblebrag? ;)

      • I rather Subtlebrag :)
Used to own a Sunbeam one.

    • and bravo to the people who don't need one and are strong enough to resist :)

  • Great deal, but I'd be haggling to get 2kg of un-ground beans instead of 12kg of ground beans, which will be pretty stale by the time you use them.

I can't believe how far down these have come; last I looked they were like $1200+

  • +1

but such a waste of pre-ground beans?!?! 12kg what the hell?!??

    • they are probably going bad and they just need to get rid of them. might make a good grown-up party bag :D

      • Regifting? ;)

  • Thanks OP - bought one. I've been looking around for a new coffee machine, moving on from my Nespresso machine.

  • Pulled the trigger on this! Been wanting a Silvia for quite some time. Great price!
I asked for beans instead of ground though - hopefully they can sort me out :)

    • Let us know how it goes.

    • I have the identical comment. Fingers crossed!

  • Wow, 12kg of ground coffee is a lot!

I'm happy to get through 125g of beans each week, myself :)

  • Thanks OP for letting us know of this awesome deal - bought one. Now if only they did some of their other blends at an OZBARGAIN price …

  • I thought this might help. It's a really old article but it still applies.

Non-entry-level Espresso machine that comes with 12 kg of pre-ground coffee? Sigh.

It's worth it for the machine alone, but I have no idea what you're going to do with 12 kg of ground coffee.

    Babbie's Rule of Fifteens:
Green Beans should be used in fifteen months.
Roasted beans should be used in fifteen days.
Ground beans should be used in fifteen minutes.
Extracted beans should be served in fifteen seconds.

  • i am looking to upgrade from aldi capsule machine which is ok as long as you drink it within 5 minutes. leave it longer and tastes average. i almost bought breville 8700 with built in grinder for $549 at gg but this may be better deal. any thoughts….

    • Espresso also goes off quite quickly so should be drank immediately after pouring. Keep in mind using the Silvia is vastly different from a pod machine - a lot more work but the results are worth it once you are proficient. Probably not the best machine for a new user, IMO

  • Very good deal!

I have one. It's a year old and is a great machine. I upgraded recently so will sell it if anyone is interested!

If anyone's interested in automating this machine a little, there are PID kits available to manage the temperature and timed shots instead of "surfing" to maintain a constant temp.
I have this one from auber instruments with blue led, pre infusion, set temps, timed shots and steam control for $245 US + delivery (around $45 via FedEx)
    http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPa…
I went for standard post, Had to wait a while for it, but arrived with full instructions in PDF and after around 3 hours effort to install, made life a fair bit easier for those that are time poor ;)
    Very happy with it

fyi domestic machines such as this never make espresso as well as commercial ones

imo better value to spend $500 thus:

    :)

    • +1

i think your claim is based on the assumption that all other factors (including the beans and the person making coffee remain constant. unfortunately it's not true. while i certainly agree that commercial / semi-commercial machines are capable of making an insane espresso., much depends on the person making the coffee, and the beans themselves.

for domestic purposes, I think the Silvia makes an excellent coffee, that maybe only 2% people, probably using yourself would find below-par.

anyone who is getting this machine though - i have the following suggestions -

      1. get a decent grinder (BCG800XL is a decent entry level choice)
      2. get good beans (coffee alchemy in sydney is where i go)
      3. be patient - making a good coffee takes lots of practice, lots of disappointing cups, but incredible amounts of satisfaction once you reach a certain stage.
      4. take care of your machine
      • much depends on the person making the coffee

+1 and how good is the average home boy compared with a professional barista?

syphon and aeropress are much easier/simpler to operate well than an espresso machine

ever since one workplace had a commercial machine (rancilio?) which employees were trained to use, home jobs usually don't cut it for me anymore

        btw good suggestions :)

  • I just bought a friggin Galaxy s3 from ozb and now this comes along….. I love my Delonghi machine for $50. Its lasted 2yrs and is still going strong. May have to buy this for when it finally gives up :(

  • I was looking at the Dec 2012 Choice review on coffee machine and the Rancilio Miss Silvia V2 came in equal 12th place. Still made it on the tail of the what to buy list. It lost points for taste test and temperature consistency when making consecutive cups of coffee. A lot of good points though. The Breville that won looked to have a lot of people comment on it needing repairs, so the Silvia would be better built, more reliable. And this is a good price.

    • +1

I'm a subscriber to choice and a big fan of their tests, but man oh man did they ever drop the ball in that review.

      • hear, hear!

      • I think that the Sunbeam/Breville better models have improved their performance although maybe reliability has not caught to the Rancilio. Slightly off topic but see the recent article in The Age that rates the Breville dual boiler as good as much more expensive commercial machines. http://www.goodfood.com.au/good-food/drink/home-coffee-machi…

  • I emailed and asked about getting whole beans instead of ground. No dice :(

  • Very good price! Should I buy this one? I have Gaggia Classic with bcg800 smart grinder. And it makes amazing coffee everyday.

    • +1

you know what they say, "if you are happy with the coffee your machine is making, you need an upgrade" :D

  • Great deal, but please mark EXPIRED as it's sold out…:(

  • The $499 machine is still available. Still need it marked as expired?

  • Just called Grinders coffee and confirm that you can only get ground coffee. Still good value but I will pass it. Basically you never get 30 sec shot from pregeound coffee in Silvia. And it makes no sense to practice the skill by using ground coffee.

I will stay with my Giggia Classic for longer :)

    • The price of the machine is good enough reason to upgrade :D
