  • Is this a good deal? How does it compare to the EOS-M?

      http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-EOS-M-vs-Pentax-Q/specs

There's the quick and dirty run down of these cameras. EOS-M (especially after recent firmware updates that went a long way to fixing it's tardy autofocus system) is a pretty damn reasonable mirrorless compact. The Sony NEX is still the king of that hill though, but they can't be had for $232 either.

Seems like a reasonable deal OP, thanks for sharing. A quick look on staticice shows this deal is miles ahead of anything locally I could find.

Unfortunately, unlike its handling, the Q's image quality doesn't come anywhere near a DSLR, or the new breed of compact system cameras either. It may have DSLR pretensions and an ISO range to match, but in reality the compact camera sensor at the heart of the Q seriously restricts its appeal.

    according to http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/pentax_q_review/concl…

so eos-m might be a better buy

I convinced myself I needed one - thanks OP :)
    Such a dangerous site this!

Yeah I bought one when it was on special at teds for $189. I really like it, I only used the fixed zoom lense though. Takes some really good close up potrait -style shots. Its actually my favorite camera ever. There are some cons though. Mosty the video mode:- dont change focus whilst recording video so when your subject moves towards or away from you it can ba a bit frustrating to have to stop recording and do another clip.

We hav a new baby so its great for our family at the moment. Because they are all close shots, hes not going anywhere too fast at the moment.

Yeah i have to say for if you can want to buy one camera and use one camera, get something else, for us this one works great for most occasions, and when were out and about we just use our waterproof panasonic (mostly to have the zoom)

  • How it is compared with Nikon 3200 or Canon 600D ?

    Any thoughts ?

    • Those two cameras would crush it.

the two best things about this camera is the retro-ness and the prime lens shots I think

Just think of it as having IQ of a high end compact with interchangeable lenses. It's no dslr killer.

    • Comparing the three, you'll notice that the Pentax is about 1/4 the size of the others.

That's the "killer" feature of the Q - it is tiny.

It's not a "proper" DSLR. And yet, it has interchangeable lenses and many of the features of a proper DSLR (aside from losing out on image quality).

      • granted, but there's a reason why its cheap now. There's small and then there's overkill, personally I think the Q is too small which sacrifices IQ due to the small sensor (the latest Q7 has a bigger sensor). Something like the EPM1 is small enough, goes for $250 new in the past, better IQ and lens selection.

  • Rx100 half the size with 1" sensor. Good price though

    • The lenses are pretty expensive and the zoom is big relatively speaking. If you're not going to fork out for other lenses, just grab a canon s110 for a little more. Obviously the rx100 would be a better option if price is not an issue.

    Good find!

At this price it's a steal compared to other enthusiast compacts. Not the fastest autofocus and not the best picture quality and not even the most stable firmware out-of-the-box…I've had to yank the battery out a few times. Not even the fastest lens in this bundle…but a steal nonetheless.

I love the feature where it buffers the last shot you take and you have the option of saving it as a RAW file after you've taken it (with JPEG settings otherwise on). Love the manual focus on the lens barrel too. Love the tiny size.

No, it's no competition to any large-sensor DSLR or mirrorless with larger sensor, and it won't last long on its battery. But it still brings something unique to the table and the build quality and general ergonomics and UI is excellent (considering the size). Lots of common controls within easy reach without so much menu-diving.

  • The Pentax Q is great for its size. I'd suggest buying the kit with fixed f1.9 prime though. If you want a zoom lens then just buy a point and shoot. Image quality is not as good as my Canon 500D but the camera is super small, I have the f1.9 lens which is fantastic for really low light especially combined with its in-body optical stabilisation.

Summary - only worth buying if you get the f1.9 lens otherwise you're probably better buying one of the other prosumer point and shoots.

  • Good camera, girlfriend bought one from the last Ted's deal, dual lenses, bought two additional batteries and two UV filter lense to protect the camera lense.

I subsequently bought an EOS M from the DSE deal and to me, Pentax Q is much compact and better mobility, can easily fits into my suit jacket or girlfriend's hand bag, which we would bring out more often and more opportunities to shoot photos.

P.S. Since I got other canon lenses and with the joining of the new EOS M, I have to let go of this Pentax (like brand new condition and packaging), anyone interested in getting this dual lense version Pentax Q for $299 please PM me ~ =P

Awesome camera. Very good value at this price. I actually use the zoom more than the fixed lens. Chek out the photos here :

  • Cheap and nice little compact camera.

  • Can this camera take multiple shots with flash without delay (just like DLSR camera)?

    • Not with its puny built-in flash, no.

About 3 seconds separates each shot when shooting with the flash at night. Autofocus time is often slowish after the shutter is pressed, so that adds some delay to flash shooting at night too. Flash shots otherwise work well.

It has a high-speed burst mode that does around 5 frames per second when set on JPEG, but that's without flash use. Every flash will slow you down since it needs to recycle, even on DSLR. Your mileage may vary with a big flash mounted on it (a flash that can recycle fast with 4xAA batteries); I haven't tried this yet.

A DSLR will be faster in focusing and getting back to the scene, and they generally have bigger buffers than the Q for faster RAWs.
