Why are they better than traditional wooden ones with slits?
The Target-Henckel knives fit perfectly in my knife block.

    For this reason we've always inserted the knives upside down.

  besides dull appearance/sharpness, there's also hygiene - how clean are the insides of your knife block slots?
  
  magnetic holders can be more space-efficient as well :)
