I didnt realise people still bought power hungry halogendownlight kits anymore given the price of power nowdays?
But at $8 it pretty decent pricing.

Anyway i had a look at some of the LED Mr16 you guys offer, seriously are they the prices????
After i picked myself up off the floor.

    http://www.golights.com.au/led-lighting/led-globes/mr16/seas…

Looks so close to a $3-$4 ebay/aliexpress MR16 but at 20 times the price.

    Do you sell any?

Maybe i am in the wrong business?

yeah halogen is outdated unless you want to use it to heat your home :-)

yeah halogen is outdated unless you want to use it to heat your home :-)

Correction, …unless you want to burn down your home.

      • Are you joking… LED lighting sucks… Good for greenies or penny pinchers worried about a few extra dollars on their power bill.

I would rather proper light than the pissweak output and strange colours from LED downlights (either the clinical cool white or a crappy attempt at warm white that's enough to make you nauseous).

        • pissweak output?? Hmmm not sure what LED you talking about but LED these days are alot brighter then halogen. A few dollars?? you save about $30 per year per bub, so ten bulb will save you $300 and that just 1 house hold, think the whole street, the whole city, the whole country…how much energy is save then? but then again you are one of those who believe global warming is something made up by those crazy science things right?

    • LOL if you think untrusted chinese led globes on random websites are worth buying, good luck! hahaha

    • for $8 I'm buying 200, to use on some projects where people actually prefer halogens!

are the transformers compatible with LED globes?

    • I would also like to know.

    • GU10 doesn't use transformers, they are direct connected 240V

The "can" on these downlights will cause a reasonable degree of overheating of LED lamps, which require free air (of about 25°C) in order to have a chance of lasting their rated life.

      • I'm an electrician and can tell you that LED's require drivers, not transformers. Any person who tells you that you can "retro fit" an LED to a transformer is a moron! they will flicker and decrease the life span.

Electricity is about 39c per kWh.

A 50W downlight burns, by definition, 50 Wh per hour, which is 50 kWh per 1000 hours.

A few hours use per day makes up 1000 hours per year.

So, ballpark, each one of these lights is going to use 50 kWh of power, worth $19.50, per year. At current electricity prices.

Makes that cheap $8 purchase price look a bit trivial, doesn't it?

Don't buy halogen. It's really bad economy.

    • Electricity is about 39c per kWh.

For most of the population its nowhere near that.

      • So… get your electricity at half that price, and you're still going to burn $10 worth of power in each downlight each year, even if you only have it turned on for 2.7 hours per day.

How often do people plan on keeping the lights? A reno every 10 years is pretty extreme, but let's go with that. The total cost of your bargain $8 light has been $108. Or if it's on 5.5 hours each day, you're up to $208.

Spread 10 of them across your loungeroom ceiling and you're locking yourself in to spending at least a grand on electricity.

That's assuming electricity prices "stay" at half the nominal figure I quoted from the first website that came up when I randomly googled for electricity prices.

My point was, the running costs of halogen are much higher than the purchase price of the fittings. Anybody who is interested in saving money (ie people who would look at OzB) should factor that in.

        • i can't stop laughing at your logic… hahaha they're $8! Some people PREFER Halogen, including me. For that price, its definitely worth it.

How much power do you think your 50 inch plasma burns? and I can guarantee that's on longer for 2.5 hours a day.

Seriously, you might want to rethink what you're writing…

dont know why the negs, may be they dont believe in the numbers.

          http://www.ledlightingcalculator.com.au/

        • Meh, we're just arguing different points.

They're starting from an assumption that somebody is 100% set on fitting halogen downlights. In which case, they're quite right that this is probably as cheap as you'll find them.

If you're 100% set on using an extraordinarily inefficient lighting technology, then by all means, buy up on these and save on installation costs.

By the way, I prefer the soft warmth of candle light, despite the cost of keeping 100,000 candles burning in my loungeroom. Does anybody have a good deal on cheap candelabras?

Dunno why your comment was negged, it's true what you wrote.
LED's are a lot better than they were and are rapidly coming down in price.
