Canon EOS 60D Including 18-55mm Lens - $636.65 @ JB Hi-Fi

1230

I picked this camera and lens kit up on the weekend from JB for $749, which is a bargain itself (the 60d is being superseded by the 70d, hence the drop), but it's come down even more since then!

They have 15% off cameras until Sunday then it'll go back to what you paid. I love my Canon 60D. Great price.

  • +1

Is this much better than the 600D?

I just sold my 600D but am starting to really regret it since it took amazing photos and I'm wanting to take lots for an upcoming trip to NZ and USA.

    • +40

It didn't take amazing photos - you did.

    • +3

The 60D has some decent advantages in terms of overall IQ, particularly in low light, but decent glass will make more of a difference in crop body cameras until you go full-frame like the 5D3

      • +1

I'm a noob to the DLSR camera scene, how does this one compare with the recent deals JB had on the Nikon D3200/5200/7100? Where would this fit in?

Edit: my priority is purely on image quality not really interested in the bells and whistles for now I guess, just taking good looking shots.

        • +2

Any (cheaper) camera will do really. Pretty much every dslr these days do not disappoint in the image quality department. It's just up to the user to learn to make the best use out of his/her camera. I still have files from my first dslr (20D) and I think they hold up well against my current cameras thinking I only use them for web and small prints.

        • +2

I have this camera and love it. You have to ask yourself what kind of pictures do you like taking. If you are keen on astro photography, portraits, people, objects… a crop body is the perfect choice. And the 60D is brilliant. The build quality IMO felt better than the 600D and most importantly I loved my grip around it.

If you like nature, scenic pictures, you would be progressing towards a full frame camera. Like a 5D3.

However, you can always buy a wide angle lens made specifically for crop bodies (Like Canon's EFS 10-22) on the 60D and take beautiful wide angle shots.

I picked up the 60D as my first DSLR (Had a SLR before that) and I love it.

          And..it supports Magic Lantern :)

Edit: I bought my 60D twin kit for $1800 3 years back, so this is a great price.

        • +1

Good advice, it is far better to invest time in learning how to use a camera, than to spend big $$$ on a camera and keep it in auto mode.

    • +3

I just got back from NZ, really regret not taking the 600D.
A friend took his 60D though and the quality of some of the shots, particularly low light shots, is incredible. If you're looking to rebuy a DSLR definitely go the 60D over the 600D.

      • Thanks for the replies Andy-Laa, thebargainhunter, montorola, Perete, shadowarrior & Puff Braddy. You've all convinced me - I just bought it through westfield for free delivery and extra bonus points.

  • +5

The 60D and 600D have the same sensor so can take the same photos. The only benefits are usability ones like faster framerate, bigger buffer, spinny dial on the back… and resale value.

Given this price point the 60D is attractive.

    • +1

They're the same image sensor but it doesn't mean that the IQ is always the same. I used to have 600D and 60D and surprisingly figured out that the JPG-IQ (using the same lens and settings) of 60D is a bit better in terms of contrast and brightness. However, the RAW image is always the same in both cameras.

The big advantage when using 60D is the battery life. I can take more than 1200 shoots with normal use (viewfinder and LCD preview, management)

I bought my 60D with 18-200mm kit 2 years ago ~$1350. At the price ~$650 for the 18-55mm kit is good enough.

      • Did you use the same lens with the same settings? Coz. based on reviews (7D vs 60D vs 600D image quality), they are pretty much the same (same sensor). However, the focus, control, handling, 60D certainly is better than 600D.

  • With Canon dSLRs, the lower the number series the better, and then within the series itself newer models have larger numbers. eg 1000D is a lot worse than a 60D, and a 700D is newer than a 650D.

As for image quality, I suppose it's mainly the lens, followed by a good match between sensor size and pixel count.

I got the D5200 on the weekend but I have to say I kept looking at the stack of 60Ds for quite a while! Even considering getting it despite having Nikon glass. :D

  • Don't forget the 60D has an articulated screen, didn't think too much of it at first but found it to be very useful. When trying to get awkward angles - such as on the ground looking upward, you can flip the screen out and adjust your shot without having to lie on the ground. Same goes for high over head shots - ie taking decent video over the heads of people in a crowd.

EDIT: PS that is a great price!

  • Can anyone tell me how long is the Australian Warranty for this camera?

    • +1

standard warranty is 12 months with Canon

      • Thanks for letting me know :)

  • I just bought the 60D at the chadstone, VIC store…tried to get the dude to go lower (no harm in trying:-P)..walked out with the Camera and standard lens for $631. Wondering if I should've gone for the +2 years warranty for $79? Worth it or not?

    • Is the standard lens including in the sale? or you get it by trying??
I'm really thinking to get a DSLR CAMERA.

      • The camera is sold with the standard lens included (18-55mm Canon Lens). Normally Harvey Norman and Ted's sell JUST the body for $749. This is a pretty good deal I'd say cos I've been looking at buying this particular model for the past year or so. So far (as far as Australian Stock with 12 months Canon Warranty is concerned) the JBHiFi deal is the cheapest one I've found.

        • Thanks for the info :) I did realise the 18-55mm Lens is included in the price, just not sure if it's the standard one you mention before. I'm totally a new bee regarding the DSLR camera.
My husband and I just came back from the NY trip, and we were using our Samsung galaxy notes as the cameras during the trip. After seeing many people having their big cameras on their neck, we are seriously thinking of getting one. And I'm going to HongKong in 2 weeks time!

        • +1

You could have asked the saleman to give you a special price on extended warranty too. They gave me 2 years extended warranty for $40 bucks instead of $79 :P Actually, I didn't really ask for it, the guy just told me that he could also do a special deal on that.

Also he gave me 16GB Sandisk Extreme SDHC (45mb/s), normal price $38, for $15! Even cheaper than MSY!

        • Can you please post the receipt mate :D

        • I went back asking for a deal on the warranty and they said they cant do it any cheaper than $79…I'm thinking that the dudes at JB Chadstone are just massive douches.

        • Dont waste money on an extended warranty. Even though officially its 12 months they are obliged under statutory law to provide warranty for a reasonable time. If there was an issue within the first 2 years I reckon Canon would have to fix it

  • +3

60D is a great camera, especially at this price. Body alone used to retail around $900 plus.

Image quality wise there will hardly be any difference between the 600D, 60D and 7D. They all use the same image sensor.

Without stepping up to a full-frame sensor camera like the 6D or 5D series, the major difference will be in the lense that you use.

The stock 18-55m lense is okay but nothing fantastic. Depending on what you're shooting, it would be worthwhile getting 1 or 2 decent 'prime' lenses, ie. those with fixed lengths. You trade the ability to zoom for improved image quality, at a lower price.

A decent zoom lense, like the Canon 24-70 L series, is like $1700+ lol. A worthwhile alternative if you want a zoom is the Tamron 24-70: http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/tamron-24-70mm-2p8-vc-us…

  • +1

Spewing! I bought it only last week for $749. For those on the fence, I'd definitely get it at this price.

Edit: for the record, the advertised catalog price of $749 ends today (Wed 24th). The 15% off promotion ends on Sunday 28th so technically today is the last day the 15% off and sale price overlap. I'm not sure what the price for this camera will be tomorrow.

    • +1

Bernie, ring the store, they'll refund the difference.

  • Sorry. Just ask a stupid question as I am entry level looking for my first camera. Which one is better, canon 60d or Nikon d5200? Are they on same level?

    • Theoretically, 60D is better than D5200. 60d is belong to "ethusiast" class, where D5200 is in "beginner" class. 60D is comparable to D7000. I was tossing between 60D and D5200 too, but then decided to go with 60D because I felt much more comfortable holding the 60D. I think this is the most important point.

  • +4

I bought 60D kit from JB last Friday for $715. I just rang the store and was told that JB has 2 weeks price-guarantee so I can bring the receipt in and they will refund the difference. Hope this will help others too :)

    • I just rang the store I bought it from on Saturday, and they are going to refund me the difference in the form of a gift card.. Thanks akatsuki!!!

      • +2

heheh no worries. I'm thinking to use this xtra cash to buy the 50mm f1.8 lens!

    • +1

Weird, I called my store and they said there was nothing they could do for me. I also bought mine on Friday. I wonder if this is a company wide policy or if it's store specific.

Edit: Success! Sounds like I wasn't speaking to the right person the first time. This time I called the person mentioned they have a 7 day pricing guarantee. Heading to the store now. :)

      • awesome!

If anyone happens to find any little extras or price matching, bundle deals etc with this please post them. I'm going to pick one up this afternoon.

EDIT: Found something I'm happy with.

    Winner.

    • Have you received yours? Mine still saying processing.

      • Hey buddy, have not received it yet although I'm assuming it will come on Monday/Tuesday.

Will let you know when it comes :)

        • Kool. don't want to miss out on this one. :D I hope they don't cancel the orders or something.

  • Geez, these things must hold their value really well, I bought one over a year and a half ago and at the time JB offered me the 60D + 18-55 for $740. (ended up getting the 18-200mm kit, but that's another story).

    • Good choice, the kit lenses aren't anything to write home about and the 18-200 is much more versatile.

      • It was the lack of an 18-200mm lens that tipped me over to Nikon a few years back. Otherwise my P&S gear had been Canon.

  • -2

I will buy this when it gets over 100+ positives!

    • +5

Lol good luck actually finding stock then :P

Got the last one from JB Elizabeth st

  • +1

    Ordered 1 … thank jimcat …

Went to the Westfield Sydney CBD store and the guy said that price is for body only. Told him to check catalogue and he just walked away and went to serve someone else…

    • That's funny. I saw a stack at Broadway on Sunday evening. Not sure how many left there.

    • Ask to speak to the manager, it's clearly displayed in the cat and even on the westfield site which then gives the order to JB:

      http://www.westfield.com.au/au/retailers/jb-hi-fi/products/c…

      • Yeah, I would have but cbf as I was on my lunch break and didn't have time to dick around with unhelpful staff. He said to have the 18-55mm lens I would have to pay an extra $100.

        • +1

Just use that link above and buy online. Free shipping.

        • Just as well the city store stuffed me around. Got the last one at Westfield Chatswood. As it was a display model but was in glass cabinet, he let me have it for $595! Been wanting to get this for over a year now so cheers OP…

Chatswood Chase store had 4 left earlier this arvo, so be quick! Otherwise, I'm sure there will be a few showing up inflated prices on Gumtree or fleabay soon…

  • Trusted New York seller B&H sells the body-only (albeit with some bundled accessories) for around the same price as the JB price with lens…and that's before postage. ($599 USD)

But they do offer the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for a USD $300 discount when bought with the body.
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/732047-REG/Canon_4460B…

If you are buying that lens, it's well worthwhile sourcing overseas.
Otherwise, this is a surprisingly good local Canon clear-out.

    • The same EOS60D and 18-55 lens set is sold around 65856yen (A$713) in Japan. It's cheaper at JB-HIFI.

  • +1

    wow it's going 100+ soon…hmm…time to spend…soon…

    • Here I'll help u… click!… 9 more to go.

      • A vote here. Picked up one today for the missus. Now i can have mine back.

  • +1

I bought one! Thanks OP for the GREAT DEAL :D

  • +1

Didn't see any left at Broadway this afternoon, but didn't ask either. They're open till 9pm today.

The Westfield link above may be a better link.

  • Bought one for $631 at JB Mulgoa road. saving $5.65.

Ordered a 5d mk3 body today from JB Frankston, 15% off, reduced from 3499 to 2974.
Cheapest price for this camera from a retail store

    • +1

      Hardcore.

    • Cheaper than overseas prices I've been looking at.
      You've done well.

    • So tempted to upgrade my MkII…

  • Can you guys share the setting for outdoor sunny snap… cheers.

  • Got the last one from Maribyrnong store.

  • +3

JB's had a good few days this week with Nikon trade-in deals and the Canon 60D. Must be driving the other retailers and camera shops batty.

  • +1

Grabbed the last one from Myaree after Garden City had sold out. Good deal OP. Thanks!

  • looks like deal has expired

  • Expired :(

  • +1

It's good that it's expired…it's saved my from myself :)

  • You snooze, you lose.
    This was a good deal.

We might see more of this type of action from another retailer (or see it again from JB). Canon may still have some to offload.

  • For those that missed out, you can always get a good deal on the Nikon D5200.

Currently JB is having a 15% off cameras, which makes it $849.15 with the 18-55 kit.

Take $150 off that (Nikon Cashback) and you have a nice 24mp camera for $700.

    • How would D5200 compare against 60D?

The Nikon has a much better image quality and color depth

        • Thanks mate

      • The D5200's body has far worse handling if you are an enthusiast though.
        (too much menu access)

        • You've been reading too much Ken Rockwell.

        • I actually own the D5100; predecessor to the D5200; I know the pain first-hand. Good sensor, awful to use if you want to change common settings quickly. Not much has changed with the D5200, if you see the reviews.

If you want quick access to controls, Nikon will sell you their mid-range DSLRs (D7000, etc.) but won't offer it to you at the entry-level, unfortunately. Expect to pay just shy of a grand (& expect to miss out on the swivel LCD).

The 60D here gives far more control (and in my opinion makes a hell of a difference).

  • +2

I picked up a D60 this arvo at $636 without hassles.. Also JB Hifi main DSLR webpage has not been updated…. yet

  • Just bought one 5 minutes ago… no problems what so ever.

    • My order was cancelled by JBHIHI…. : |
      Bunch of losers..

  • Yes the deal is still valid. I'm not sure why this was marked as expired. 15% off until Sunday.

  • Can confirm the deal is still valid. Bought one today. Thanks for the deal!

  • I removed the expiry.. Will update to Sunday night.

  • +1

Any btw guys, let's not make this a Canon vs Nikon thread….else the Pentax owners will feel left out :P
Each brand has their pros and cons…end of the day, I chose a camera which I am comfortable using (read previous experience handing it's UI so I can flick through various settings within seconds) and have a lens library already.
They both are great company's and make great cameras. :)

  • +2

Went into JB tonight and they gave me the difference of what I paid on Saturday as a gift certificate!

  • Has anyone gotten the additional 2 warranty for the camera? The guys at JB Hifi Chadstone quoted $79….they said they cant do a better deal on the warranty than that price. Anyone gotten it for lower than that?

  • Anyone know if any more is available at the Elizabeth street store in Melbourne CBD?

  • My order through Westfield got cancelled! I ordered it not long after this deal was posted. My friend's order after mine through JB got delivered already on Monday.
