  • ?price? 99?

  • +2

Yes, i think that is a batgain

  • +3

Quite good price for a Intel Based NAS. Quite alot of the cheaper Netgear ones use the SPARC processors which is not compatible with many things.

You can prob hack this to install windows or linux.

  • why buy a 4-5 years old product.

    • +2

Some people don't need better and buy because of the price. All i need is to access my files within the house from one laptop

      • sometimes due to important firmware or hardware fixes.

        • +11

          its hardly 5 yrs old

it has usb3, it runs atom, 1gb expandable and dual nic

          great value for $99

    • The product still preforms the same function…

  • +1

They are quite good units. Is this the V1 or the V2 ?

Edit: Darn - just checked. It's the V1. But the V2 is going for $135

    • The Duo V2 is going for 135. This is Ultra…isn't that different?

    • +1

Duo is Sparc based, Ultra is Intel based - very different beasts.

  • I run my Plex and Subsonic libraries and also BitTorrent from one of these puppies. Love it.

  • this would be an awesome thing if it would boot off usb and run freenas

    • Does it support any alternate OS?

      • +1

Most OTS NAS's are fairly locked down. There are some hacks for QNAP devices to run Synology firmware, but it's kinda half-assed.

Not sure why you'd want to run Freenas on it anyway, it already services as a NAS, and it barely has the power to do anything useful other than torrenting/usenet (which it already does natively). You probably don't want to be running it in RAID 1 or 2, as losing a disk means you lose all your data. Personally, I'd just run something like this as JBOD and connect an external drive that it backs upto regularly, also implementing a cloud service for critical data.

  • "Maximum Capacity 4 TB", looks like this will not support 2 x 3TB disks.

  • +1

Pretty tempted to get this and 5 of those $30 500GB verbatims. I'd connect 3 to USB ports and crack open the other 2 and just throw them in. Cheapest NAS EVER!

BTW anybody know how many SO-DIMM ports and max memory? I've got 5 2GB sticks I'd like to use.

Just a question as well, NetGear goes on about XRAID2 but what happens when the NAS fails rather than a HDD?

    • +1

If you want that level of security then you have to backup the NAS. That is true for any storage device, not just Netgear. Also X-RAID2 has some restrictions. It's simpler to just get the max capacity disks that you require and run plain RAID.

    • +1

You do realise a 3TB 3.5" HDD is around $140, if you got six of those Verbatim HDDs, it would be $180 and you'd have so many to deal with.

Instead of your plan to get 5 of those 2.5" drives, just get a 3.5" 3TB instead, unless there was some really specific reason.

      • +1

RAID may be one of those reasons and in a NAS, highly likely too.

        • True but Voolish is only going to get RAID on the 500GB internal drives and not on the externally attached drives. With RAID1 he will be spending $60 to get 500GB of usable disk. Plus another $90 dollars to get an additional 1.5TB. A total of 2TB of storage for $150.

Accessing any of the USB drives will incur the speed limitation of USB. Only the front USB is USB 3, the others are USB 2. He should also check with the Netgear hard disk compatibility list to make sure that whatever disks are in the Verbatim can be used with the Ultra 2.

From the Netgear site (and any other NAS site will have something similar)

"WARNING: Be sure to use only drives recommended in the compatibility list, otherwise, NETGEAR Technical Support can and will deny support."

For $175 or there abouts he can get 2x2TB Seagate 7200 RPM drives that are compatible with this unit. You can configute RAID1 across 2TB or you can get 4TB of RAID0.
You it as 1 volume instead of different disks. It's very easy to manage 1 volume. Plus all the storage will be accessible at ethernet speed.

Also, I'm pretty sure the ReadyNas Ultra 2 only uses 3.5 inch disks, not the 2.5 inch in the Store and Gos

Finally, it will also look very messy having the NAS and 3 external drives hanging off it.

  • How would this compare to an older Windows Home Server v1 rig?

  • tis a bargain. tread with caution people - recovering data from these bad boys paid for my boat :)

  • If using RAID1 mirror, if the NAS box fails, can the disks be removed and read as a stand alone drive, or do they use a proprietary formatting ?

What is the difference between the RND2000, and RNDU2000 ? They look identical except the label on the front. Both have Intel Atom CPU. Both have a USB 3.0 port…

    • Nope

      RND2000,Marvel processor with 256MB,2 of USB3, 1 of USB2,Single Ethernet port,XRAID2
      RNDU2000,Intel ATOM with 1GB,1 of USB3, 2 of USB2,Dual Ethernet port,XRAID2 and FlexRAID,iSCSI target

There are other differences - full tech docs can be found here http://support.netgear.com/for_home/

      • Looks like the retailer website I was looking at has wrong info - they say the RND2000 has Atom:

        http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts?id=10204 (RND2000 v2)

        http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts?id=9109 (RNDu2000)

        • Yes - be wary of resellers who cut and paste. If you check the specifications tab on the link http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts?id=10204 it shows "CPU
1.6 GHz Marvell single-core" even though the high level specification summary says "Processor Brand Intel Atom"

How confusing is that for customers ?

One nice thing about Netgear is that their stuff is reasonably well documented so always refer to their website. Plus with Netgear there can be quite a few differences between V1 and V2 of a product eg I think the RND2000 V1 only supports up to 2TB disks but the V2 will do either 3TB or 4TB disks because the V2 has a newer firmware release.

    • Apparently the Duo runs a sparc processor, Ultra runs intel.

Would like to know about the recovery from failure as well.

    • Found this good comparison by the way… apparently the Ultra 2 is an upgraded Duo.

      http://www.readynas.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/ReadyNAS_…

  • Strange nobody mentions shipping yet as this factors in the price:

$8.95 for VIC up to $15 for NSW and QLD.

    • $20 to Mackay in QLD.

  • So what's the cheapest 2TB or 3TB drives for this bad boy?

  • I have been using one of these for 3 or 4 years now.

Use it as my torrent box with transmission, very easy to load torrent remotely also .

Use XBMC to stream from the device .

    Steal at $99

  • I've heard bad reviews about the netgear nas, do your research first.

  • Can anyone comment (with experience) on network transfer speeds? I've used NAS devices before with 'gigabit' networking that have barely been able to reach 10MB/s.

    • I have one of the ReadyNas Duo units (bought in 2010 - older model maybe) and it's speeds are rubbish.

    • This is not for the RNDU2000 but for the RND2000 V2 (ReadyNAS Due) but it gives you an idea of the kinds of network speeds that you can get from NASs and for speed there are many factors to consider. A NAS is not just a hard drive attached to your router, there's lot technology between it and your PC.

      http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-reviews/31929-netgear…

      Good luck with your research.

  • So can you plug in 3TB USB drives into it a stream from those?

  • Just found this - Buffalo NAS, holds 4 x 2TB drives.
    http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Dat…

    • Out of stock within 500km, as usual.

  • For Info, I bought one of these about 6 months ago for around $140. It works great for my purposes (general back up via a dual band Netgear D6300 wireless router) I haven't really tried using it for streaming.

But I can advise that I popped two WD Red 3TB (three terrabyte) drives in and they work fine. Set up was pretty easy and it has a feature to register an e-mail address so it can send you an e-mail if one drive is having trouble etc.

    HTH

  • Will this work with Sickbeard and Sabnzbd? Found a link to loading them on but it's for a newer version of this NAS so not sure..

  • Sold out online!

  • I managed to order one of these before the online sold out, but I was called yesterday from Centre Com, and told that they don't have it in stock. Money will be refund.

    • Was also able to order one, just checked order status was cancelled… But no phone call?

Payment has gone through as well. :/
      Very disappointed in centrecom

      • Thanks for the tip - I checked mine and it was cancelled too!! :( :(

I paid via paypal, and no refund in my account.
No phone call for me either.
        Not happy!! :(

        • I rang just before, apparently there were 3 people affected? and they are offering a refund or a discount on another model and said they will be emailing the details soon.

        • Only 3 people? I doubt it… they probably looked at this thread and counted 3 people who posted complaints.

        • theres a chance of that too… i had a look on their site… hardly any stock on net gear nas' so no idea what they would even offer… probably just going to be a refund

    • Have you guys got your refund yet?

I got a call yesterday and said they would refund the money.
I paid via paypal but no refund yet in my account.

      • Registered just so I could reply, I also ordered when they were in stock and I received a phone call Monday afternoon, so I think that their 3 people is garbage. No refund yet :(

      • yeah i got the email… they offered another nas but it was 3 times the price so looks like im taking hte refund…
