    before u buy travel insuarcen
check with ur credit card provider to see if you get travel insurance
most amex provides it and some gold or higher credits too

as long as u buy all the airline tickets on the credit card u are covered for some things (check conditions)

    • +1

sure but check conditions ie. usually requires purchase of return ticket.

This QBE insurance looks way too expensive even with 25% discount.

Granted it looks like you're covered for more at QBE, but i agree, for ozbargainers who are more price sensitive, QBE cover with 25% off is still more expensive than 1-cover or TID.

Before you rely on your credit card insurance, check the details… Amex travel insurance is pretty bad compared to other cards.

That said, some credit card travel insurance policies are pretty good, with provisions for additional card holders, kidnapping (not covered in some stand-alone insurances!), hijacking, etc.

My last stand-alone purchases were with Australia Post and MediBank… both of which were cheap but had reasonable provisions.

If I recall correctly there are a number of money lenders who give good discounts on travel insurance if you have your mortgage with them. I am sorry that I do not know specifics but perhaps consider this a reminder to research all of your options. Google is your friend and then check online for user comments about each Insurer that you like the price of. If you deal directly you can sometimes get them to price match BUT that is harder because of the significant variation in policy wording.

We are a family who have done a fair bit of travel over the last 25 years (international and local) and we have had to put in a number of claims. Our experience has been that the smaller, boutique insurer was better in accepting and paying claims than the larger, well recognised ones.

Disclaimer - I am a former QBE employee and I left because of their change of leadership and subsequent change in approach to claims management. That is all I will say about that. However, I thought it fair to advise people as to why I have suggested other options before commiting to QBE. My comments are in no way negative toward the fly4best website who I have not dealt with.

      agreed.

Disclaimer - I am a former QBE employee and I left because they paid pittance and the demands they placed on employees was ridiculous.

  • Not price competitive….even with the 'discount'. Try 1Cover.com.au for reasonable rates.

PS - even as a staff member of 10+ years with a pretty good staff discount I never went with QBE as I could get it cheaper elsewhere!

it is not a deal. just very average cover with high price tag on it.

Check southern cross insurance, I found it a lot better

  • I get 40%+ off QBE travel insurance through one of my professional memberships, and I still tend to find better insurance value deals elsewhere. YMMV. :P

  • Not a deal. Other resellers give greater discounts - just google 'qbe travel insurance' to compare.

  • Cheap is not always better. I have a friend who had to cancel a cruise because he got diagnosed with cancer and had a hard time getting the insurance co to pay him back for the cruise costs. He used one of the online cheapies and he said never again.

(He did eventually get paid but only after several appeals).

    • I agree with you check, but given this is ozbargain, i dont think anyone here cares about service, or reliability of the insurance provider.

My experience with budget/discount insurers are its terrible service when you try to make a claim, lots of phone calls/emails, chasing and delays.

so the saying, you get what you paid for, is just as true in insurance.

    • Cheap is not always better

"You get what you pay for" is generally correct, but on the flip side, simply paying more is no guarantee of a better product or a better service either. It really depends on the particular insurer, rather than the amount you pay.

I don't have any experience with QBE travel insurance, but I've twice had to make claims with TID and I was rather impressed with their speediness and proactive customer service. YMMV, of course. :)

    • It's true that cheap is not always better, but when it comes to travel insurance you can often pay less for exactly the same coverage (and sometimes even with exactly the same company). There's only a small number of actual companies that provide the actual insurance, and the rest are resellers. That's why it's worth googling and paying less.

  • I got a very cheap quote from TID the other day. $105 for 3 weeks in Europe including skiing. Noticed that they have a savage depreciation rate for lost belongings though. As always, read carefully to make sure it suits you.

ouch - by qbe as well - is cheaper with better coverage :)
