  • thanks op

    • I did not mean to neg this comment. Anyone know how I can fix this?

      *edit: Worked it out :)

  • Just stocked up on malt extract. $10ea for 1.5Kg extract tins is great. Too bad they are out of stock with the wheat extract.

  • Been needing to pick up a few more cans for my home brew. Have been a bit slack lately due to the weather not really being the best for making some.

Prices seem about on par with Big W where I normally get them from, and with free shipping. Bargain.

    Cheers OP.

Plus different flavours from what I usually see a BW - trying the IPA kit this time…

Yeah that's true. I'm going to give the Thomas Coopers Pilsener pack a go as well. Pity the site requires flash to sign up as a member! Will have to wait till later on today when I can get on my computer as my iPad doesn't support it :-(

  • Is $85 a good price for the full DIY beer kit? Absolute novice with this but I'm tempted to give it a shot!

best bet getting the coopers home brew kit …

alternatively, go to bunnings & get:
      - 25L plastic barrel with a screw plug in the bottom (approx 20$)
      - a plastic tap that fits (approx 2$)
      - go to brew shop & get one valve way twisty water thing (approx 5$)
      - get rubber seal for one way valve (approx 2$)
      - get can of home brew stuff from supermarket (approx 15$)
      - 1kg sugar (approx 2$)
      - 1 bag of carbonation drops (approx 5$)
      - empty plastic bottles (screw top with lids)

      Then you just:
      - drill hole in top of plastic barrel
      - insert rubber seal
      - insert one way valve into rubber seal
      - insert plastic tap into plug hole in bottom of barrel
      - ensure tap is turned off
      - add sugar
      - can of home brew stuff
      - add 18-20L of water
      - wait 1-2 weeks

      When ready you:
      - use tap to fill plastic bottles
      - add 1 carbonation drop per 3-400ml
      - seal & store for approx 4 weeks

then refridgerate & drink when icy cold

= 51$ set up cost for 2 cartons of beer
      = 22$ per 2 cartons ongoing

      • Thanks mate, agree i think just getting the home brew kit would be the way to go for a beginner. For $76 i think ill have a crack. Cheers for the advice.

It's currently on sale for $89 at BigW, so the price is right. Plus if you sign up for the "Order of Coopers" you get a further discount. Add free shipping and you're on your way.

The DIY kit and recipe packs make it dead easy to brew top-notch beer. Everyone is always very happy with what I produce - new people are always a bit hesitant to try given what they've had for "home brew" in the past, but once they taste it, they're very happy.

Biggest pain with DIY is keeping everything cleaned and sanitised. If you get lazy and don't do it right you have a very good chance of getting a dodgy finished product.

I say it's well worth the initial outlay - from there it's about 40 pints for $40 with some patience. And the Cooper's recipe kits make it ridiculously easy to brew tasty beer

      • Thanks for the advice! I think ill give it a go, you make it sound pretty easy. Probably a pretty stupid question but are the ingredients included for a pale ale or do you have to buy separately for that?

        • +1

Nothing beer recipe related included with the kit - just all hardware for brewing a batch.

You will need to purchase a tin, a box of sugar and the "lollies" that go in the bottle. Grab the Refill pack - it has everything you need

          https://store.coopers.com.au/shop/product/australian-pale-al…

edit: whoops - looks like they include a lager recipe kit with the DIY kit. You could just buy a tin of the pale ale and substitute that with the lager tin, but they recommend the "Brew Enhancer 2" sugars with the Pale Ale over the one that comes with the lager. Up to you - if you really want the Pale (it's great) then buy the refill pack for the PA and save the lager for the next batch

        • Cheers mate, purchased the kit and i'll give the lager a go first then hopefully i'll have the hang of it when i make the PA second time around!

  • Does the ginger beer refill pack brew alcholic ginger beer, or can you modify it so it does?

    • +1

It does. You can also make it without alcohol as well. It gives you the way to do both.

  • Thanks OP! Was actually going to go to BigW tonight to pick up one of the DIY kits. Instead, got it for $76.50. Great success…
