Aldi has something very similar in design - Fraser Briggs Premium Lager 24x330ml for 29.99
    http://www.aldiliquor.com.au/beer/lagers/fraser-briggs-premi…
Has anyone tried this to compare it?
The bottle size is different so there's 24x45mls less volume per carton.

    • The Aldi version is truly terrible…

      • not that bad for $30 but it is no James Boags. NZ brewed the aldi Blonde brand is also not bad

        • +1

I haven't tried james boags to compare to ADLI version - but tasting the ALDI "Fraser Briggs" I find it quite drinkable and one of the best "budget" beers i've tasted.

    • +4

yeah - but its made in thailand

      • James Boag's better than Asahi?

      • Anyone know where (if possible) you can pick up the Asahi that's brewed in Japan rather than Thailand/UK?

        • +2

          Japan.

After the earthquake and related situation, they were not able to produce enough beer for export so the Japanese-made stuff stayed there. I was told it would be "years" until they started exporting it again (have no idea if thats true)

        • +3

It has been years, 2 years in fact

        • +1

Check the barcode. If it starts with 885 then it's Thailand. If it starts 45 or 49 then it's Japan. If it starts 93 then it is Australia.

      • +1

So what? Asahi is overrated rubbish wherever it has come from. And its been brewed in Thailand and exported to Australia for years, so chances are unless you have been to Japan, you have never had the Japanese stuff.

        • Asahi is filth. But still liquid gold compared to XXXX and VB.

      • +2

Aldi website says their Asahi comes from Japan ;)

    • +2

I just check the aldi website, and it say from Jpan, will go to the store tmr, to see it really from Jpan or not.

GWD had Kronenberg for $29.99 a slab. Price matched both at DM and 1st choice. Coupon in Weds heraldsun and valid until 25/08. VIC only.

    • +1

Wish QLD had the same offer :(

    • got a scan of the coupon or receipt?

thats a good price for a good lager

      • No scan but if you're from VIC the GWD beer deals are a normal weekly occurrence.

  • Asahi @ Aldi - http://www.aldiliquor.com.au/asahi-4x6x330ml-5-0#.UhWSQD9NHW… - you can get it for $48 delivered, anyone know if this is the Thailand stuff or the real deal??

    • As I remember It is imported from UK

      • Yeah I had a look in-store a couple of weeks ago. Can't remember if it was from UK or Thailand but it definitely wasn't Japan.

And according to a couple of the comments above you won't find the real deal here :(

  • +2

Even better deal in SA as its still $39.45, they usually add $2 because we get 10c back per bottle.
    Essentially price is $37.05

  • -4

This is just a normal price.

    • -2

Uh, to those that negged me, this is just a normal price. I buy from Dan's on a regular basis.

      • Might be normal price for James boags draught but not premium lager.

        • -1

Draught sits at around $36 (used to be $33) while premium sits at $40. I buy this stuff all the time which is why this is laughable, this is basically just an advertisement.

  • For an extra $5 I got a slab of hoegaarden at Dan's. Wheat beer love

    • Wheat beer love

then be sure to visit aldi tomorrow for some flensburger weizen :)
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/114163#comment-1556640

      • $45 for a slab of hoegaarden is much better value (and can only assume taste)

        4 x $15 six packs = $60!

        • yes hoegaarden is cheaper but if you love wheat beer then i suggest trying flensburger - witbier is the belgian version of german hefeweizen :)

  • So, James Boag's, Asahi, or Hoegaarden ?
I am leaning towards James Boag's, but never tried Hoegaarden before so may give it a try. Asahi sounds good as well, although I am not a big fan of anything produced in the 3rd world countries (nothing personal just lack of established standards and processes there).

    • +1

Maybe buy a bottle to try before you commit to Hoegaarden… it's certainly not for everyone.

      • +1

True. I love Asahi and since everyone say great thing about Hoegaarden, I brought 1 box from last sale, and actually really in love with it. Just alright.

  • hmmmmmmmmm beeeeeer………………..

  • Coming up as $39.40 for me in WA

  • my local has it $39.99 as their every day price and 35 sometimes when they put it on special hahah :) Dan Murphys lowest prices guaranteed? More like false advertisement guaranteed =p

    • +1

A guarantee I believe doesn't mean they scour the country for the lowest price and then price lower, it means if you do find it lower you can challenge them to beat it.

But I'd encourage you support ur local anyway :p

      • +1

I see your point however I'm sure Dan Murphys get their stock from the warehouses much cheaper than my local yet my local has cheaper or on par prices on the entire store which just shows how criminal a major chain such as Dan Murphys is!

I always support local/small business even if I pay an extra few dollars but I have been finding it that I save money.. supporting small business and saving money? HELL YEAH!! haha

        • "how criminal a major chain such as Dan Murphys is"

Oh yeah, totally crim mate. Everyone with a profitable business is a crim.

  • don't forget flensburger 6-packs $14.99 in-store at aldi this saturday - fantastic price for beer that's better than any here :)

  • Tsingtao is the best, no doubt about it

    • +2

Not surprised the Tax Office would have that opinion.

  • This is hands down the best Australian beer for the price. Nothing comes near it. Some other beers listed here are nice, but drink a Boags Premium right afterwards, and you can tell the superior quality of it when compared.

    • If I'm buying 'cheap' beer I'd prefer Coopers Pale Ale when it's around $40 (which seems less and less often these days, unfortunately).

Boags is alright too, and $40 a carton is decent these days, but it's really just another bland lager and isn't a great deal better than something like Oettinger Pils — which is always ~$30 a carton.

I'm more of an ale man than a lager (sissy) man myself. (j/k:)

      • I'm more of an ale man than a lager (sissy) man myself.

        +1

strong and dark ales such as stouts are generally more complex and full-flavoured but double bocks are also good :)

  • Thanks, sippin' on one right now :-)

    • No worries. Enjoy

  • Not bad, I'm thinking of stock some :)

    Cheers.

  • I paid $38.85 at Oakleigh South today. With paywave got 5% off = $36.90
