  • Never really considered a ebook reader ever, but since grabbing all those free ebooks from other posts on here, well i might be interested in this one. Suppose two question - battery life?. And can you use ebooks meant for kindle on this (formats)?

    • If it runs Android you can get the Kindle app and view your Kindle books through that (its what I do with my phone). But it doesn't seem to state what it's running.

    • you can use Calibre and some other extension (google it) that can strip the drm from the .mobi and convert to .epub (other formats)

    • +1

There is a wide spectrum when it comes to the quality and battery life of generic ebook readers, particularly TFT screen ones.
Also, LCD screen ebook readers tend to have inferior resolution compared to e-ink readers. You can expect something in the vicinity of 800 x 480, which tends to result in pretty grainy text or images.

If you are serious about reading, consider getting a real Kindle as it is e-ink (easier on the eyes, 2 weeks worth of battery life) and comes with Wi-fi syncing (never have to connect usb cables to download a book)

      • Kobo mini (5") is also E-ink and wireless and the same price as this Aldi one. No colour though, but probably far better battery life if you don't want a built-in media player.

        • Sony ebook readers are currently on sale at JB HiFi for $99

        • Haha, kobo mini screen is as big as my phone. But quite cheap for a proper ebook. it costs 2-3 books only

  • I see an e-reader as an alternative to a book so a color screen and media playback is not something i look for in an e-reader, i have other solutions for that. I would rather see features like e-ink which makes reading the screen just as comfortable as reading of of paper. Our eyes don't like reading of of lcd/tft/what-have-you screens all that much.

  • Is this an e-ink display, or a normal LCD display? E-ink displays would mean batteries that last much much longer than LCD displays.

  • It's a TFT not e-ink. This would actually be an ok deal if, for some reason, you want to watch video clips (not full length movies) without buying a full fledged tablet. But I second and third the above advice to get a real e-ink reader.

The Goodguys have been clearing out Iriver e-readers for around $70 and they have the BEST screens if you don't rely on Amazon for everything. But if you really want to download directly from Amazon without converting anything then… there are other people who can advise you on the best Kindle. (I personally like to convert all my files to DRM free epub format so I don't use Kindles and I'm therefore not the best person to give advice about Kindles.)

Finally, if you really want a colour e-ink screen the second generation colour e-ink screens seem to be hitting the market in the States now. That probably means we'll start seeing them here in about 3-6 months! (The first generation colour e-readers were both expensive, slow and kind of sepia toned - LOL So beware.)

    • Where about can I get the iriver for around 70? It's 129 on their website.

      • I got mine for that price on clearance at Watergardens (a suburb outside of Melbourne if you're not from/familiar with Vic.) You may have to stop into Goodguys to get the clearance prices and it may be that not all places have them or they are sold out etc. Sorry I can't be of more assitance :-(
