6600mAh External Powerbank for $25 at The Reject Shop

130

Saw this at the local The Reject Shop today. Has two USB outlets, one labelled for 2.0A and the other 0.6A. Input is 1A. Comes in either black or white. Was quite tempted but didn't buy it in the end as wife reminded me that I already have two other battery backup packs (albeit smaller capacity). However perhaps someone else may have a need. Also not sure how real the 6600mAH capacity is, but guess it is safer than buying off eBay as you can always return it if it turns out to be widely off the mark.

      Charge your wife?

        Mine blew a fuse…

  • Thanks for the post. Got one. I was next to a store when I saw this post and was searching for a cheap one all day.

Wife was with me so had to do the "brb… just going to look at something".

Build quality is not great but not bad. You get what you pay for I guess. Does the job.

    • Bought one today. So far its better than the Aldi one that I tried earlier this year. But since the 1st Aldi one had a misaligned usb charging port that prevented the plug from going in, and the 2nd Aldi died a couple minutes into the initial recharge. The expectation is not high for this…..

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321113614974

I bought this one off ebay a couple of months back. Similar features (2A and 0.5A ports) and has a built in flashlight and slightly better value for money in terms of mAh/$. And in my opinion looks nicer =)

But I guess you're right about claimed vs actual capacity. Buyer beware as always!

    • And how is the actual capacity? What they claimed?

    • "SAMSUNG cells inside! high quality!"

wat. I have my suspicions… hmm

    • this one is actually US brand romoss. amazon also selling the same model.

    • Seems to have some good reviews - thanks for sharing

    • That Romoss does look a lot nicer. It also looks a lot smaller even thought it says larger capacity than this one?

    • if you went to aliexpress and search for romoss. there are heaps. but the price are still comparable with the link @jzdhgkd mentioned, like this one with a good review AU$30 shipped from china. http://www.aliexpress.com/item/FREE-SHIPPING-Romoss-10400mAh…

a bit worried with your link. as most of sellers form aliexpress selling at identical price.

  • I've got a "50000 mAH" from The China that cost me $24, delivered. I guess the difference is if the Reject Shop one cacks itself you've got some protection.

Oh wait… under the Australian Consumer Law, if something cacks itself (in a manner consistent with it being unfit for purpose or not of merchantable quality) you can put it back to the seller, irrespective of where the seller resides. Ebay makes a note of this nowadays.

Got one and it's on the charger (holding off vote till tested).

6 hours for a full charge - 1A USB input
My unit is white, which is a little different to what's pictured.

    4 LEDs to indicate current charge (25%, 50%, 75%, 100%)
They also can indicate where it's at in the charge cycle (Mine started with 2 lights on so I guess 50% charge already, with the 75% light blinking)

Torch function included for this one (press that button near the leds on top, twice I think).

    -> Diogenes
If you need to return an item, don't you have to get it to the seller yourself? If you pass a Reject Shop, then it's as easy as dropping in, theoretically (I haven't had to do it, myself). But if it's someone in another state or country, then you'll have to pack the item appropriately and then arrange for the package to get to the other country (then keep an eye out that the seller does the right thing and replaces/refunds on time).

    • It took a little over 6 hours to charge and mine had started off with around 50% charge (according to the LEDs on the battery).

I hooked up the 2A socket to my Acer Iconia A1-810 tablet which has a 4960 mAh battery according to Acer. The battery was at about 38% charge. I left the tablet in standby overnight (probably not necessary). By morning the tablet was at full charge and the battery was less than 25%.

So flat battery to full charge is around 3075 mAh (62% of 4960 mAh), plus the device was on the whole night. So, it seems to have at least I'd guess 3500 mAh. But how much is in there total, I don't know.

        HTC Velocity @ 1620mAh

1st charge from 8% to 100% via 2A outlet - 3 lights left - left over night auto shut off seems to work fine.
2nd charge from 6% to 100% via 0.6A outlet - started with 3 lights but within a minute dropped to 2 lights, only 1 light left when fully charged, didn't seem to shut off but I just unplugged it, not sure if I had to wait for longer etc.

So I think my numbers agree with yours, its at least 3000mAh at minimum.

        • 3rd charge from 18% to about 65% via 2A outlet, and the bank died. So I am guessing the capacity of the battery is about 4000mAh, and I think they reach their operational capacity after a few cycles, but still no where close to the advertised 6600mAh. On the other hand its 2.5 charges for my phone and its 25 bucks, not much to complain about.

        • 4000mAh would mean a charging efficiency of around ~60%. Nothing is ever 100%. I think 70% is the norm, which would translate to 4620mAh charged. Maybe you'll reach this after a few cycles, but I wouldn't expect any more.
I wonder if charging via 0.6A vs 2.0A would be more efficient.

        • got an 81% charge under similar circumstances with the <=25% light blinking in the morning. So 4017 mAh minimum, ignoring that it was turned on the whole night.

  • well, OEM looks like this one

can't figure out how to crack the thing open to test its claimed capabilities

Its a bit different, but the general design is the same. It actually looks to be fairly well built consider the price, just a slight tweak if you squeeze it. The white one also looks a lot better than the black.

It took about 2.5 hours worth of charging from a 1A supply to reach full from the 3 LED out of box level.

I have a HTC Velocity with a 1700mAh battery which gets fairly flat by the end of the day, so I will use the pack to charge the phone over the next 3 nights, and see how it performs.

      • +1

Did the first charge overnight, the powerbank seems to have an autoshut off feature when the phone is charged. 3 LEDs left after the from charging the Velocity from 8% to 100%

        • According to the instructions it does have an auto shut off when the linked device is full

  • Thanks to WantToPayLess :)

and also The Reject Shop :)
