  • Would this be an OK camera if I were looking to get into some photography?

      Here's a review from a reliable website: http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/olympus_sz_14_review/…

It's in the compact travel super-zoom range of cameras.

In other words cameras aimed at travelers who want a decent zoom but with the convenience, ease of use and relative small size of a compact camera in comparison to a digital SLR.

So really depends what you really mean about getting into some photography and how much you want to spend.

If it means you just want to start taking more photos then possibly, and if you find you end up leaving it in the draw and only pulling it out on special occasions or holidays then you haven't over invested and still have an ok camera.

Also if you fall in love with photography after playing around with this one and upgrade to a DSLR you haven't wasted too much on a compact style camera.

I recently recently got the Panasonic TZ40 because I wanted something I could quickly and easily whip out and take a photo without too much fussing about. Also I have got too many friends who think they are now photography experts since they got a DSLR… but they are all try-hard wannabes!

      • I have a Panasonic TZ30. It is a great camera but it's double the price of this camera.

        • Which makes it really hard to judge sometimes!

Panasonic is rather clever in that it made sure there wasn't much TZ30 stock left in the market place before it bought in the TZ40 so that it's not competing with itself and hence can keep the range price higher.

Olympus has both the last years SZ-14 and this years SZ-16 in the market place. So the cheaper price might just be reflection of this older model status!

        • Yes and also because Panasonic Compact Mega Zoom cameras are a lot more popular than the Olympus. IMO, the TZ series are the best in its class.
