If you guys still got your $50 gift cards from WD when they had the WDTV promo last Christmas. Now is a good time to use it. Take this sucker down to $98 :)

    • +30

Or if you buy this with 3 x $50 notes you get $2 cashback.

      • +6

Or even better, if you pay with 2 x $100 notes you will get $50 note and $2 coin cashback!

      • +21

Use your credit card and get it for free.

      • +9

Or use "5 finger discount", you get it free without a credit card. AND, you might even get free meals and accommodation…

        • +9

Don't forget the free bracelets and chauffeur ride with security package.

    • +7

99.9% of people have already used them. You don't need to use the $50 Eftpos card on another WD product.

      • +1

Cannot forget to mention we got the card January. It needed to be activated within 2 months and then the card had a 6 month expiry. All cards should be expired by now. Well that was my understanding of the included documentation.

    • +1

They refused me one saying the receipt provided wasn't clear
Sent them so many emails never replied back
Waste of time for me that Wd promo

  • These still require AC power input right?

    • +8

      Keyword portable = no ac.

    • It's USB powered, a "portable" hard drive rather than "desktop".

    • For some reason I thought the "mypassport" series was USB so assumed this was AC. Great then, might go and pick up one tomorrow.

      • +2

WD do make a desktop version of the Elements drives.
However, this one is portable and not to be confused with the desktop one.

      There will always be one…………….

  • How do the WD Elements Portable drives compare to the HGST Touro Mobile drives?

    • +1

Not sure how it compares, but i bought WD one a few months ago. I transferred a lot of stuff onto it, but when i tried to access it the next day, my laptop didn't recognize the drive. tried to format and do over several times. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. So just got a refund.

Sorry my bad. The one i bought was WD passport.

    • The 1TB turos I bought a few months back had native SATA drives inside. I'm not sure about these WD drives, but previous experience would suggest these are more likely to be native USB. This only matters if you want to use it as an internal drive.

      • I bought a WD elements 1.5TB for $165 a few week ago on centrecom sale, the connector is soldered over the top of the sata port so can't remove it for external use. I connected it to my PC and tried to copy/paste all the files from my 1TB HGST drive and it came up as I/O error. Seems if you transfer at a sustained rate for 15-30min on this drive it will drop out and not work until you leave it for 5-10 min before using again. I thought it might've just been the USB3 but I tried on USB2 and same thing happened so you might need to buy one of those USB cables that splits into 2 to give it some extra power.

    • My 1TB HGST drive can be removed from case (although the way they designed it, it destroys the case clips so you will need to tape it back together, unfortunate since the case looks so nice) and seems more reliable than the WD Elements 1.5TB I have, I tried to copy/paste the files from the HGST and got I/O error =/

  • I'm not sure what the differences are between the Elements and the Passport editions of the 2TB WD portable drives. Amazon is selling Passport 2TB for $114 USD (~$130 AUD). The Passport is also USB 3.0. Also supports hardware encryption.

Link if anyone is interested: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005HMKKH4/

Passport 2TB is $168 in Officeworks.

    • The Passport drive comes with additional software to search, sync and encrypt.

    • $114 USD (including shipping will be ~ $146)- it is a good deal, i think

$149 at Bing Lee on line with free delivery.

    • Still cheaper with office works as it is free delivery

      • $149 at Bing Lee on line with free delivery

So I'm pretty sure both have free delivery…

        $1 is $1! :P

Actually its 5% price beat through OW, no?

        • price is already beaten at OW

  • is this a 3.5" or 2.5"?

    • +4

Dude, your links are showing 3.5" not 2.5" so not the same product. I knew something like this is going to come up every time when there is a "PORTABLE" HDD deal is on.

      • -6

        fair cop
For the uninitiated, what is the difference and what would it mean in real life?

Ah, OK its a SIZE thing
        http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/enterprise-storage-sas-h…

Not that it matters if its desktop storage

        • +3

3.5" drives will require external power. even for desktop storage that can be a hassle

        • +4

Main difference is external AC power is not required for portable drives.

        • Means you cannot fit it in your pocket and that anywhere you want to use it you will need to connect it to external power point as well as lug around a power brick too.

  • i bought it for $141.45 from officework last month. MLN was selling it for $149.00. Let me know if anyone need receipt.

    • can you share the receipt

    • Would they still give you a price match if they're selling it lower than MLN by $1?

  • Has anyone used a portable drive on a TV as media storage.
Parents are caravanning around OZ so I'm going to whack a few hundred movies & TV shows ona drive for them.
They bought a TV that has USB input but I'm not sure if it will have sufficient power to run a "portable" drive as I realise they are meant to use USB sticks.

    • I have! My parents watch tv shows off our portable drive all the time on our Sony Bravia TV (sorry, I don't have the model number on me). But for quick reference, our hard drive is a Samsung 1TB HDD, and it works fine - it just times out after inactivity (around 15-20 minutes).

    • Yes, got heaps of Wiggles and kids movies for my son on a 750 Gig. WD My Passport, which is plugged into our 55" Sony Bravia.

Just have to ensure that the TV can play the types of movies you're trying to play.

  • Kinda amazed this has +65 votes now, when then exact same product was available at JB Hi-Fi for $149 over a month ago, and that deal only received +6 votes: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/111236

Just goes to show how inconsistent OzBargain can be sometimes… :)

    • +2

Yes, according to my observation, the timing of posting a deal is crucial. As soon as it reaches enough + votes to hit the first page, the number of + votes will increase dramatically. The more the + votes the more people will trigger the impulsive purchases due to peer pressure. That's the whole point of the Ozbargain. You sometimes end up spend more money than you initially intend to :)

    • +3

Well spotted, this really highlights how some deals slip through Ozbargain.
Sometimes the front page deals has a lot of expired deals when it could be giving exposure to more that haven't.

  • Nice

  • thanks. Got one. Timely post for me. I was just thinking of getting a new one to put some movies on to play with my media player.

  • Thanks OP.
Ordered one on line 2 days ago & it arrived today.
    Free postage too.

  • Friend got one. Currently using on 360 console.

  • Does anyone know if this can be removed from the enclosure to be used in Sata or USB only built in?
