  • For the Telstra Frontier, Dick Smith throws in a free $30 Telstra recharge (when I got it). So that would still be a bit cheaper.

    • But locked to Telstra?

      • +1

as opposed to this deal being locked to optus?

        • It was mentioned in the previous posting http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/105758 that this phone comes already unlocked. That will be a bonus if that's the case.

        • hopefully! didnt see that other post

        • +1

          Tested, this F5 is unlocked.

        • Thanks for reporting back.

    • Link pls?
Had a look at DSE website, Telstra frontier 4" with 4gb internal memory only. This LG is 4.3" with 8gb internal memory so would prefer this if the same price. Btw, Telstra Frontier @ DSE is $149 or $179 with bonus $30 Telstra credit so not sure how did you get the bonus $30 Telstra credit for free.

      • Ah they changed it. It was $149 with the bonus $30 recharge on website last week when I bought one :P
$179 doesn't make sense now. You can just buy a recharge separately for that.

Deal is good, ok phone as a backup phone. Never done a prepaid before, how does that work? If I dont like the phone later and say want to sell it. The person who bought the phone did something dodgy, because when I buy it I need to provide driver license. Would it come back to me?

    • +2

You are providing ID for the SIM card, which you wouldn't sell with the phone. It would be the same as selling any other phone. Not something to worry about.

      • +1

Thanks. I am currently with TPG, as TPG is using Optus Line, does that mean I can use this phone with my own simcard without unlocking it first? As it appears it is locked to Optus network.

        • +3

Yes it will work. I did a search to be sure:

          TPG FAQs:
Optus: If you are with Optus, there is no need to unlock your phone.

        • Cool. Getting one as a backup phone for sure now:)

        • also works with Amaysim on Optus network

    • +5

i have never BOUGHT a backup phone. if i upgrade to a BETTER phone, i use the retired one as a backup phone.

  • +1

Noob question, does the 4G work on other network providers?

    • Yes :)

      • After unlocking the phone, of course.

    • If the phone supports the 4g bands, I haven't checked this phone

  • -5

It is Locked to optus but which is a shame

  • +2

Good deal for those looking for a budget phone. I just can't believe anyone would make a phone like this without a flash though!

    • usually you just call them and they will unlock as they know alot of people like to go overseas and takes phone

      • -2

Well, or you can just install cyanogenmod, but thats illegal.

Edit: My mistake this phone is not supported by cyanogenmod yet

        • +4

you can just install cyanogenmod, but thats illegal.

          you sure its illegal?

        • +1

How's that illegal? It's my phone and I should be able to do whatever I want to with it.

        • +1

Voids warranty may be misinterpreted as illegal in some states…

        • Well, unlocking the phone without the carrier permission is illegal, be it any means…..

  • Can this be bought from an Optus retailer for the same price? Also since Amaysim is an Optus reseller would their sim work? I've been looking for a cheap 4g android phone after buying the htc 8x and disliking Windows. Was going to buy this for $299 but it had no flash. I'll bite at $150 though. Cheers

    • +2

Amaysim won't guarantee that Optus locked phones will work if you ask them, but everyone I read that has tried it has said they had no problems.

    • Retailers were still selling at $299 yesterday and today. I believe it is online only.

    • Also note, Amaysim and most (all?) Optus resellers do not have access to their 4G network, and only access the 3G network AFAIK.

      • Yes but phone will still work on 3g network.
I use a Note 2 LTE 4g and works fine and Im with Amaysim

        • Yes, I understand it will work fine on the 3G network (provided the network matches one of the modems frequencies, i.e. 900/2100mhz), but my point is: the post I replied to said he was looking for a cheap 4G Android phone, but also suggested he wanted to use it on Amaysim… which defeats the purpose of getting a 4G phone, if you don't have access to a 4G network.

        • In all fairness Davo I was going to switch over within a month or more.

  • Why does it say $299 on the main page? https://www.optus.com.au/shop/prepaidmobile

  • The credit card you used has already been used multiple times today, please try again in 24 hours time.

    Anybody getting the message above?

    • Yes. That's why I queried the price.

      • Oh, so I am not the only one. Anybody is able to get this item at $149 price?

        • Tried another credit card, still the same message. I think this item may have already been sold out.

        • Got the same message.

      • -2

        I can't believe ppl like u exist

    • I'm getting this message too.

    • me too :(

  • Can you buy it at an Optus store for $149 or is it online only?

    • Online only

  • Would this make a good upgrade from a HTC desire? It looks like a nice price for a decent phone but i don't know much about phones.

    thanks

    • Yes

  • Still got the same message……annoying!

    • +1

Why don't you trust me and wait until the sunrise?

      • What time sunrises in WA? Maybe you should put that in the description:)

      • Are you a rep?

  • Apparently these are easy enough to unlock with a $10 code, but there's not much point unlocking for Telstra network as 850MHz 3G is not supported. I would have considered this for a travel phone otherwise.

    • $3 on ebay ;)

      • How do you unlock the phone for $3 or $10?

    • Just phone optus and they will unlock in a few mins. They know alot pof people travel and use a sim card overseas.

  • Does not support the 850 mhz frequency FYI (telstra and vodafone) - means you'd be limited to the 2100 band only

  • Due to technical reasons payment cannot be processed. Is this Ozbargain protection?

    • Mine went through this morning on second attempt.

  • Just ordered one.s eems to be working now. thanks op

  • I ordred one and it went through. Seems order online working now

  • how many per household

    • One per person in the household.

      • what about 2 different ppl in same household??

        • -1

Are you talking about 1 person with a split personality or 2 separate people? The latter qualifies, former doesnt.

  • Good news! Your order was successful and your order number is $$$$$$$$$
Thanks for shopping with us and welcome to Optus

  • Got one for missus, seems like worth $149.

  • Thanks op, Bought two

  • my dad has this one, very nice but like other LG phone it seems don't have official system update

Great phone to take to Thailand for the DTAC network (2100 band).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UMTS_networks#Asia

I don't want to take my Note2 to Thailand because it's way too chunky, but this will do fine. Thanks OP.

I'm assuming I need to unlock it to whack a DTAC sim in?

    • I used DTAC when I was there last. I think I paid roughly 20 bucks for 1.5 or 2gig with a bit of phone calls. Never finished using it. Plus you get the WIFI login in the shopping malls

  • Amazing price, although the camera area is a let down a little bit (5 MP with no flash).

  • How much worse is this than the nexus 4?

    • I received my Nexus 4 yesterday, great phone but no 4G. If you are after 4G this is the cheapest option.

  • Bought as a spare phone, Thanks

  • Locked to Optus means Vaya/Live Connected are ok, yes?

Does this phone has micro SD card option? Camera : No flash, Not sure why LG makes low end phone :( :( . Not worth to spend $150.00….

    • +1

So instead of complaining why don't you find and post up a better phone for a similar price?

    • "Internal/External Memory
      8GB + Up to 32GB (via MicroSD)"

    • Did you read the review on this phone before Making comments!!!
For 150$ this phone is super bargain and i used this phone its lag free and fast dual core 1.2 snapdragon processor and 4g

  • seems like 149 is sold out? pic of the phone is washed out and there no " Buy now" button thats meant to be there.

  • Price match at OW?

    • I went to OW but no stocks for my local store, it's limited stock levels..

  • Hmm its wierd really the no flash must have been done to stop sales poaching of high end LG phones.

I wouldn't miss the flash for photos, but for those torchlight apps. Worst case - For suck to be stuck out in the bush, see a plane fly over head then turn on your phone to find out theres no LED flash.

In some ways its cool that you get a high end ish type phone for $149 with a decent spec though. Instead of just dropping spec all round, they just removed flash.

    • But hang on I guess if your phone still works you can call 000, hypothesis broken.

      • The LED would be very useful, especially if you are in an area where there is no reception and it's dark (camping, travel, inside dense/metal buildings)

If this had an LED I would have ordered it this morning I think

  • Out of stock

  • Cheers OP, picked up one for the mrs.

  • Glad it is out of stock. The more I read the more I feel like buying one even I already have a gs2 backup phone.

  • Got one. Hopefully Virgin SIM works in it

Anyone take a screen dump when it was in stock? Thinking of trying a pmatch at dicks

  • For those left it in your cart, you can still checkout even it's already been out of stock.

  • Has anyone got an invoice to price match at Officework plz. Appreciated

  • It just let me add one to the cart! Very odd especially when the Optus site now lists it as $299 again. So tempted to get it for $149 as a backup phone. Damn you Ozbargain :P

  • ordered one just then, still in stock? possibly the ones from carts for those who didnt check out
