Skittles 200g $1.94 @ Woolworths until 17/9/2013

490

[Edit: Just informed by user surething that these are now made in china. After trying some myself and giving them to someone else in a blind test, the flavor and texture has well and truly changed. They're softer, and taste cheaper, so don't go buying 100 before you taste them.]

Following on from a week of cheap m&ms at coles, woolies now has skittles 200g on special, was $4.18 now $1.94
Tasting the rainbow is now a little cheaper.

    • Can I neg if I didn't see it? Sydney was stupidly hot for early Spring yesterday :(

  • Don't buy with tea.

isnt the red colouring made from beetle shells? MURDERER!

      • You kidding?

        • It used to be, until they went for the vegetarian market and changed the red colouring from a naturally occurring pigment in beetle shells to a chemical colouring.

there is a pretty cool video about these beetles and how they harvest them, dry them, and crush them up to make the additive which is for "natural red colouring"

this isnt it, but explains the process

        • further; E120 is the code for the beetle colouring.
if someone wants to check their skittles bag ingredients list, that will tell you if they still use it.

        • what the hell, no way
          i never knew

        • That was great.

The alternative to using a red colouring that comes from beetles, is a petroleum byproduct. So now I know from this thread that skittles contains colouring made from petrol and are ~12% transfat.

Would still devour a whole pack right about now.

        • OH. MY.

This is actually really cool. :)

According to their ingredient list they now use

        GLAZING AGENT (903)

        which is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnauba_wax

also called Brazil wax and palm wax, is a wax of the leaves of the palm Copernicia prunifera

EDIT: Oh wait you're talking about the colouring

    • and just to be a bastard to vegans, show your friend this list
      http://www.veggieglobal.com/nutrition/non-vegetarian-food-ad…
and watch as they cut out nearly every processed food in their current diet.

  • thanks OP. I love skittles, time to stock up.

  • good deal, great taste - just a pity they are filled with trans fats. :(

    • You monster. I had no idea. Then I googled it and found the ingredients.

"3. Hydrogenated palm kernel oil: (Trans fat) Polyunsaturated vegetable oil that has been partially converted to saturated oil in order to create a solid or semi-solid substance. Use is banned in restaurants across the USA."

Contains an ingredient that is banned across all restaurants in the USA?!

Ah wel, they are still delicious.

      • Many take away places here use it.

    • Skittles have 4% fat, hardly qualifies for "being filled with trans fats". Ever looked at your instant noodles pack for how much fat they have? The deep fry their noodles in it.

  • i just bought a pack

    Taste the rainbow
    Maybe NSFW.

  • OMG OMG OMG THEY NEVER GO ON SPECIAL!!! THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!

  • Amazing price but as a huge skittles fan am disappointed with the latest change… occurring early this year.
    - blackcurrant was replaced with grape
    - Now made in China instead of locally.

They are nothing like they used to be but still a decent lollie.

    Enjoy!

The Wild Berry flavor in the purple packaging is made in the US. The standard flavor in the red packaging is made in China. I prefer the Wild Berry.
