It's all rumours, they never intended to sell cheap phone.

*We never had an objective to sell a low-cost phone, Our primary objective is to sell a great phone and provide a great experience, and we figured out a way to do it at a lower cost. - Tim Cook *

        • +4

I would agree if the hardware was identical between the 5s and 5c with only the metal case differences. But the 5c is identical to the previous model, 12 months old then its not "cheaper" by any means. Other competitors will drop their price by 33% after 12 months in order to be competitive.

Funny how they have "invented" a new way to sell their iPhones with Plastic when they have been giving their competitors Cr@p over the years on their use of Plastic (eg. LG, Samsung, Sony etc). Again goes to show how hypocritical Apple is.

Er…have you forgotten that the 2008 iPhone 3G and 2009 3GS had plastic backs, as does the 2012 5th gen iPod Touch? Don't get indignant over Apple because of made-up stories.

iHate iPhone. The Same old iCrap, with Different iColors and iSize.
Same with iOS7, same OLD iOS with different iColors and significantly iSmall improvements which most fo which is already present with Android.

    • +5

I don't understand why you hate apple, you think it's crap and android is better, just stay away from it, what apple have done to you?

      • +5

You can Neg my post, I don't hate apple, they have revolutionize the market.
What I hate is, only with tiny changes to a device and asking hefty price is a rip off.. And people still line up to see something which ain't much different from existing product

        • +10

Cool, don't buy it… Better yet, go about your day and don't even think about it.

But seriously, this is $40 cheaper than Apple ($739)… I would buy local for the support in this case, You're already spending $700 anyway.

        • The you would appreciate this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpH4hrV38J0

        • +5

          Yeah… what's another $40
Not like you can get another smartphone for it or anything— oh wait…

        • Cool, don't buy it… Better yet, go about your day and don't even think about it.

That'd be too hard. Non-iDevice owners need to constantly reassure themselves the reason they don't one is because it's <insert criticism>, hence the trolling. Quite sad, really.

You are not the only smart guy in the world, people choose to buy iPhone not because they are too stupid to see the shortcomings, they may like the style or the UI or they just like the brand, so what? They like to pay the price for those, what's wrong?

BTW, the 5s upgrade isn't tiny change at all, the new A7 CPU is a true beast.

        • Ok, I'm an android guy, previously IOS, and want to say that your comment completely disproves your point.

          Hope you notice that.

    • +3

Thats your opinion with Apple. I am fine with Apple. I really like using my iPhone with iOS 7. I don't need most of the gimmicky features on Android; most of them are useless. If you don't like Apple, fine, stay away from it.

      • -4

Because fingerprint scanning is not gimmicky at all…
        Give me a break <insert eyeroll>

    • +11

I get it. You put an 'i' in front of words to make fun of a consumer product which isn't suited to your budget or preferences!

The 5C doesn't have touch ID as listed in the description, that's a feature on the 5S.

    • oh dear another case of false advertising… so basically that means its a iPhone 5 in technicolor .. :P

    • Technically it was listed as a feature of iOS, I have clarified.

      • So remove it from this post. It's irrelevant to this deal.

      • +1

Just thought it was worth pointing out, not everyone follows tech news and they may have heard that the new iPhone features a fingerprint scanner called 'touch ID'. Given that the 5c is technically a new iPhone it needed to be pointed out.

      • +1

just get both… isn't that the Apple spirit?

    pricing error

  • given Kogan's price is not really that big a discount, why dont we stop buying from Kogan for a while. Serves them right for koganning all of us with the S4

    • yes that should count as 1 strike.

2 strikes and you're out Kogan

      • Well, kogan is not always the cheapest.. there are other suppliers too..

  • +1

    wow. that price.

  • +2

I dont understand how this is a bargain when you can get an iphone 5 for cheaper. This phone made out of plastic is some how even heavier than the iphone 5.

    http://www.kogan.com/au/buy/apple-iphone-5-16gb-black-networ…

      • +12

The 5S has a fingerprint scanner, 64-bit processor and a better camera sensor front and back.

The 5C is basically the iPhone 5 in a plastic shell so that it can be manufactured cheaper while selling units because of it's new look and price point.

To reiterate, the 5C does not have a fingerprint scanner, does not have a 64-bit processor. It does have a better front facing camera than the 5 and more LTE bands.

      • 5c has fingerprint scanner, 64-bit processor and a better camera

Definately doesn't have the fingerprint scanner or a 64 bbit processor. Not sure about the camera.

My feelings towards Apple is full of love and hate.

I hate Steve Jobs (I hate the bastard) but I love his ideas.
I hate Apple's attitude but I love their products.
I love the user experience via Apple ecosystem but I hate the stupid restrictions and blatant cashgrabs.
I love IOS apps but I hate iTunes

as for this deal, there isn't enough new stuff in the 5C to make the upgrade worthwhile.
(Apple even use cheaper materials on these phones - these bastards are cutting corners.)

and before you ask: I have iphone and android phone, ipad and android tablets, Mac and PC computers

  • +8

I do not think this is a bargain. Only $40 less than local AU price. A local warranty of up to two years, and out of warranty support (a replacement phone at a reduced price), is worth far more than $40.

    • -3

So its not a bargain coz its only $40 cheaper.. ok

      • Not sure why that's hard to understand. If he believes the extra warranty and out of warranty support is worth more than $40, then getting it $40 cheaper without that stuff isn't a bargain.

I was expecting the neg votes here to just be Kogan bashing, but A3Australia's reasoning is quite valid.

      • +2

So its not a bargain coz its only $40 cheaper.. ok

You do not appear to have read my comment.

    • +2

fair enough..lol.. just appeared in my email :)

never bought anything from them yet……..so i go according to price drop on day one released.

Unlike Samsung, day one, already drop by at least $50. Apple goods rarely or maybe only 20-30 dollars.

      • I seem to have accidentally negged the deal itself and am unable to to undo that. Sorry :S

    • +1

Agree - not worth the $40 price drop to switch to a 'kogan' warranty.
I have returned 2 phones under warranty this year, one to Kogan (nokia 820) and another to an Apple store (iphone5).

Both went smoothly enough, but with Kogan the whole process took nearly 2 weeks (reporting the problem, awaiting return labels etc etc.)In the end I got a store credit.
The iphone 5 - I walked into the store and had an apple rep replace it within 10 mins.

    • mate. Apple warranty doesnot get void if your phone is not Aus stock. You can still get it replaced from apple…

      • mate. Apple warranty doesnot get void if your phone is not Aus stock. You can still get it replaced from apple…

Mate, mate, check your claim before making such a statement. Do you really want to wait while it is sent back there? Or to have a perhaps 'dodgy' repair done in Australia by some unauthorised repair shop?

Yes, the phone would still be covered by Apple in the market from which it came - perhaps Hong Kong, perhaps not.

However, iPhones from Hong Kong (and who knows where with Kogan) are not covered by Apple Australia's warranty, nor can they make use of Apple Australia's 'out of warranty' replacement scheme.

    • +1

assuming this is a grey import, very valid point.

  • +1

You can get a new Nexus 4 for $300 now from Playstore.

Not the same phone, cant really compare, just saying…

    • +2

maybe we can sticky tape two of them together .. double the features! and save $99 hehe

    • +2

      just saying…

That you could buy a lot of coloured cases for $400? Or Chocolate?

  • +2

    'Bargain' ?

  • +3

    $699 ???? Really?

  • +1

deal is real, cuz in hongkong you can easily get the rubber 5 C for around $600. However, from Kogan, no deal. Just don't want to be koganed.

  • +1

If only Kogan had Beats by Dre on sale at the moment and this post could be the trifecta of OzBargain vitriol: apple + beats + kogan.

Oh well, I'll settle for the double. I look forward to reading the comments.

  • -1

This is not a bargain, it's only $99 in the US! How can Apple do this to Aussies when the exchange rate is almost the same?

    • +2

Must be a conspiracy. Lol :D

    • +2

      If it's sarcasm, I'm not getting it…

It's $99 + an expensive 24 month plan (which gives you less included benefits than what you get here).

      • Hehe. The amount of people that fall for it is quite amusing. It doesn't help when aussie FTA tv reports also state it is $99 in the US (with no mention of a contract).

What I don't understand is why anyone would go for a 5C in the US when a 5S is only $100 more….

        • +3

What I don't understand is why anyone would go for a 5C in the US when a 5S is only $100 more….

This is exactly why the 5C even exists. It makes the 5S look like a good deal.

        • +2

What gets me is when we start saying two iphone models are 'only' $100 different in price…
I think the last 3 phones I owned cost <200 and i finally sprung and bought myself the expensive google flagship phone for ~$350 when it came out.
It's a phone… what does it do that makes it worth the better part of $1000?
Most laptops cost this much, you can buy a 50+ inch HD television for this much…

        • -1

some people need a nice phone to match their suit, handbag etc, you can't bring your HDTV around……. but i am still using iPhone 4, probably because i don't have a nice suite ^_^

    • +2

Hey I can get it for $0 in Australia on a hefty 24 month contract too..

  • +3

why do ppl get so offended when i spend my own money to buy what's best for me?

    • +3

Because they need to make themselves feel better by justifying their choice and their (apparent) superiority. It's kinda sad when you think about it.
