  • Full he? Or 4K?

      Info found on Google:
The Apple TV 4th Gen (Apple TV HD) is powered by a dual core Apple A8 processor, has 2 GB of RAM, and is offered with either 32 GB or 64 GB of internal flash memory storage (64 GB option discontinued September 12, 2017). It is capable of supporting 1080p video, but not 4K video.

    • This would pair good with an old TV. The latest 4K has a lot more power, it has to be the most powerful device in its class. When the 4th gen starts giving you headaches the latest 4K will still be going strong. But this is pretty cheap, if you have more than one TV it's worth having more than one Apple TV. You can always get whatever the newest version is later.

oh thanks for clearing my confusion, I was also wondering this about 3rd, 4th gen thing.

  • Hope you snapped 'em up!

    $69! Nice.

    nice for a 1080p box

  • it should be ozbargained tomorrow, hard to get it.

  • Fantastic deal at that price, also works as a cheaper way to get a spare remote if you like the look of that generation.

  • How many they have?

No hate here, but this tech is almost 9 years old and was discontinued 2 years ago. The operating system is still fully supported by Apple but likely to move to partial support when the next version comes out.

Meh, I've owned Apple TVs since the original and they honestly don't get old… This is much better than a Google or Amazon alternative at the same price point. Good piece of tech for the price regardless of how old the tech is.

Explain to me how this is much better than google and Amazon alternatives when their 4K units are constantly cheaper than this.

I have both the Amazon Fire 4K and Apple TV 4K gen 1 and I much prefer the Fire Stick which is a more integrated device, USB powered via the rear of your TV, it's small and hides behind the TV in the HDMI port and has a slick OS and it is far cheaper, making it a great option to buy one for each TV in your home.
Each to their own, but for me, I think Apple TV looks a little dated now (OS wise), so I tend to only switch it on occasionally.

    • I have to say, lots of my friends wanted to upgrade their TV because their Smart Google TV is really laggy. When I told them instead of buying a new $1,000 TV you can buy a new Apple TV for $200 and they were all shocked at how great this made their TV. I think this $69 one that is 9 years old would definitely still be an upgrade for a lot of people.

  • This is still my daily driver on a 1080p TV in a holiday home. I would prefer this every day over a Chromecast with Google TV (no opinion on the Fire TV) unless you needed it powered by USB (like the Chromecast in my caravan) while the Apple was at the same or lower price as it is here. Apple TV has had insanely long support times, for me it’s just a shame it’s never 5V or 12V powered.

    • Inverter for the van?

These things sip power so even with an inverter you should be ok. I have a spare in the cupboard and it’s going in our motorhome in the very near future.

      • I think your inverter will chew up more power to keep running than the actual Apple TV…

I had a WDTV then a popcornhour a500 (the vten had a 5v PS) in the caravan. Both had usb inputs. (Sigh). Still have the a500 at the weekender - swapping between the ATV and the PCH is like going back to a DOS interface

      • The last WDTV wasn't bad - still have one in a drawer somewhere with an unused remote!. I did love my PCH but it was super clunky.

It can actually be done - no idea of cost though.

  • Good buy if you have a 1080p TV. Only upgraded from mine last year when we upgraded our TV. The older model still ran fine, both in terms of being responsive but also supporting any streaming apps we needed to access. Also up to date in terms of OS for now too.

I still have the og silver white Apple TV with component out

  • Nice

  • What is tvOS on this device? Can I install TrollStore on it?

    • Latest tvOS.
No idea what that app is.

Heard that netflix "household sharing" is a non-issue with appletv so this could be a good, cheap option.

    • is that still the case? Might pop by and buy an actual Apple TV 4k if that is true

      • +1

Apparently. A friend said it works with their AppleTV but not with an android based player (Shield I think).

        • cool, I have a Shield. Might have to get an Apple TV cheaply to see if we can skip around that issue. Also have a Macbook Air and ipad so might be worth getting anyway

I understand they are not the same, but I recently bought a 3rd Gen second hand to pop in the bedroom, and it’s fairly poor in terms of what it still supports.

Old OS with YouTube, iView and SBS removed at this point, though Netflix, Prime and Stan are still there. A sign of things to come in the not too distant future for this device.

    • Are you saying that you don’t have the YouTube, iView and SBS apps anymore on your 3rd Gen ATV?

That’s weird, I have the 4K ATV and two 3rd Gen ATV’s and they all still have those Apps. Even my jailbroken ATV (2nd Gen) supports YouTube, iView and SBS.

      • Yep, they're not there for me.

Plenty of info out there about apps not being supported anymore and removed, although some people are lucky with retaining them.

        Apple, The Verge, Reddit

You can hope it won't happen to this 4th Gen device soon, but it is almost a decade old, and the next line. Saving grace may be the newer OS and app store support, and that it was still officially available until a couple of years ago.

        • Thanks for the articles. That’s so bizarre, I wonder why my apps are still there.

I do have a Chromecast as well, but I don’t use it as it doesn’t have a dedicated remote. I guess that will have to be my fallback should the apps disappear or stop working.

UPDATE: My bad, I must have a newer version of the Apple TV as mine has the black remote. I see that this issue only impacts ATV’s with the old silver remote. Can you still jailbreak the old ATV? My old jailbroken ATV (2nd Gen) can still play YouTube. I haven’t updated the software since it was jailbroken years ago as it sits with an old TV which we only use when exercising and use it primarily as a streaming device for show on my server.

  • $69 for a new genuine remote seems nice

  • I found one in a box over the weekend, plugged it in an updated to the latest OS (which took it's sweet time) and it's surprisingly snappy for such an old device. For an older 1080 TV it would be excellent, especially at that price.

  • Anyone tried the Hubl?
Does this ATV have free to air TV also?

    • When my aerial died I purchased the TV Launcher app (for $8) which effectively front ends the FTA streaming services

  • has anyone seen any discounted in Melb?
