2TB hard driver is not available in many stores from the time this deal was posted. However 500GB hard drive is available but in my opinion it is not that much value for money.

    • +2

2TB one is pretty good with USB 3.0. IT's available in all store in Brisbane though.

I don't really need one at the moment. I will pass..

  • Ordered one of each - Thanks Rainbowyen

Thanks, needed a USB2.0 drive for a customer. So hard to find now, everything is USB3.0.

    • Usb 3 is backward compatible…
Only reason you'd want to use usb 2 instead is if your on a computer without admin access and the admin is stupid enough to not install usb3 drivers…

      • -3

If it is backward compatible, why do you need usb3 drivers?

        • same reason your system needed usb2 drivers i would assume….. so the software knows how to talk to the hardware

        • -2

Mod: Removed personal attack "if its backwards compatible" the usb2 hardware and drivers will work just fine. Same as a usb2 drive.

        • +1

Mod: Removed Personal attack. windows comes with usb drivers built in since win95 osr2'ish iirc but they all still have usb drivers….

    • +2

I feel bad for your customer if you were not joking

      • sadly there was plenty of "experts" in the IT field 15-20 years ago just like this, charging far less per hour caus they never actually fixed anything properly ensuring many return visits and lots of profits…..

bring back the good 'ol days where you had to learn about parking harddrive heads etc before you could even safely turn a pc on and off..

        • -1

          Mod: Removed personal attack

          Listen very carefully.

THE CABLE IS DIFFERENT FROM USB2.0 to USB3.0!

If a customer uses multiple backup drives, one per day, and one cable only due to inaccessibility of USB ports. One drive failing means either swap the cable twice a week, or buy a USB2.0 drive as a replacement.

        • -1

If it was me I'd be buying two usb3 drives. My time is more important.

        • Fine for you, but won't help my client one bit.

          7 drives required.

          Transfer speed increase is N/A.

This is all getting very off-topic. Just wanted to thank the OP for posting the deal because it really helped me out - not just the price.

        • -1

If your client can afford 7 drives then he can afford a usb hub (if the # of usb ports are an issue).

The usb connection on the computer end will be the same anyway so it's a non issue unless they have no front usb ports.

        • -5

The machine is not a pc. Despite what kids on here may think, I do know what I'm doing.

        • +1

Thanks, needed a USB2.0 drive for a customer. So hard to find now, everything is USB3.0.

Your comment implies that USB3 will somehow not work with USB2, which is inaccurate in the majority of cases, so you are misinforming those who are less knowledgeable about these products.

Without further information, one has to assume that it will be connected to a PC for this kind of product. If you have a very specific need for a USB2 drive, do enlighten us as to why rather than getting defensive about it.

How is this USB port inaccessible? I'm curious now.

        • What? I was saying thanks to the OP, especially as I needed a USB2.0 drive. That is all.

My comment says nothing like how you interpret it, but I am not repsonsible for how you or anyone else intepret things. Nor do I much care to be honest.

I only got defensive when people were saying they feel sorry for my customer, who happens to be one of the country's biggest companies in this instance, when clearly the posters know nothing of the situation.

I wasn't informing anyone of anything, or implying that because I need a USB2.0 drive for this one application, anyone else would!

If I thought anyone would be interested in why I needed a USB2.0 drive, I may have explained it at the start. However, I just wanted to say thanks to the OP.

I wouldn't even have commented again if people, who cleary know nothing of the situation, weren't implying I don't know what I am talking about.

If you really are curious as to the exact details, the usb port is on a manufacturing machine, with no external access. The mainboard (which has the only USB port) is inside a locked panel, only accessible by the engineers - who are not the ones who swap the drives. The machine is from the USA, and so uses a step down transformer. A powered USB hub is not an option because of this, and unpowered hubs do not work.

The two options were, buy 7 USB3.0 hdds or find a USB2.0 drive. Before I got chance to get my purchasing manager to try and source one for me, I found this deal.

Pretty dull reason for needing the drive I know, but valid nonetheless :)

        • these are apparently usb3's anyway according to someone below

uvbunny 5 hours 42 min ago
Just got back from the South Rd. Moorabbin store (Melbourne). They're all out of the 2TB drives (still shows as in stock when I check online) but had at least 5 more 500GB seagate portables for $39 after I bought one. The 500GB portables they have are usb 3.0 + 2.0, not 2.0.

        • lolwut?

buying consumer grade product for business backup use?

thank goodness my client has a strict vendors selection process.

lack of drive replacement/dr solution wouldn't even fly in the first place either.

        • You can hardly blame anyone for misinterpreting your comment if you fail to mention you're using a consumer grade portable HDD for backing up a manufacturing machine.

If you really are curious as to the exact details, the usb port is on a manufacturing machine, with no external access. The mainboard (which has the only USB port) is inside a locked panel, only accessible by the engineers - who are not the ones who swap the drives.

I'm just wondering why a USB extension cable wouldn't work.

        • I'm just wondering why a USB extension cable wouldn't work.

same reason the externally powered usb hub wouldnt? the stepdown transformer used for the machine (but id assume not the rest of the power in the building….. but what would i know?)

        • What does that have to do with powering the device though. All else being equal, why would a portable USB2 work where a USB3 wouldn't? An extension cable does nothing more than extend the port further from the machine.

        • +1

ive not idea but thats the excuse reason he gave just above…. :)

        • It is a valid question. It is the same reason the unpowered usb hub doesn't work. I believe the usb port is not performing to spec, but a new "control unit" is 20k or so.

Also, my company did not supply this solution I may add. It originally backed up to SD cards via a card reader plugged into this usb port. The German company that maintains this machine twice a year put in this workaround when the card reader stopped working.

This pretty much shows the major weakness in the ability to downvote posts. All you did was thank the OP because you had a need for a USB 2.0 drive, which is what this deal is for.

Why is everyone else here if they want USB 3.0? Why downvote the one person who needed USB 2.0?

  • Thanks OP. Picked one up.

  • Does this 2TB Hard Drive have its own power on power off button?

Also does it have auto power on off sleep mode etc?

    • You can download software from Seagate web site to change all these settings.

  • +4

Code has changed. Unique code sent to your email once you sign up

    • Thanks. It worked. Bought one.

Thanks OP, fantastic price for a 2TB drive. Going to be the new boot drive on my N40L :D

  • Out of stock on the Gold Coast

Think it's out of stock completely now

  • Will something like this plug into a TV to allow me to watch downloaded videos on it?

    • the tv's i know of only support up to a 1tb drive. mine simply restarts the tv when ever something bigger is plugged in. friends tv's do the same. ive not heard of a tv that is happy with bigger than 1tb but ive not had much experience with others than the ones i know of so take it for what its worth.

so, the 500gb you should be able to, the 2tb not likely… but best bet is to check with the manufacturer?

    • depends on the power it needs. I have 2 identical cheap USB3 cases and a 250gb HDD in each and one works on the TV and one doesnt

  • Can anyone who has the 500gb portable confirm if the USB is soldered onboard?

  • A few 500GB at Marion SA, seems like nowhere else in SA

  • currently in stock at Castle Hill NSW, which is annoying since I was there this morning… and I'm not wanting to go back

    • even if its in stock its still $39, you cant use the $5 voucher can you?

  • Says in stock in a local stock but at checkout it says out if stock and won't go any further

    • Site is getting hammered by OzB hoard so its causing it to be abit glitchy. Logins & promo codes not working on some trys.

      • So instore is the best bet now since the site is gone down the crapper?

        • assuming theres even any in store….. which id begin to doubt now. online is getting backordered now as well by the looks so probably sold out.

  • 500GB one is powered by USB right? Dont require external power source?

  • Online showing out-of-stock for WA. Showing in-stock at city-west, and Malaga.

  • What speed of drive is in the 2TB?

    • +1

      It's a 5400rpm 3.5" green drive.

  • i just got an email saying that my 2nd 2tb (under a different account) one has been backordered. seems my first one went through ok. anyone else get the same?

  • can the case be cracked on the 2tb and used in a NAS?

    • yup

    • Yes but better not because they cannot run 24x7.

      • what do you mean? why cant they run 24/7?

        • Components less resilient, higher chance of failure.

        • I mean not designed to run 24x7, that is why Western Digital have a RED hard disk for NAS.

        • +1

ive had 2 running 24/7 for about 2 years now with no issues…..

sure there are more expensive options for drives but all drives (including the expensive ones) fail (and yes im well aware of what the reds etc are all about)

        • I have customer using three this type of drives on raid 5 and one fail and now replaced with RED.

  • +1

    sold out

    • Just went to the Harvey Norman Apsley and they still had 6-7 left

      • 2.5 or 3.5?

        • 3.5

cracked it open and its only a 5900rpm but still ok for storage in my htpc

  • Waste of time sold out everywhere and delivery.
Frustrating I was trying to find a 320 or 500 for a cheap price.

  • +1

Everton Park brissy, has 6 2TB's left
Shows not in stock online… but is.
Scans for $68, asked for the $5 off, and got it.
Original price on sticker in store shows $169
    Oh, Cheers OP!

  • Out of stock damn. Really needed a 2tb portable. My 2tb failed last night :(

  • I got the 2TB 2.5" Thanks OP

  • +1

2.5" -This product is currently out of stock. Contact us if you need help

    • No stock anywhere in Sydney except Castle Hill for pickup (ring beforehand).

    • no, I picked up the last one @ 16.00 today, had a hard time to get the $5 discount in store.

  • good price :)

  • +2

All gone - both out of stock

  • +2

Missed this deal sadly. Shame as I could have used a 2TB drive.

  • still a lot available in west perth store. call them and ask how you can get it.

  • How long before you get an email that it's ready to be picked up? I placed an order yesterday morning and it's still not ready.

  • 2TB for only $68???

  • +1

Checked Castle Hills today sold out even the site said in stock for the 2TB.

    • 5 x 500Gb at Belrose store (syd) yesterday marked at $99

Will probably match $39 if you point out online price.

  • Order placed on the 19th… until today still no sign of delivery. Pathetic!
Call up HN onine help line lady transferred me to the store thats suppose to ship my order. Now the guy on the phone said the person who does the online order is on phone and will call me back later…. giving me a run around… seems like they are reluctant to send it! da feck?
