$99 Cougar CMX700 V2, 700W 80+ Bronze Modular PSU with Free 14cm Case Fan + Shipping @ PCCG

120

Not sure what the expiry date is as it doesn't mention on the website. But it seems like a good deal for a modular PSU that is 80+ bronze. They are giving away a free 14cm fan which would normally be valued at around $15~$20.

Reasonable review on it: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Cougar-CMX-V2-700-W-P…

850W version is $129 and 1200W is $179.

  • Similar promotion to what mwave had ran previously. The product I received was an undocumented V3 revision.

My comment from a previous post:

Just to follow up, I received the PSU. It is neither the V1 or V2 revision, it is an undocumented V3 version. Box and manual mention V3, website has no information on. It appears to have a slightly different power distribution; 12v1 30A and 12v2 26A @ 670W (55A total over 12V rails), compared to V2 which has 30A on both 12v1 and 12v2 @ 648W (54A total over 12V rails). Only other difference is that it has a sticker saying 'Haswell ready'.

Overall I am very happy with my purchase. Much less coil whine caused by/from GPU now. Also much quieter than outgoing Antec PSU.

  • Looks like a decent deal, thanks for posting

  • i am using Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 650W, should i replace it with this PSU?
    My VGA is Asus 5850 CU2, AMD Phenom II X6 Six Core 1055T 2.8GHz 6MB Cache (AM3).
Have been wondering that should i upgrade my PSU or not.

Please help me with this, thanks, guys.

    • Nope, your current one should be completely sufficient, if you aren't seeing any problems.

      • Thanks, prospective Darkness.

If i want to upgrade my VGA to PowerColor Radeon HD7970 3GB? is my PSU sufficient?

        • No. Would be pushing the limits for the budget PSU. How do I know? I had one of these in the past.

Unless you're seeing issues, there is no reason for upgrading. Having said that, contrary to its name, the Extreme Power range are not very good PSUs and the Cougar would be a very, very good step up over one. Will provide more power, less noise, less ripple, etc.

  • I am using Corsair CX500w v3
    with i5-3470 non k, 8gb ram, Powercolor HD 7970,
it is okay or should I upgrade to this?

If it is running fine, then you're not really needing to upgrade. However, the CX series is equivalent to the Cooler Master Extreme series mentioned above; it is aimed at cheap budget builds/system builders. They are not the best PSUs. I am sometimes surprised to see people skimp on what is probably the most important component in their PC, putting their investment at risk, especially if running high-end GPUs. Although, I understand that not everyone has the budget.

      • Not that I am trying to skimp on PSU. It's just that I upgraded recently my psu from hd7850, that's why :)

Never expecting myself getting a hd 7970 when I build this desktop lol

  • Im thinking about upgrading my comp, but i dont know what im gonna do with the current components? Sell them on ebay? Can u guys give me some advice?
Have been thinking of upgrading since March, but waiting for a sign ^^( what should i do with my Cooler Master Extreme Power Plus 650W and Asus 5850 CU2).

    • Maybe keep PSU as backup or some unforeseen budget build in the future (family/friends), as you're unlikely gonna get much for it. For the 5850, research prices on ebay, should be able to sell it off quite easily.

    • I don't know how much you'll be recycling to your upgraded build, but you could just keep the old one around for a media box / causal living room gaming type thing. I just upgraded, and that's what I plan on doing. IME, it's generally not worth trying to sell old components like that.

For deals like this I like to think of it as a 99$ fan with a free PSU. That way when people ask how much that awesome orange PSU cost you can say "was an ozbargain freebie" and watch their jaws drop ;)

And then watch their jaws dislocate as you tell them the cost of the fan :P

  • Hmm what was the previous price on this? Or is it just being posted because of the free fan?
Also how are the quality on these VS antec and co?

    • PCCG had it priced at ~$130 before promotion, from memory. Previous deal was the same; $99 + fan + shipping. You'd be hard pressed to find a similar semi-modular PSU of this quality around the same price. If you haven't already done so, I'd strongly recommend reading the review provided in the original post.

  • I bought one from the previous mwave deal as well. Very pleased with the psu which solved some power supply issues my previously installed 550w thermaltake had. The fan is also quite good quality and produces a good amount of air-flow with a minimum of noise.

That is correct, particularly with cards manufactured on a 28nm process or lower (i.e. GTX 7xx and Radeon 7xxx and beyond).

GPU's are going to be getting more and more power-efficient and a requiring lower and lower TDP's; the reverse of what we saw up until 2010.

The only single GPU's that'll need more than 600W are 7990's and Titan's due to them being dual-graphics core cards (effectively multi-GPU setups on the one PCB).

Seems like same price for mwave but a bit cheaper shipping?
