    holy cow! thx WNK!

  • I have the student version of AutoCAD.

One thing to note, on all drawings it says produced by student version.

    • +2

It may not be used for commercial or for-profit purposes. Excellent for learning..

    • +1

Save it as a .dxf then open it up on a work computer will a full licence and the water mark will not appear.

  • +5

    It's always been free

    • +13

Yep, that's true. But it's likely not many OzBargainer's knew that.

    • -3

Doesn't make it any less of a deal!

      • +1

        Actually, by definition, it does.

        • -4

Well that's not what the majority seem to think.

What you're telling me is that if, say, Google decided to lower the price of the Nexus 7 to $50 then it wouldn't be a bargain?

Of course it would be, it'd be a bargain on the first day, it'd be a bargain on the second day, it'd be a bargain every day until it is no longer significantly cheaper than it's competition.

As long as it is a bargain, people around here deserve to know about it and hop onto it.

        • What?

If the Google Nexus was always free and one day a few years later someone goes "hey guys check out this free tablet" then I could understand your explanation.

A bargain on an always free product would be getting something else for free with it (as a deal wink wink), or having them pay you to use it.

    • -4

No it hasn't… A friend of mine studied at AIE a couple of years ago and had to pay around $100 a year for a student license of 3D studio Max.

It may have been free for a while now, but it hasn't always been free, so it's nice to know it is now.

      • +2

Your friend very likely paid for an educational license, not a student license. Autodesk sells heavily discounted educational licenses for training facilities including universities, tech colleges, schools, etc. If memory serves correctly, they are around $100.

I was at university over 6 years ago and the student versions of Autodesk software was available for free back then, however educational licenses were not.

    • Actually, Autodesk Australia don't market this at all. It was only during the GFC that Autodesk US started to heavily promote this. I was studying a decade ago and AutoCAD LT cost $299 for students, and 3DSMax and ADTurd cost even more — naturally there were virtually zero students lining to purchase it.
They also now have a lot more LT versions of their premier products, as well as free tablet versions. I imagine this move has been an effective tactic to curb piracy with startups. A lot has changed since then — The retail price of their products has doubled in most cases, but they have many affordable and free options. It is worth publicising it in Oz, since Autodesk Australia (which is basically a retailer only interested in selling $10-15,000 suites and nothing less), can't be arsed to market it themselves.

  • Amazing, thanks so much.

  • Thanks OP!

  • Awesome. Thank you

They were posted 6 months and a year ago respectively, there might be people who need this now but didn't back then, so it's still a really informative post.

      • +2

Whilst I agree, it's still a dupe regardless.

This isn't even a deal and will get moved to the forums soon.

        • +2

This is what happens when you have people who interpret rules (and sometimes laws) in a literal fashion. From my understanding, we don't allow duplicate so that we don't have multiple posts informing users of the same deal, as that would clutter up the site.

E.g. if store X is having a sale tomorrow, we don't need 50 people posting about it here. That's a duplicate. It is uninformative and hence, should not be here.

This, however, was last posted 6 months ago. Since then, there have been many new members who might not have saw the deals 6 months ago and hence, will benefit from this. It isn't cluttering up the site and judging from the amount of positives it is getting, the members seem to appreciate the deal.

Either way, if it's not a deal to you, then you don't have to try and ruin it for other people, just don't jump on board, there are plenty of people, by the looks of things, who have benefited from this post.

        • +1

I've been a student member of Autodesk for the last few years and think everyone should know about it.

It's not about ruining it for others. It's about being consistent, else we would have a deal topic every time someone finds a freebie that has always been free, and the mods clamp down on those, don't see why this one should get special consideration.

  • +2

    Cool.
thanks OP for bring it to my attention.
    +1

  • looks like the version are a few behind current.

    • Max and Maya are current versions. Can't vouch for the others.

      • Yeah in my experience it is always the most current

      • i only looked at revit which I was after, was the 2012 version, so assumed others were similar.

        • You may have been looking at the seperate MEP, Structure and Architecture versions which have all been rolled into one version (as far as I know) which is listed with 2013 and 2014 versions

  • Thanks OP, but a bummer about cant use them for commercial purposes… :(

  • Note that if you import anything created in Student version into a full version the Academic use only watermarks comes across to the whole project. I've seen a few posts on forums warning people to never mix work done in student version with commercial release.

  • -2

It's awesome but has always been free, not a deal and should be moved to the forums.

    • +1

And who says it's not a deal?

      • By definition something that has always been free isn't a deal. It's the same reason the mods delete any 'deal' that links to free apps on iTunes or the Play Store for apps that have always been free.

Either the mods are sleeping on this one, or they are being inconsistent with their own rules.

    • agree
