This is a good model and price.

doesn't ocz have higher failure rates than other manufacturers?

    • Only because they make really butt-low end models, that seems to have tarnished their brand more than make them a profit.

I've been using their Vertex 3 for 1.5yrs, no probems.

    • +6

I had an original Vertex die, and now I've had my two Agility 3 drives die. Never again OCZ

    • +7

Yes, they do, and they fare badly in terms of reliability compared to every other major SSD manufacturer.

Component return rates (for SSDs) for the six months to May 2013 (according to hardware.fr):

      • Samsung 0.05%
      • Plextor 0.16%
      • Intel 0.37%
      • Crucial 1.12%
      • Corsair 1.61%
      • OCZ 6.64%

Component return rates for November 2012:
      http://www.behardware.com/articles/881-7/components-returns-…

      • Intel 0.45%
      • Samsung 0.48%
      • Corsair 1.05%
      • Crucial 1.11%
      • OCZ 5.02%

Not even joking when I say this but between my 2 mates and I we have had 7 OCZ SSDs all die on us within 6 months (including their refurbs). They are terrible SSDs. Avoid at all costs. I'm on a 60GB OCZ that's barely functional and only 6 months old (it's a friends SSD that they didn't need) and it isn't detected half the time.

  • +7

    OCZ is definitely the worst.

  • can get a samsung 120GB EVO for $104

  • OCZ failure rates are no different to other manufacturers that used sandforce chips. This controller on the other hand is proprietary to OCZ and is arguably the very best drive on the market. You hear more about OCZ because enthusiasts buy OCZ and it's the most popular maker of SSDs.

It's the first controller that performs very well on every single metric thrown at it unlike other which will have pitfalls here and there (like dealing with compressed data).

I can't really justify this purchase though, already running an SSD, I really need a size jump to make a purchase worthwhile. Not really interested running RAID, have enough headaches in my life.

    • +5

No different? umm Intel used sandforce chips on their drives I did not see them having major failure rates.

      • Intel uses their own firmware though so it's not exactly the same, manufacturers that stuck with the generic firmware had similar issues.

I still wouldn't call this SSD "good" though, I'd rather get the cheaper Samsung Evo

        • Never said they are the same just implying that Intel managed to manufacture reliable SSD's with the same chip.

    • -1

You can't possibly make such a remark (-re OCZ failure rates being no different), as the manufacturers don't publically publish their failure rates.

In the absence of factual info, we're left to forming our opinions from anecdotal information.

      • +3

And yes I can guarantee you Intel spent more time and money on quality control where OCZ spent it on marketing their sandforce drives.

  • +4

I prefer buying Samsung/Intel/Crucial over OCZ.

The Vector does not use the chipsets their previous drives used which got them bad rap. It along with 840 PRO (not EVO) are the fastest drives out there.

      • +3

I've never had a drive made by the preferred 3 die on me (I've been buying SSD's, since 2008), but did have trouble with the two OCZ units I purchased (2009, 2011), so personally it's not worth the trouble with OCZ.

This OCZ is more expensive than drives from larger manufacturers, so not what I would term a 'good deal'.

        • Well I haven't heard of any Vector problems yet.

      • +2

OCZ's problem is not the controller issue, it's the quality control problem.

  • +4

the worst brand in term of quality and cost more? this deal must be a joke.

  • I've had a Vertex 2 60GB since Jan 2011 and never had a problem (except not enough space…)

    • With luck like that, you should buy yourself a lottery ticket…

    • I have an Agility 3 60GB which is >2 years old working well. Sadly it came after 2 RMA's of previous OCZ drives.

I stick with Samsung these days and judging on the failure rate statistics above, I'm on a good thing.

  • Am Running a vertex 3 currently and have been for ~6mos It works well, is fast and has caused no problems thus far.
I did get a 256 Samsung 840 Pro more recently for my laptop and it is noticeably faster
