Finally I found a deal worth posting!
Heat Beads BBQ starter kit with 2.5 kg of heat beads included.
Found in my local Woolworths store in Karingal VIC (the one near Bakers Delight).
Quick check of Bunnings & Masters websites shows just the starter (chimney) selling for $28.70 without any heat beads included.
Could not find on Woolworths website.
Was roughly 7 left on the shelf this morning.

  • I saw that also in Woolies Brisbane Eight mile plains and was not happy as I bought the chimney at Bunnings 2 months ago for around $28. Woolies at Eight mile plains had only 2 so not worth posting.

  • Hopefully there's one left after work this afternoon.

  • Great deal, anyone else found these in Melbourne?

The Chimneys are great to prepare your charcoal, I have the one from Bunnings. I use it on my Weber OTG even though I have the Rapidfire Charcoal grate.

But please do not buy these commercial heat beads if you want to enjoy a nice BBQ :|
Find someone local who sells you proper charcoal bags. I buy 20kg bags for $35.

While you are at it, grab some wood chips to smoke stuff.

    • is there any reason not to start the charcoal fire in your bbq directly other than time?

      • I can tell you, apart from saving time. It is more convenient and all you do is put the charcoal in and use firelighter at the bottom and leave it for maybe 15-20minutes and you will see that most of the charcoals are ready to be transferred. You don't even need to arrange the charcoals. I also find it, I may only use 1 long firelighter.

        • Correct.

Also, the correct time to put your meat (food) and start cooking is when the charcoal gets the red glow. Till that happens there is quite a bit of smoke released from the charcoal while its burning. You don't want to cook with that smoke still there. The fire off the burning charcoal can burn thinner meat as well. Raw meat absorbs smoke the best, (that's why you add wood chips to add the smoky flavour while the meat is still raw) that charcoal smoke spoils the flavour.

It takes bit of time to heat up the charcoal directly in your BBQ. The chimney's shape channels air through it's vents to the charcoal, and the charcoal at the bottom helps in heating up the charcoals up the top of the chimney, saving you on fire starters. You can kind of recreate that by putting the charcoals piled up on top of each other inside the BBQ, but it's way easier in the chimney. :)

          Hope that helps.

A large (commercial kitchen type) fruit tin with the bottom cut out and a few holes drilled in the side does the same job and it's free.

my mate picked one up from mt ommaney woolworths in queensland for $7 on the weekend.
another mate picked one up for $15 last week from the brookwater woolies.
$15 is cheap, but not really a bargain!

  • I use a old used paint tin bucket and cut out the bottom.
I go the cheaper way……..and I have had it for years
