Nice for a 12"er. So many 12"ers are expensive due to the balance of power compared to the Atom models and portability compared to the normal larger notebooks.

  • Nice spec for a small portable. Anyone knows how much it weights?

  • Slight error in the title, it's not a C2D CPU rather a Pentium Dual Core. They're based on the same architecture so it's a minor issue but they're quite not the same.

    • thanks mate, fixed

    • True. Although according to PassMark, Pentium Dual Core T4200 is only slightly behind my 18 months old Core 2 Duo T7500 in this Dell Latitude, i.e. heaps faster than those pathetic netbooks :)

This is a very good deal for a 12.1". It's a rebadged MSI VR220. User discussion about this system is at http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1164956&p…. +ve!

  • Looks good but it has shared memory for the graphics processor.. But then again 4 gigs of ram for under a grand will more then compensate. Not to mention that the new chipset helps decode HD so low end pc's won't lag.

The wireless is pre-N compatible so should be relatively fast.

    Plus an 8cell li-Ion battery.

I'd scrap the vista and put Beta 7 on it, the 7RC should be out soon.

With all the added extras I assume this will be a little weighty though, probably the only draw back.

Now sure if the screen is HD either.

Think I might go pick one up on the 7th :p

    • Next to impossible to get a discrete GFX card in this form factor (though there are a few 10" ASUS's around with the 9300 GO).

The video card can natively decode 1080p HD, and it can even play DX10 titles on very low settings. Will cream most yester-year games like HL2, TF2, etc.

Windows 7 RC is already out.

Definitely a HD screen too! (1280x800).

7RC has been leaked but it's not the official release which comes out on may 5th.

It's a port of an asian beta, that has had an english language pack installed over top.

I almost bought one of those Asus X50GL-AP302C with the nVidia GeForce 8200M GS Graphics for $1048 from the online computer shop but I think this one may be more value for money, plus you have the whole 60 day trial period so I'll check it out then work out which one I want.

        • My mistake, but it will be released before the laptop is offered for sale :)

The ASUS is nice, but this is much better value for money. Definitely make use of the 60 day trial (I have in the past) it's a great opportunity to use the notebook and see if it's right for you. I have bought Medion laptops before and have been very impressed with their quality. Can't say I'll buy this one but I'll sure recommend it to anyone who wants a portable!

    • screen is not HD
      it is 1280X800
      i don't think you can fit 1920X1080 in a 12.1 inch screen

4Gb ram for under a grand!

  • It's a pity that the price is not $1,000 - otherwise would be even better value because of the extra 30% instant "Rudd" depreciation for small business - plus the normal depreciation as well!!!

    • just round up, ATO won't care. You're allowed rounding errors, $1 is considered to be such an error

buy a mouse or usb key in the same transaction to take it over the 1k… I believe this is allowed under the scheme for related item purchased together.

    • Could someone point me to the relevant info about this depreciation thing?

  • I think it needs to be $1000 ex gst or $1100 inc GSt.
That way you can claim back the GST and still get the 30% rebate too.
The benefit is not so great if you claimthe 30% depreciateion and not the GST to keep it at $1000.

    Am i making sense here??

  • To get this investment allowance of 30% you need to have an ABN. If you are registered for GST then its $1100, you'll get $100 back as a GST credit leaving the value of the comp @ 1k. If you are not registered then the price needs to be 1k but you don't get any gst credits back. I did a rough estimate of this and it turns out that you get about 46% of the total price of the computer assuming

*your marginal tax rate is @30% income between 30k<=>75k, the % will be higher or lower depending on your tax rate
*making a profit in your business, so you can use the dep exp to offset it.
*register for GST, gives 10% back.

  • nice price, great specs…regretting my 10 inch asus now!

  • Stocks were gone by the time i got to a couple of aldi's by lunchtime here in Melbourne.
