Looks excellent for a budget system!

  • I am just wondering if it is possible to combine two of these to get performance close to one 780 ?
    (see http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php)

    • +4

are you asking if you can spend $240~ and get $700~ worth of performance?

It will get you around 7970/ GTX680 performance I believe.. but with the quibbles that come with crossfire

      • yep, i have 2 in my system and ir benches to equal a single 7970

        • 1 or 2GB cards?

        • +1

Dang, didn't think the 7970 was that strong.

        • 2 x 7970's can be had for roughly the same price as a single GTX 780 and they blow it out of the water.

Still kicking myself for missing that $299 deal at MSY. Hopefully another will come around soon :)

          the 2gb ones

  • Shipping $17 to Sydney.

    • $23 NSW

Well worth the extra for the 2GB card

    • Clock speed will likely bottleneck before VRAM except on Skyrim or running other games at resolutions higher than 1920x1200. If you intend on keeping the card for 2+ years, the 2GB may come in handy, but otherwise not so much.

Not true. BF3 or Crysis multiplayer run like crap with a 1GB card on ultra 1080p settings. Much less newer titles like Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider or BF4.

I went from GTX460 SLI to single GTX670 at one point - performance is pretty similar in older games but difference is crystal clear if you try BF3 MP conquest on Gulf of Oman.

        • Almost every review I read said contrary - http://bit.ly/19VfBq2

        • +2

          @thebargainhunter

Keep in mind that all the reviews out there with a 1GB/2GB comparison are at least a year old and as such they don't include any benchmarks for the newer titles which could actually utilize the extra memory.

        • Almost every review uses single player benchmarks to keep the test consistent to get valid results.

When you have 64 players on a massive map with crap exploding everywhere it's a far cry from running through corridors in single player.

  • $26/27+ to WA

  • Postage for 1 card to Sydney 2000 = $18
    Postage for 2 cards to Sydney 2000 = $17

    I don't get it…

    • +3

      Incentive.

      • +3

But then 3 goes back up to $18…

        • 2 is the magic number then.

        • +1

          don't want too much incentive

    • +14

      I don't get it

Don't get it, get both :P

  • Still running a Gigabyte 5850HD in my system. How is this card compared to mine when I am only running max 1920x1200 resolution on a 24-inch monitor?

    • +4

Depends how much you may notice whilst running Word.

      • Hehe I didn't know there is a 3D game called Word.

        • +1

          hello WORDART

You're looking at far better DX11 performance with the 7850
      http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/graphics/36269-amd-radeon-hd-7…

But probably only a 15% difference overall when looking at DX 10 and lower games.

The 5850 back in the day was a 'high end' performer that cost around $300, but the 7850 here is actually more of a "mid tier" $249 (launch price) budget card, so obviously this won't be much of an upgrade to you.

I find this Toms hardware a great article for comparing video cards! They recommend not upgrading unless you jump at least three tiers higher! No SLI or crossfire references though!

    • Thanks for the link. Wow, didn't expect my 3 year old 5850 still rank 8th overall in Radeon hierarchy.

  • +3

The 1GB for $119 is an absolute cracker of a deal!

I almost jumped, then realised I probably want a 2gb card, even though I'm sticking with my 1920x1200 27" for a while longer. But the extra $30 (extra 25%) seems unreasonable for the 2gb - despite $149 being $20 cheaper than anywhere else (according to staticice). I'm torn - and will probably miss out while I hesitate.

I've been watching all of these $300+ deals waiting for a mid-range budget option. (read: approx $150) This is probably it, or are there more coming?

    • I seriously doubt you'll do better than this. At this price, it would appear CA bought up big from their supplier to clear out all of their older series AMD to make way for the 200X series.

      • I'm guessing you went with the 1gb? How'd you decide, other than the graph you linked to earlier? (Very weird results in that graph by the way. Doesn't make sense at all)

I'm very tempted, but if I go crossfire later, 1gb is a bit limiting

        • Yeah, I got the 1gb. I read a few reviews saying performance is slightly better with the 1gb if playing at 1080p and lower. Besides, I was just about to get a 7790 for the same price which is significantly slower all round.

          Review link - http://bit.ly/19VfBq2
"Performance Analysis - In Battlefield 3 at 1,920 x 1,080, the MSI HD 7850 1GB was actually able to outperform the 2GB version thanks to its factory overclock, albeit by a single frame per second on the minimum frame rate. This suggests that the 2GB's extra 1GB of GDDR5 is all but useless at this resolution."

BF4 performance (and only single player):

    http://www.techspot.com/review/734-battlefield-4-benchmarks/…

    Ultra = 26FPS @ 1920x1200

Sure, great card … . . if you like console settings.

    • +4

High (what I've been playing at with mine) is still achieving a minimum of over 40fps and looks way better than the 360 - not everyone wants to spend $300+ on a video card just so they can set everything to ultra when a card a third of the price performs so well.

    • +3

On the very same page linked above it shows the 7850 is playable (46fps) at high settings.

Just think for a minute who would be buying this. If they're only spending $119, they're probably not demanding ultra settings at 1200p. If you want Ultra, you pay a lot more.

<$120 for high quality BF4 at playable framerates. How is that not a bargain?!

Computer Alliance is a shop I can recommend even to the oldies. Great service and often the best prices.

    • i like that it is open on sundays for impulse computer purchasing.

i don't like the incredibly slow counter service once you have decided to buy something. they only have one checkout and do a detailed invoice.. can be painful.

  • So this would be good for a semi budget gaming system? Helping build one for my girlfriend.

  • OP Can you confirm what cables this comes with? (is there a mini-DP to HDMI or full size DP?)
    EDIT: oh well expired now.

    • You can still "pre-order" at the same price. It'd be worth asking them, if you're interested.

  • +3

    They are back in stock!

    • Only the 1GB version though, unless the 2GB sold out again.

  • Is this a sign of cards of similar style/quality are due to drop soon due to new models etc being released? ie. should I jump on this, or if I am happy to wait a month or so, most cards will be at this price?

Reason: I'm broke this week. :(

    • I'm hoping another similar deal comes along as my order was cancelled even though the website showed them still being in stock when I ordered.

    • My gut instinct is that there will be more deals like this. I've been spending too much time reading forums and searching for deals, so when this showed up, I decided to hurry up and buy.

Went with the 1GB because of it's value. It will do the job quite well with my current games. A quick test last night showed it will max out most things I've got at 1200p.

There is a possible upgrade path: The 7800 series will crossfire with R9 270X (which is just an updated 7870). Within a year the 270 will probably be under $200 (specials near $150?) and can be a primary card. In some scenarios the 7850 in crossfire will help, though my 1GB ram will still be a problem.

If this doesn't sound appealing to you, there are more deals to come I'm sure. Keep an eye out for one you like.

Just my 2c, in case it helps your decision making.

      • +1

Yeah, I'm sorely tempted by all these GPU deals, but I'm playing my steam backlog and the very best games from a few of years ago (that I bought for $5 each) just don't need the extra performance, for the most part. They're maxed out anyway, or the high settings look too similar to ultra to worry about it.

Go my card today after ordering on Tues. Excellent service and also got a voucher for 2 free games.
    Thief 4 (Not even released yet…)/ Sleeping dogs/Deus Ex/Dirt 3/Hitman/Blood Dragon.

    • Was this with the 1GB or the 2GB card?
Was the voucher inside the box or did they give it to you over the counter?

      • I got the 2GB version. So not sure about the 1GB. It was stuck to the outside of the box. I had it express posted.

      • I got a 1gb and emailed them after taking it home as there wasn't a code in or on the box. Email was sent promptly with a code.

        • Thanks for reminding me, I totally forgot about the game code. Picked my card up on Thursday will have to ask if I can still get one.
