Is Click Frenzy or Boxing Day worth waiting for?

I am waiting to look for a good time to get a laptop. Just wondering from everyone's experiences, is it worth waiting for the upcoming 20th November click frenzy or just wait till boxing day?

Why would you wait for click frenzy? It's just a celebration of crashing servers for average prices.

If Ozbargain proves anything, there's bargains every day, you just have to find them.

What kinda laptop you looking for? I'm good at that sorta stuff and bored at work ;) I might be able to suggest a good model for you :)

As for whether its worth waiting, ozbargain offers better deals than any click frenzy or boxing day deal so there's not that much point skipping a good ozbargain deal in the hope it'll be cheaper later.

Also there seems to be a lot of laptop turnover at the moment, old models are being cleared out and new ones coming in. Dunno if that's just a new range of haswell laptops slowly trickling down to the aussie market or they trying to get everything updated to windows 8.1..
I was in officeworks a week ago and their laptop bench was practically bare, guy said they were waiting on new models to come in in a couple of weeks.
Toshiba has had a few good models go out of stock too, the L50A, a good value non touch i7 Ivy Bridge Laptop with decent gaming graphics card.. used to go for $699 on special now its gone :(
And the toshiba p50t is another great one. The old A01C model is now gone and replaced with the A016 which is around the $1400 mark. A fantastic laptop with ALL the features, but waiting for a good bargain on it, be perfect for $1200. Full HD Touch Screen etc.

Anyway let me know what you are looking for in a laptop and I'll see if I can suggest a good model number for you to keep an eye on through the regular channels like staticice and mild surprise. At least until i need to get back to work haha

      THIS
Just do a search on Laptop and note that there is no spike in bargains after Christmas

  • thanks riczter, im looking for a laptop not more than 1000 dollars, really regret missing the offer on the toshiba p50t that was great, but because I am going overseas at the end of december, I would have missed the gst rebate..

theres a half decent one last night http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122920 but it seems the screen is the only limiting factor.

Just wanna play some games such as total war 2, world of tanks, doesnt have to be on high graphcs for either. Just runnably smooth.

Been stalking ozbargain for logical blue one offers.. havent seen any in a while

Do you care about Full HD Screen, or Touch Screen? These usually add the most to the price, if not you should be able to get under 1k easy enough.

      You'd be after a haswell i5 or i7 then, with 8GB RAM..

Hard Drive, do you want a big slow hard drive or a small fast hard drive? SSDs are great for speeding up a laptop but again they bump up the price a fair bit..

Dell had an i7/8GBRAM 2GBGFX Inspiron touch 15R that wouldve fit the bill nicely for $400 discount. I haven't seen what their latest offers are for this week so I'll have a squiz. JB HiFi have the exact same model on special at the moment for $1103 which is $54 more than it was at dell… but non Full HD Screen and slow 5400RPM hard drive will turn most people away. Does have a good graphics card though.. I was surprised to see the benchmarks on the cards they pack in the dells are a fair bit better than the NVIDIA 740m/745M that are floating around currently…

      • I don't care about touch screen to be honest, but for the screen preferably full hd, and 15.6" screens.

as for hard drives, slow big hard drives are fine, cause the new laptops load up really fast anyways, theres always room to upgrade to a ssd when it is cheaper in the future.

not very keen on Dell.. heard many horror stories, and also im staying from sony after mine died pretty quickly, probably looking towards asus, lenovo, toshiba and onwards. Furthermore with $1103, I would probably extra extra for a horize laptop which differs by 100 at most.

Yeah fair enough, I definitely prefer Toshiba. I'm hoping they bring out a haswell full HD non touch successor to the L50A. Basically the P50T without touchscreen and more SSD Cache for under $1200 That would be ideal, otherwise yeah ASUS have some good stuff. It's a tricky market segment to cater for because theres so much there but they all have something wrong with them ie non-full HD, non haswell etc. Don't know much about Lenovo, their design usually doesnt appeal to me, HP i've heard stay away from the pavilions but the ENVY and sleekbooks are meant to be ok in terms of build quality. Stay away from ACER in general, sony are usually pretty good, their new Vaio Pro is the lightest ultrabook around at the moment and seems to be doing very well, so much so they just raised the RRP by $100 the bastards ;) No idea what samsung is up to, i think they are falling behind :/
That's all the product knowledge i got for you for now.
I'll keep my eye on Toshiba over the next couple of weeks and see if anything else pops up. As I've said my client is looking for the same so I'll message you if I find something good :)

        • Oh the Toshiba I'm looking for does exist! :) Model number is L50-A01Q.
Going for $1299 at Dick Smith and Harvey Norman, they seem to be the only ones selling it at the moment, but its brand new so wait for other stores to start stocking it and the prices will drop a bit. Wait for them to have a sale and grab it then.
Dick smith has gotta be due for another Toshiba sale soon.. 15% off will bring it down to $1104…. still pricey. Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll do 20% :P Good chance that officeworks will start stocking these soon too, if so get the extra 5% price match etc. Get the GST back when you leave the country and you'll be laughin :)

So yeah sit tight for another couple of weeks and see what pops up :)

          Here's the specs:
          http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/products/computers/satellite/l50…

        • for toshiba i remember seeing a really nice deal before, and i just found out you were the one that actually posted it lol

          http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/113082

I remember seeing it in dicksmith or JB for roughly 800 without the sale. That would be well under my budget but the specs are great. I guess another good one would be

          http://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers/toshiba/satellite-15-6-in…

not sure if the upgrade in the processor is worth it

        • +1

Yeah that's the L50A I was talkin about before. The Last 2 of these got snapped up when they went on clearance as per this post: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122032 :P
          They were a great deal.

That toshiba at JB is a little overpriced, you'd be better off getting the Envy 15 for the same price and having the added bonus of the touchscreen.

The upgrade between ivy bridge and haswell processors is less about performance gain and more about significantly increased battery life due to better efficiency.

So if you care about battery life then go haswell, if not then save a few more $$$ and look for a clearance Ivy bridge model :)

        • ah i see, wasnt too sure about the difference about ivy bridge and haswell. thanks for clearing it up. :)

please let me know if you find something good and I hope you dont mind if i message you about whether or not a deal is worth it. Many thanks!

        • No worries at all :)

    • +1

Oh yeah that HP Envy 15 was one of the suggestions I gave my client whos looking for something similar.
Like you said the low screen res is a limiting factor as well as the slow mechanical hard drive, not even a small ssd cache drive to speed things up. I don't recomment laptops with slow hard drives. Once you get an SSD you'll never look back ;) but yeah they are expensive.

All in all the HP Envy 15 is good at that price. Flingshot also have it for $1048, and they might price match it plus free shipping.. worth a try.

I did hear a rumour of overheating on the Envy 15… just one forum post, so may be nothing, but worth mentioning if its gonna be used for games.

  • Black Friday is 29th November. Perhaps B&H will have something on sale?

  • +1

    Generally no.

  • Boxing Day sales maybe, but Click Frenzy DEFINITELY NOT.

I think it's OK to look forward to Boxing Day sales because you have a bunch of offline retailers like for instance Peters of Kensington who don't do that type of sale at any other time during the year. But with Click Frenzy, they're all online anyhow, and online retailers are offering discounts pretty much on a weekly basis - it's just the nature of the game.

I think if you frequently visit sites like OzBargain you'll do just as good, if not better than you would if you waited for ClickFrenzy. RetailMeNot (http://www.retailmenot.com) is another good one that I use frequently, AllTheDeals is good if you like group buying (although I think we're all over that..), Shopstyle (http://www.shopstyle.com) has a sale section that is useful for finding discounted fashion and OneSlashTwo (http://www.oneslashtwo.com.au) covers fashion sales, promos, coupons etc.
