  • What's gonna happen is:

    1. Sale will be announced for a particular time, with half of the people not receiving their JetMail, or receiving it hours after the event, due to technical difficulties.

    2. Everyone will know about it anyway, so hardly "members exclusive".

    3. Jetstar website WILL crash.

  • -4

yup I agree - I don't think I've ever received info on the specials until AFTER they've all sold out

    • +2

I always receive their emails in time. Don't vote negative on past issues that might not occur for this sale.

  • +1

Oh I love these deals, don't get me wrong. I've scored a couple really cheap fares as well.

But it's just really really hard to get them, and half the time the travel period is not ideal.

I'll still be having a go when the sale is on! :)

  • +1

"Take a friend for Free" sale will follow this 5c impossible to get sale.

These 5c seats are crap, they are usually on dead days, 6am, 10pm flights, tuesdays and wednesdays. Lets hope Virgin has a nice sale!

  • Just out of interest, what sort of fees are there with these? How much should I actually be prepared to pay? I'm guessing maybe something like $20 each way?

    • They are normally genuine sales and the prices they advertise are the prices you pay, but credit card charges will apply.

So it's entirely feasible to buy two return tickets from Avalon (Melbourne) to Sydney or Adelaide for 20 cents plus $6 CC charges.

      That's carry-on luggage (10kg) only btw.

      • Awesome though by fees I meant taxes. sorry. Aren't there airport taxes and stuff that are independent of the airline's costs? Or will Jetstar cover those themselves?

        • Yeah nah I understood what you meant. What they advertise is what you need to pay, not one cent more, no taxes and airport charges. (except you know the CC charges)

I think it's actually against the law to advertise a domestic fare excluding taxes.

          • +1

@cacbm: I'm not sure about their new website, but on their old system you could still pay by direct deposit.

It had 2 advantages helping you secure the ticket:

            1. No need to type in all the credit card numbers before buying the ticket so its faster (less chance to miss out)

            2. Less processing time since you pay them later

            total price = $0.10 return :)

          • @cacbm: edit: removed dupe post

  • How genuine are Jetstar sales? I've always tried to buy them but fail miserably due to congestion on the site. And when I do get the page load, its all sold out. Does the staffs get priority first? Maybe the travel agents also get to access it prior to retail customers?
But I will still try, not a quitter ^_^

    • I reckon they are very genuine, as I scored really really cheap fare a few times myself. A lot of my friends have success in the past as well.

I agree it's hard to get but I don't think anyone gets priority, I doubt there'll be any travel agent booking these cheap fares, that's not how they operate.

  • -2

This posting is not a deal as such.

    • How is it not a deal?

  • i doubt we'll get any of the 5c flights..

  • Just out of curiosity, how do you know they are going to have 5c flights?

    • -1

Last years was 4c (if you got it). Then when everyone was pissed off they released a buy one fare get another for $4.

      • No, they were $4.
It cost more in Credit card fee's than the flight.

Took the whole family (7 people), from Brisbane (flew out on a Wednesday), to cairns (came back saturday), for 92 dollars return in total. Awesome bargain for 7 people.

  • Does anyone remember what date-ish last years went on sale? And when sale dates were for?

Oh, and I've not yet managed to get a Jetstar sale fare, but I got some great Tiger ones last year, so I live in hope :)

  • There's not much of a chance of them doing any international deals is there? Be good if I could go to japan and back for 10 cents :P

    • Haha, I'm hoping for Japan tix too, I doubt for 5c, but maybe with other deals :)

  • -1

Be aware that BOTH Jetstar & Tiger Airways always change flight times 24 hours before your flight is ready to board.

This is because they juggle and cancel some flights that are half-full. They cancel flights and bump individual passengers onto later or earlier flights, to ensure all flights become full, eventually. This "sorting process" is done manually by a human being (an "Airline Flight Scheduler") & begins 24 hours before each flight commences.

No cheap carrier (Virgin, Jetstar, Tiger) ever flies half empty these days - the fuel costs are just too expensive. They'd rather just cancel the flight altogether, and email you 24 hours before to tell you.

If they bump you onto a "later" flight, this could be at 6am, tommorow morning.

This happens often with Jetstar. Many people get stranded at the airport when it closes, and have to sleep on the concrete sidewalk outside like a homeless person:

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/02/01/2151994.htm

So, just be aware of this when you book accomodation, pickups from the airport, etc…

    • that news story is like 1.5 years old…Anyway, Fuel prices are around $40, which is about the lowest they have ever been. Tiger have not cancelled a flight in 6 months.

      • -1

They HAVE to cancel some flights, and fill others.

        Otherwise, they can't survive.

It's the nature of the industry.

Ryanair & EasyJet in the UK and Eire do the exact same.

      • Tiger have not cancelled a flight in 6 months.

But they delay alots like 80% most of the time I went with them. Recent one was in April more than 2 hrs at airport & arrived in Mel early morning. They don't worry the safety of others…not good enough Tiger!

    • I just got back form Malaysia on Air Asia and the flight up was about 10-20% full and back was about 70%

  • sorry just confirming that apart from this warning email has there been any word on what day this sale will be?

    • No there hasn't been other communications.

  • Is this it it's already expired? http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/cheap-flights/birthday-sale.asp… It was on the site map yesterday but it's not there anymore and it says it expired last week. I'm confused!

    • It's not on sale now, it will be in the near future. So you haven't missed it, but we just don't know when it is.

  • sale should begin 7/8pm tonight.

    • How do you know sunstar? Do you work for jetstar or something?

    • +2

      Actually it's 10pm - 11pm (AEST) tonight ;)

  • Get set JetMail Members, it's our 5th birthday and this sale is just for you!

We will be offering 5000 seats for only 5 cents to our JetMail members only, from 10pm - 11pm (AEST) tonight, Tuesday 5 May, unless sold out prior. 5 cent fares will be on limited routes only and for travel in selected periods.

So for only 5 cents, you could be on a flight to a fantastic Australian destination! That INCLUDES surcharges, fees and taxes! Prices are based on payment by direct deposit through jetstar.com.

Sale fares are JetSaver Light^ fares for when you travel with carry on baggage only, or you can choose a JetSaver fare for just $10 more for domestic flights with the full 20kg checked baggage allowance. Limit of four passengers per booking.

The only way you will be able to access this sale is via the button in this email, so set your alarm for 10pm tonight, then click on the button for all the details, including routes, travel periods, and to book.

  • Okay. 10pm to 11pm… its a bit later than other ones - do you think the website will be able to take it? also its not for anyone, only for jetstar email members… hopefully it wont crash!!

  • Has everyone got the link??
Im subscribed but havnt got the email yet.
Is the link the same for everybody and is it personalised?? I guess it would be generic.

  • I'm aiming for buy-1-take friend for free to Japan :(

  • is it 7-8 AWST… and 10pm-11pm AEST?

  • Lets wait n see shall we all? Can't wait to go OVERSEAS for 5c!

    Domestic Routes Travel Period
    2 Feb - 11 Mar 2010 JetSaver Light^
    Fares $AUD
    Melbourne (Tullamarine) <-> Hobart 5c
    Melbourne (Tullamarine) <-> Newcastle 5c
    Brisbane <-> Newcastle 5c
    Brisbane <-> Mackay 5c
    Sydney <-> Gold Coast 5c

    • Dang, I was hoping that they would have flights including Perth and Adelaide…

    • That’s disappointing.

Not only there’s a very limited destinations but the travel period is nearly a year away!

  • website down

  • Exactly, website is down even before 10pm. But most people will probably find the offer disappointing.

  • Melbourne (Tullamarine) Hobart 5c
    Melbourne (Tullamarine) Newcastle 5c
    Brisbane Newcastle 5c
    Brisbane Mackay 5c
    Sydney Gold Coast 5c

    • nothing from adelaide :(

  • What a joke. Can anyone get through?

  • already down :(

  • Cant get through… Not alot of places to go… For 5c though I will still try to get a flight! ^_^

  • Nope………..

  • website down……….

    • as expected

    • Im not sure that the website could even cope with selling 5000 tickets in one hour. Thats more than one ticket sold per second, each ticket involving a few screenfuls of info… I cant even commence a booking let alone complete it. Hmm…

  • You'd think they'd improved their servers by now.

    • +1

But then they'd actually have to sell some cheap fares ;)

    • Well, to improve them to the point that they could handle such explosive traffic would cost a significant amount of money.

Then it's not even the servers that need to be upgraded, applications have to be rewritten and thoroughly optimised to handle so many connections. You can give it all the raw processing power in the world but sometimes it just can't make use of it.

Plus - tickets sell out regardless of whether or not the website is difficult to access. Customers will be even more frustrated if the servers are upgraded because they'll simply get rejected quicker (i.e. 10:02PM instead of 10:14PM).

      • +1

I like being rejected quicker. That way I can try again a lot sooner.

        • By rejected I mean being told that all seats are sold out. If everything went as fast as possible all the seats would sell out in mere seconds, I can assure you of that. Within a minute or two all seats would be sold out and people would be wondering "WTF".

  • Managed a Melb to Hobart return for $6.10 - was sitting on the dates I wanted from 9.50PM, refreshing the screen! Had an 'Error' when processing at the final stage, but my card has been charged. Guess this means it has been accepted?

    • Looks like they've entered into a contract with you because they've charged your card, so I'd say the flights are yours. Additionally, keep an eye out for confirmation e-mails of course.

    • Well done. I'm still trying. Prob give up soon.

    • Nice idea gordo. Will try that next time…

  • the phone is down as well :(

  • Finally got through to the availabilities, but they are $59-89 range haha

  • :D managed to get 2 x syd to gold coast return flights - 20 cents, like promised. Man, I just hope their planes don't crash like their servers are!!

  • Ayes, had my dates selected but forgot to put "two adults" and instead only got one adult. Then I refreshed the page and lost my session. oh well didn't really need to goto Hobart anyway :)

  • Offline for maintenance lol

  • anybody managed to grab the cheap flights?

  • half an hour of my life wasted …good luck those still trying

  • Yes I did get 2 tickets Melb to Hobart return for $12.20 total. Tried for 15min though.

    cheers.

  • impossible to get through, tried 35 mins

  • Somehow I must've got lucky, cause I nabbed a second set of tickets too, on the same route but reverse! I've found this to be one of the better Jetstar sales in terms of the system - probably due to the time and the lack of Sydney routes?

    • thats fucked, im annoyed

  • waste of time

  • +1

    Note to diary:
Spent one hour hitting reload on jetstar.com website. Didnt even get to the first page. All for the chance of picking up a 5c ticket to a destination i had no interest in going to anyway. I might just give next years 6c sale a miss…

  • Network Timeout
The server at book.jetstar.com is taking too long to respond.
The requested site did not respond to a connection request and the browser has stopped waiting for a reply.

Could the server be experiencing high demand or a temporary outage? Try again later.
Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.
Still having trouble? Consult your network administrator or Internet provider for assistance.

…. in other words: usual crap from Jetstar's web servers when they're having a 'sale'

    • This time I didnt get a timeout - I got this instead:

      Sorry!
      Thanks for your search.
Our website is experiencing very high levels of demand right now.
We're working as hard as we can to help you find the fare you want.
In the meantime please try one of the following, as it may help you find what you're looking for:
Wait 60 seconds and try your search again
If that's unsuccessful and you want to try again, please wait 60 seconds each time before you search to give yourself the best chance of being successful.
Or, try again in about 5 minutes. You should be able to see if the level of demand has dropped.
      Thanks for choosing Jetstar!

      • Heres a new one

JetStar prod SkySales is currently offline. (JQRZPSAWB913)

  • I think most of the tickets are sold out 'cos I'm in and haven't seen any of the specials.

  • Arghhh i got an error message at the very very last stage of payment. Sigh
Does anyone know whether Jetstar sends you any confirmation email if you have succesfully purchased the seats?

    • Yeah, check the email address you supplied. Confirmation emails seemed to come pretty quickly.

  • yea, no use, timeout timeout timeout.

i can;t even call it a sale, its more like, try your luck.

  • WTF. i press pay then i get an error, and now i lost my seats!

  • as usual, time out!!!!

would NOT trust Jetstar sale again!!!
