From the promo material:

We're a growing family, so we thought you'd appreciate an all you can eat Smörgåsbord at our restaurant. Come in and celebrate Christmas the Swedish way.

Swedish winters are long, dark and cold. So during Christmas, Swedes make great efforts in creating a warm and cosy atmosphere at home. The food is important. Even though there are local variations, some items are always found on the Christmas buffet!

The Christmas Smörgåsbord is an institution within Swedish culinary tradition. Many Swedes look forward to it months ahead. There are so many things on the menu that everyone is sure to find at least something they like! Feast on cold dishes such as herring and salmon, moving on to the iconic meatballs and other warm dishes before rounding off with desserts and sweets.

Price is $14.99 for Ikea Family members (free to join, usual price is $19.99)

Wow..calm your farm IVI he was just making a statement.

Is it me or has ozbargain started getting a lot more lowbrow users lately?

  • before rounding off with desserts and sweets

    Ha!

Has anyone been to one of these? Worth it?

  • I did this in The Netherlands with 2 Swedish friends, the biggest pile of shrimp (the size of yabbies) I've ever seen, but I think the Australian version will be different

    • ozzies don't call them shrimps like the yanks, they're prawns!
and the local prawns will definitely be smaller, given that even in the warmest months the Netherlands barely hits an average temp of 18°C

  • ii caaannn'ttt waaaiiittttt… I am going to destroy the smoked salmon!

I visit your "Christmas feast at IKEA" on the 19th December 2012 at Springvale Victoria.
I was somewhat disappointed that as the advertisement referred to a "selection of traditional herrings, salmon, cheese, crisp breads, salads and of course, meatballs"

On arrival all I could find was meatballs, salmon and calamari and chips.

No herrings, No smoke salmon (as shown in the advertisement) no cheese, no crisp breads and no Pepparkakors. Not even a chocolate mouse to please the kids.

I did not raise any concern at the time as I did not want to cause your staff any hassles as they were just doing there job. But to advertise something and to be severed normal IKEA food was a bit disappointing.

If you do go, arrive early, be patient [45-60 minute wait in line to select food], collect everything you want to eat in the first go. Don't be disappointed if what's in the advertisement picture isn't available on the day.

    My 2cents worth.

    • +1 for the detailed review. I'll pass this one then.

    • Did you arrive on-time?

There was no ham either (also went to the Springvale one last year).
Serving portions were restricted, eg. if you selected meatballs you were not allow others in the main menu. Queues were 30+ mins each time.
Dessert was basically apple and cinnamon pie and some ultra sweet stuff covered with marzipan.
There WAS smoked salmon, about two slices in a large tray of salads. Which of course gets fished out by the first lucky person.

    • Thanks for the heads up. Was tempted to go. Sounded too good to be true and your experience confirmed it.

  • Think I'll pass as well based on the reviews. Don't want $15 worth of meatballs after waiting 30+ mins in line ;-)

[US equivalent](http://blog.texasswede.com/swedish-christmas-buffet-at-ikea/ doesn't look that appetising even with the lot

  • I'd love to go but i'm afraid i can't because i don't want to use my fingers since there won't be ANY CUTLERY LEFT, FOR CRYING OUT LOUD ;)

    • Can't you pop downstairs and grab some new cutlery?

  • +1

I'd imagine it would attract a "certain demographic" who have absolutely no respect for others and greedily pile up their plate "because they can", and either completely stuff themselves, or leave a heap on the plate, wasting the food…

    • Hey it's Christmas time, and if that's what they want to do then let them enjoy it!

  • Logan has only 7 tickets left for all dates.

  • +1

With the prices being $5 more than last year (kids were free), maybe you'll get the full buffet this year.
Someone has blogged their experience from last year.

    NO HAM…

IKEA Springvale and Richmnond have confirmed

"Thanks for your email. I have checked with the restaurant manager and the products depicted in the below image (with the exception of the ham) will be available at this years’ Christmas Smorgasboard."

At least you got a reply, I asked about the 'review' above and they are well past the "we will get back to you in 2 days" limit.

  • Event is sold out in Springvale and Richmond, Logan has added additional dates.

The restaurant manager at Springvale said that they have limited this year's tickets 250 while they sold 400 last year - hopefully that means the queues will be minimal.

Well i attended the Springvale one and there was herrings, shrimp, meatballs, salmon and unlike - there was enough choices for what you paid.
Wait time was pretty good, only about 20 mins and after that you could basically walk up and restock. Didnt see to many people over doing it or exploiting it and the servings they gave where more than generous anyway.
Plenty of space to eat as well - wasnt packed out in the slightest.

    • Thanks for the update.

    • great info for the future
