  • Still a good handset for the price

      1Gig ram in the 3G vs 2Gig ram I rather the 4G.

        • +17

just turn off the 4g then/ you can still use 3g. 2Gb of ram and the revised chipset is more than enough reason the go with this model.

        • -4

what revised chipset? can you elaborate? i was not aware of this. also you can't turn off 4G you can only choose 3G only or the H setting only (pre 3G). so in unstable networks where you always jump around from 3G to H it's an issue.

        • +1

There's no GSM/WCDMA setting - thats strange? There are issues with the S3 that cause it just to crap out/ sudden death (more-so than other samsung phones) which is one of the reasons why the original S3 is discontinued.
But like everything, every revision has some small un-noted improvements.

2GB of RAM on a smartphone improves the responsiveness of the device. When I switched from a 1G RAM device to 2GB RAM device, the experience was amazing, especially switching a lot between apps.

          Good price on a S3 (4G model w 2GB RAM).

        • +3

There's no problem with the battery on this model. Wife has had it for ages. Much better to have this model than the lesser 3G.

        • +4

You can choose 3g/2g mode. Possibly not in the settings, but dialling ##4636## (works on all phones) will bring you some more phone settings. If you go into phone info you can select preferred network type in pretty much any combination, such as GSM/WCDMA auto.

        • +1

          ##4636## doesn't work on my S3 4G.

        • +4

          It's *#*#4636#*#*

It was typed correctly above but the use of the asterisks made the hash show up in italics.

        • I have this phone. Battery is ok -not bad but not great.

BUT you can get the OEM extended 3000mah battery for about $30-40 and all your worries will be gone.

        • That is not turning off 4G, that is setting exclusively 3G. This is bad as whenever you lose 3G your phone won't fallback to GSM and instead just lose signal altogether.

    • It's called changing to the spare battery. You are paying for the privilege to be able to do that. Use it.

    OW price match for $379.05
Then ogange everyday split into 4 transactions for $360.10

    • +10

      THIS IS OZBARGAIN!!! :D

    • +2

Anyone who gets a pricematch at Officeworks, Or the original at Kmart can you please upload an receipt.

    • +6

Just for heads up….Tried the ING split when bought 2 Akai TVs from OW deal last month…Got a call from ING following week that they will stop the benefit if card is not used for intended purpose which is everyday transactions :)….the person who called mentioned that their system detects when paywave reward card is used for splitting transactions :)

      • +13

        I bet u splitted it like a noob. (e.g. 99, 99, xx remainder). you need pro splitting like ($85.75, $62.84, $30.60, $78.81 for a $250 TV)

        • +8

They would still note you made 4 transactions with the same retailer one after the other.

      • +1

I cought and suspended 5% rebate in 2 month after account open

      • +6

Buy a bunch of 99 dollar gift cards, then buy the phone/TV etc?

        • +1

and don`t buy it the same day.

      • +4

Same here - I got the call from ING after splitting an ipad purchase in big w
Felt like a scolded schoolchild. I even argued with them that there was nothing in the T's and C's about split transactions being banned, but they weren't wearing it.
Next time I multi-transact in the same retailer - I get knocked back to 2%

  • -1

Hello can you tell me which OW matched the price, also what is ogange everyday split into 4 transactions for $360.10 Thanks.

    • grab the kmart catalogue - and any office works with stock should match the price.

Orange Everyday bank card gives you 5% back when you using paypass for transactions under $100. so if you split the 379.05 into 4, you'll actually pay 5% less on the total price.

    • -1

when you organge everyday the condition is "contactless transactions" only i used the paywave but my hand sliped and the card fell out of my hand and only the efpos machine. I had to call up ING to explain what happened. They gave me the 5% anyway so I was lucky.

      • I'm goiong to presume that was a joke. If so, I laughed with you. If not, it was at you

  • +5

You be crazy to not just get the nexus 5. https://play.google.com/store/devices/details/Nexus_5_16GB_W…

    • First thing I thought as well.. Anyone got a pro/con between them??

      • +5

One pro for the N5 could be the speed of delivery of OS updates. Phone has been out 5 weeks and KitKat 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 are already out there. They are there for the N4 as well.

      • +9

        Sure thing.

        pro's for nexus 5:
it's new, oo shiny, only came out the start of november
        1080p display (better screen!)
First device to receive new android updates, and into the future. the s3 will not progress past android 4, where as the nexus 5 WILL.
        Stock android (no samsung bloat)
        wifi ac (faster!)
        wireless charging via induction
better camera (I am assuming, but I'm pretty sure it's better, especially after the latest update)
can take photo without sound (aussie samsung has mandatory shutter noise, the bastards, no stealth selfies for you!)
        Faster processor and better graphics
        Bigger battery (200mah more)
Better battery efficiency (more talk time, more screen on time).

        con's for nexus 5:
        no expandable storage
        non removable battery.

        GSMarena comparison: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5001&idPhone2=…

The design of the nexus 5 is so god damn beautiful compared to the s3. The s3 is shiny plastic, and because it has an easy removable back actually makes the phone not feel very solid.

The standby on the nexus 5 is wonderful, there's a sense of confidence that you aren't going to unexpectedly get low battery warnings when you haven't been using it. It does a have a magnitude more battery life than the s3 (as newer technology is almost always more energy efficient), which may help prolong how much wear it can take over time.

If you upload all your music to google music, and you've usually got a wifi connection, then you should do fine without an SD card.

They're both capable phones, but nexus 5 is better in every way except those 2 things, which aren't really a big deal.

        • +1

One more Pros for N5, it has IPS Screen.
          S3 has AMOLED.

        • Nicely written, you just made me want to get a Nexus 5 right now

    • +2

Except for the usual Nexus shortcomings: fixed battery with abysmal battery life and no SD card slot. Then their recent change to update policies where even Nexus devices can only hope for 18 months of new Android versions. No point any more to buy Nexus. Google lost their way.

      • +2

No, they didnt lose their way. It was deliberate those basterds.
Their strategy is to shape new markets, and by forcing the consumer to adopt certain type of devices allows them to accomplish that.

Products like the Nexus is just that: Offer it cheap, limited in expansion, make the customer churn their device in 12 months… rinse and repeat.

        • +8

As opposed to Apples plan; offer it expensive, limited expansion, make customers churn their device every 12 months. :P

        • +1

At least apple supports software for 4+ years: The iphone 4 got ios 7.

        • +6

How's that running on ios7? Smooth?
It's a very limited version as well.

      • Its not just the updates, its the lack of Touch Wiz, Sense bloat as well.

Got bitten by the Touch Wiz bloat on the original Galaxy Tab once, never again. The amount of rooting, flashing etc, just to get a workable device is a joke.

        • +5

What a load of crap, it's cool to hate on TW with this elitest pure google crap but truth is the devices work fine with TW, it's just a bit different on the surface than stock Android. I own a pure google phone at the moment and it ain't all that at all.
I'll be honest, if there was a better alternative for me right now I'd jump ship from Android as I don't like the direction that Google are going with it at all. They seem to be conforming to the Apple ecosystem way.

      • You won't do better with updates from Samsung.

        • +2

No I won't, but if I have to install Cyanogen anyway I might as well have an exchangeable battery and an SD card slot.

That's if my next phone uses Android - there's hoping Firefox OS take off!

Neither of the commercial systems (Apple, MS or Google) have earned any brownie points in recent years.

      • +2

        abysmal battery life

The nexus 5 standby battery life is amazing.

Nexus devices can only hope for 18 months of new Android versions.

1.5 years is still the best there is. The s3 is already 1.5 years old, it's certainly not going to get any updates past kitkat. Nexus 5 will get android 5.0.

Google is still the best for android, after all, they make it.

        • +1

Edit: enough off-topic, self censoring before moderator does…

  • +9

If it supported sd cards I'd be all over the Nexus..

  • +2

Nexus 5 supports OTG so you can use it for data hungry things like movies etc. Personally I feel the need for an SD overrated though do wonder why Samsung is the only manufacturer providing the option.

    • After 4 months of owning a Nexus I really miss the SD card option. Can't wait to get my Note 3 for Xmas from the missus.

    • why Samsung is the only manufacturer providing the option.

And the largest manufacturer of all..

  • +1

Has Samsung fixed the issues with pictures comng through as movies and also an email client thar will show a notification if you've replied to the email.

  • Fail edit.

  • Still waiting for Samsung to update the Galaxy S3 i9305T to Android 4.3…

  • +2

    I rather buy nexus 5 16gb for $399

    • +2

      Good for you.

    • +2

      16GB is too small…

  • I'm torn between getting this or the nexus 5 Or the LG Optimus G Pro from Kogan !

  • Guys, I couldn't find any reference of this deal in kmart online catalogue…? Any receipt from anyone would help…

  • +1

Sure the N5 gets updates, and yes the S3 4G is still on 4.1.2 (soon to be 4.3), but what is the big deal? I'm using a S3 4G and it wants for nothing.

It's fast and smooth. I can watch tv shows on the train and I can keep my FLAC music collection on the sd card. I can also connect my portable USB DAC to amplify my audio.

Lastly with the Samsung 3000mah extended battery (no real added bulk) I can use 4G all day with about 5 hours screen time very easily. As I write this I am at 3 hours screen time with 15 hours off the charger, and still have 48% left. I don't see an N5 doing that.

Also, for anyone that actually does buy one of these phones, I highly recommend installing Allianc e ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2501393

  • Should now be available if you are near a 24 hour Kmart.

    Officeworks price beat receipt: http://imgur.com/LLhnR7a

1 left at Glen Waverley store, I think.

    • Well done. Great price for local stock and 2 year warranty.

  • Yeah not a bad deal $10 cheaper on Kogan but not worth it

    • If you read the title again you won't need to guess at all. It's an S3 4G (i9305)

lol, you edited your post as I responded to your original question. Also Kogan is $10 cheaper yes but then they charge for postage.

  • FYI: None at South Morang, Preston, Greensborough (I got their last one!) VIC. Let your fingers do the dialling, before you go to a store. Seems they didn't even have any stock, Greensborough only had the one, so, why they advertise when they don't actually have them, who knows??
Many thanks to OP, been searching for this sort of deal! :)

    • Would Officeworks check K-Mart stores for stock before giving a 5% price beat?

  • +1
    • Still says $498 on that link @ 11.57am

      • definitely $399 on my PC and mobile.
        maybe caching

        • Ok thanks. Will try clearing cache.

    • So, it would mean the 5% price beat won't work anymore then?

if you happen to find a cheaper advertised price

      http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/landing/Lowest-price-gu…

      • Why would it work when its the exact same price at Officeworks?

      • +2

Yes. Officeworks has been known to drop prices to match a competitor so they avoid the 5% price beat.

        • Competitor? They're both owned by Wesfarmers. Collusion, much?

        • Good pickup but perhaps taking it too literally. I was speaking generally as they've done it countless times for JB/DSE/Other deals so substitute 'competitor' with 'another retailer' if you must.

        • Ai… Same as Dans and Woolworths Liquor. You see them drop the price as soon as it's announced at the other.

      • Do you think OW would beat the price on a white S3? Or does this only apply to the black? Because the white is $549 for some bizarre reason…

  • None at Belmont WA

  • Any difference between Kogan phone and this phone?

    • +1

This is AU stock so you get local 2 year warranty. Kogan gets 1 year warranty handled by Kogan.

    • +1

Kogan phone won't come with an Australian adapter and you will miss out on the local Samsung 2 year warranty and Kogan might make you wait a few weeks before you get your order.

  • +1

FYI, 4.3 is now rolling out for this phone:

    http://www.sammobile.com/2013/12/12/android-4-3-jelly-bean-u…

  • This time my local Officeworks didn't have stock to be able to price match…

  • I told my Mum about this special and she raced to Kmart on the 12th to pickup the phone. They said they hadn't arrived and they call her.
She returned on the 16th, they still hadn't arrived, and they called another store (Central Coast, NSW - Erina & Bateau Bay) still no stock.
Special runs out today - does that mean she misses out?

    • Raincheck. They have to offer it for advertised specials that aren't in stock.
