Freedom Dining Table, was $1899, now $1099.

100

We were looking at this table recently and the sales staff called us once a week pushing it on us. Even yesterday they called trying to sell it to us at $1899, stating that we could get 30% off by purchasing their $100.00 loyalty card… Today it has dropped considerably in their sale. It is a quality table, now at a reasonable price.

Wow they offered you a rather generous 1.5% discount and you didn't take it! ;)

Next they'll have a Bar stool for sale, was $7988 now $3994. A massive 50% off - Wow.

    • Definitely buy now! Unless the wood in this table is pretty damn solid, I'd say for everyone to leave it.

Edit: apparently "solid mangowood" whatever that is. Site doesn't indicate weight either.

I make furniture as a hobby and are very fussy when it comes to quality. I've looked at dozens of tables at many different stores. This is a quality build.

      • Mangowood is an excellent sustainable plantation timber with a very pleasant grain. Certainly better than cutting down forests for furniture. As the name suggests, it's from the same tree that provides us with Mangoes - so double win! :D

  • Don't even include any chairs for this 'special' price

  • For a moment I thought it said free dinning table…

    free doom

  • now at a reasonable price.

You should have posted this on OzReasonable.com.au.

  • You could've mentioned that this was $10990 before and now it's 10% so everybody will jump at it. I don't think anything can be a bargain when they mark it up with a ridiculous price first and then say it's a huge discount from that price.

I was looking for a 2 toned leather sofa recently. The cheapest I could find was $2850 for the set that I am looking for. That was after bargaining and I want to buy two of them. That's made in China. The exact same set is on ebay.com for less than $1000 including free delivery anywhere in US. Only problem is that they don't ship to Australia.

    • There's a HEAP of businesses importing their own furniture (or making it) and selling online via storage sheds. They're a lot cheaper than Freedom / OzDesign / Focus on Furniture / Dare Gallery etc.. who often sell the same stuff for nearly double. In Melbourne there's several. Seriously, people paying full price are flushing money down the toilet. Even the online big boys like Matt Blatt and Milan Direct can be beaten if you spend some time looking.

You can get a table like this one any time for 1k, it's not a bargain.

      • Im in Melbourne, is there any places specifically that you could point me in the direction to? Im in the look out to buy some furniture but was going to wait for boxing day sales.
        Thanks in advance

      • Hi Marto, Can you please share some of those names of the furniture stores who import their own furnitures in Melbourne? That'll help many who read into this post.

Having said this, I love the furnitures sold by Freedom as their build quality is good. I have 3 sofas in my lounge (3 + 2.5 + 2.5) which was bought from freedom 5 years back. Two kids putting lots of stress on them. Their frame is so strong however the fabric on them are now looking bad. I got a quote for a re-fabrication from a place in Dandenong and they asked for $2700. So I am still waiting to find good deal to buy new ones as spending $2700 just to re-fabric the old set doesn't make sense if I can buy a new set paying bit more.

      • I'm in the exact same situation. A very long lived Freedom chair which has taken a beating from kidlets and could really do from a recover (it's well over 10 years old and while the material is fine, it's dated and tired). The build however, is perfect.

That being said, some of the knock off furniture they sell, seriously people - go to antique auctions and get yourself the real deal for less. Sure, it may have 40 years of use to it but in terms of investment, a Freedom chair or table is never going to hold it's value. A well made piece from whatever period you're attempting to knock off or recreate will :) (mind you, still doesn't stop me eying off a buffet from Freedom atm >.>)

who will buy this such ugly table?

    • +1

This style is fashionable… It'd work well with some nice chairs. White.

    • @ Robin888, I don't know, perhaps the same person who is pointing out your poor grammar?

While i agree that furniture is way over-priced, and that the look of the table may be undesirable to some. I think its great that the OP took the time to post this, if just to show how over-priced furniture can be.

And unless the OP is a rep, he claimed to have seen it with the pre-existing sticker price in-store so its not like they jacked up the price JUST to put it on sale. Finally he has admitted they he is at least an amatuer furniture maker, and has compared this table to dozens…and i for one would prefer to take some advice from a fellow OzBargainer than a furniture salesman.

I would like to thank the OP for the post, the table may still be overpriced but i hope the post will serve to caution others on the disgusting mark-up some furniture stores try to get away with.

OP - as a matter of reference, what are some things that attracted to you this table, and what kind of things should prospective buyers looks for in a table like this?

Thanks @jezozb. I was overseas when my wife texted me a pic and the price. I told her she was dreaming. I made a large coffee table several years ago with 28 drawers for DVD's and CD's. This cost me $1300 in timber and stain etc. this does not include the many hours it took me to construct. I can appreciate a well made piece of furniture. I also make and decorate cakes and can understand the $$ they charge for the man hours put in. This style of table suits our decor and can tell you the picture does not do it justice. We also liked it for the seamless extension function. I've been to many stores that mark up to mark down, this is not one of those situations. Freedom are expensive, it's as simple as that. This item is discontinued, that is the reason for the mark down. The best price would have been the 30% I spoke of until this mark down up until yesterday. It's a quality build and now at, what I would say, is a very reasonable price. Freedom generally only stock good quality furniture, hence the $. Feel free haters to head to Amart for a table that will be about the same price as this now and enjoy your two years of product life before it begins to wobble.

Might be a good idea to install a sushi train on such a long table, lazy susan just wont do !!

Down here in Tas the retail on this table is $1999 and it is on sale for $1199. I just have to shake my head…

    • That seems ridiculous. Transport costs?

  • So much discussion about one table.

Everyone that is having a go, my in-laws actually have this table and it's quite nice. It fits more than 9 of us sitting at it and it is a very solid table made out of nice wood.

OP can't always satisfy the tightasses, in saying that we are on OzBargain!

  • I'd rather save $800.00 than get a free pack of tampons for clicking like on Facebook! :)

The problem I find with extension tables is usually the leg placement; when you expand and slide the top to allow extra people to sit down the sides, it usually means the legs are now right where you want to sit.

  • Thanks for posting. We bought the smaller version today after shopping around for awhile and coming back to it as our favourite. When we first saw it it was on sale for $799, went back to buy and it had gone back to usual price of $999 and I wasn't prepared to pay that. Saw this post and it's dropped to $599. Picked up 6 chairs at under half price, and got an additional 5% discount with the RAA card.
